    Fresco Thermograph IC Inspection by Convective Heating Technique

    Various Thermal/Infrared Non Destructive Testing techniques are gaining interest expanding the number of applications. The non-contact nature and the increased reliability of findings make this method particularly interesting for the works of art NDE. This work is devoted to the frescoes inspection for the sizing of detached plaster areas. Air filled voids in between the coloured plaster and the supporting wall are well identified due to the increased thermal resistance. Defects are evaluated from the evolution in time of the surface temperature detected by an IR camera in transient thermal regime. The inspection of large surfaces was recently and successfully applied by means of a lateral heating [1–2]. An advantage of this procedure is the reduced inspection time. This aspect is extremely important when the thermal diffusivity of the material is low, so that a long time is needed for the thermal signal appearance.</p

    The wasted activated sludge dewaterability represents a major concern for Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) managers. Indeed, whereas the dewatered sludge could represents a re-usable matrix, the principal drawback related to the wasted sludge dewaterability is the high water content due to the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that allow the trapping of water molecules within the bio sludge flocs. In order to provide an outlook of the dewaterability features of activated sludge derived from advanced WWTP, the present research reports a long term survey (over two years) aimed at assessing the principal dewaterability parameters of the sludge wasted from different Membrane BioReactor pilot plants

In the presence of an appropriate catalyst, thiols not only add to the γ position of allenoates, overcoming their propensity to add to the β position in the absence of a catalyst, but do so with very good enantioselectivity. Sulfur nucleophiles are now added to the three families of nucleophiles (carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen) that had earlier been shown to participate in catalyzed γ additions.     E-readers and the death of the book: or, new media and the myth of the disappearing medium

    The recent emergence of e-readers and e-books has b rought the death of the book to the centre of current debates on new media. In this article, we a nalyse alternative narratives that surround the possibility of the disappearance of print books, do minated by fetishism, fears about the end of humanism, and ideas of techno-fundamentalist progre ss. We argue that, in order to comprehend such narratives, we need to inscribe them in the br oader history of media. The emergence of new media, in fact, has often been accompanied by narra tives about the possible disappearance of older media: the introduction of television, for in stance, inspired claims about the forthcoming death of film and radio. As a recurrent narrative s haping the reception of media innovation, the myth of the disappearing medium helps us to make se nse of the transformations that media change provokes in our everyday life

    Spin Glass and Antiferromagnetic Behaviour in a Diluted fcc Antiferromagnet

    We report on a Monte Carlo study of a diluted Ising antiferromagnet on a fcc lattice. This is a typical model example of a highly frustrated antiferromagnet, and we ask, whether sufficient random dilution of spins does produce a spin glass phase. Our data strongly indicate the existence of a spin glass transition for spin--concentration p<0.75p<0.75: We find a divergent spin glass susceptibility and a divergent spin glass correlation length, whereas the antiferromagnetic correlation length saturates in this regime. Furthermore, we find a first order phase transition to an antiferromagnet for 1≥p>0.851\ge p>0.85, which becomes continuous in the range 0.85>p>0.750.85>p>0.75. Finite size scaling is employed to obtain critical exponents.     Schumpeter: Theorist of the Avant-Garde

    This paper argues that Schumpeter’s 1911 edition of ‘Theory of Economic Development’ can be fruitfully read as a theory of the avant-garde, in line with such theories developed by artistic avant-garde around the same time, in particular by the Italian Futurists. In particular it will show that both Schumpeter and other avant-garde theorists sought to break with past (1), identify an avant-garde who could force that break (2), find new ways to represent the dynamic world (3), embrace the new and dynamic (4) and promote a perpetual dynamic process, instead of a specific end-state or utopia (5). This new reading helps us to understand the cultural meaning of this seminal text in economics. Secondly it greatly facilitates our understanding of the differences with the later interwar German edition and English edition, which were more cautious in their embrace of the new, less focused on the individual qualities of the entrepreneur and placed more emphasis on historical continuity. Thirdly this reading suggests a different reason for the bifurcation between Schumpeter and the rest of the Austrian school of economics. Traditionally this split is explained by Schumpeter’s affinities with the Lausanne School, this paper instead suggests that the crucial break between Schumpeter on the one hand and Böhm-Bawerk, Wieser and later members of the Austrian School on the other hand is their theory of and attitude toward social change

    New/emerging psychoactive substances and associated psychopathological consequences

Focus was here given on identification of those NPS being commented in specialised online sources and the related short-/long-term psychopathological and medical ill-health effects.MethodsNPS have been identified through an innovative crawling/navigating software, called the 'NPS.Finder®', created in order to facilitate the process of early recognition of NPS online. A range of information regarding NPS, including chemical and street names; chemical formula; three-dimensional image and anecdotally reported clinical/psychoactive effects, were here made available.ResultsUsing the 'NPS.Finder®' approach, a few thousand NPS were here preliminarily identified, a number which is about 4-fold higher than those figures suggested by European and international drug agencies. NPS most commonly associated with the onset of psychopathological consequences included here synthetic cannabinoids/cannabimimetics; new synthetic opioids; ketamine-like dissociatives; novel stimulants; novel psychedelics and several prescription and over-the-counter medicines.ConclusionsThe ever-increasing changes in terms of recreational psychotropics' availability represent a relatively new challenge for psychiatry, as the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of many NPS have not been thoroughly understood. Health/mental health professionals should be informed about the range of NPS; their intake modalities; their psychoactive sought-after effects; the idiosyncratic psychotropics' combinations and finally, their medical and psychopathological risks.Peer reviewe
