Reconstructing the impact of human activities in a NW Iberian Roman mining landscape for the last 2500 years
This article was made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Little is known about the impact of human activities during Roman times on NW Iberian mining landscapes beyond the geomorphological transformations brought about by the use of hydraulic power for gold extraction. We present the high-resolution pollen record of La Molina mire, located in an area intensely used for gold mining (Asturias, NW Spain), combined with other proxy data from the same peat core to identify different human activities, evaluate the strategies followed for the management of the resources and describe the landscape response to human disturbances. We reconstructed the timing and synchronicity of landscape changes of varying intensity and form occurred before, during and after Roman times. An open landscape was prevalent during the local Late Iron Age, a period of relatively environmental stability. During the Early Roman Empire more significant vegetation shifts took place, reflected by changes in both forest (Corylus and Quercus) and heathland cover, as mining/metallurgy peaked and grazing and cultivation increased. In the Late Roman Empire, the influence of mining/metallurgy on landscape change started to disappear. This decoupling was further consolidated in the Germanic period (i.e., Visigothic and Sueve domination of the region), with a sharp decrease in mining/metallurgy but continued grazing. Although human impact was intense in some periods, mostly during the Early Roman Empire, forest regeneration occurred afterwards: clearances were local and short-lived. However, the Roman mining landscape turned into an agrarian one at the onset of the Middle Ages, characterized by a profound deforestation at a regional level due to a myriad of human activities that resulted in an irreversible openness of the landscape. © 2014 The Authors
Environmental impact of early palaeometallurgy: pollen and geochemical analysis
International audienceInterdisciplinary research was carried out in mid-level mountain areas in France with the aim of documenting historical mining and smelting activities by means of pollen and geochemical analyses. These investigations were made on cores collected in French peatlands in the Morvan (northern Massif Central), at Mont Lozère (southern Massif Central) and in the Basque Country (Pyrénées). Different periods of mining were recognised from Prehistory to modern times through the presence of anthropogenic lead in peat. Some of these were already known from archaeological dates or historical archives, especially for mediaeval and modern periods. However prehistoric ancient mining activities, as early as the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1700 b.c.), were also discovered. They had all led to modifications in plant cover, probably related in part to forest clearance necessary to supply energy for mining and smelting
First report of eprinomectin-resistant isolates of Haemonchus contortus in 5 dairy sheep farms from the Pyrénées Atlantiques département in France
Infection of sheep by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in pastoral systems such as those found in the South Western area of France, the Pyrénées Atlantiques, is one of the main reasons for economic loss and degradation of their welfare. In the present study, the efficacy of eprinomectin (EPN) was monitored on farms from this area following suspicion of lack of anthelmintic efficacy. Suspicions were raised by veterinarians, based on clinical signs ranging from milk and body condition loss, to anaemia, and mortality. Resistance was evaluated according to the World Association for the Advancement for Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) guidelines using fecal egg count reduction tests reinforced by individual analysis of drug concentration in the serum of all treated ewes by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). EPN was administered by subcutaneous (SC) and topical (T) route according to manufacturer's requirements, as well as by the oral route (O) with the topical solution according to off-labelled practices in the field. For the first time in France, the presence of resistant isolates of Haemonchus contortus to EPN was observed in 5 dairy sheep farms. The HPLC dosages showed exposure of worms to concentrations compatible with anthelmintic activity for animals treated by the SC and O routes. By contrast, they showed under exposure to the drug of most individuals treated by the T route. EPN is the only null milk withdrawal anthelmintic molecule currently available. The presence of resistant isolates of the pathogenic H. contortus to EPN in this important dairy region requires an urgent change in grazing, and sometimes production, systems
Testing the Effect of Relative Pollen Productivity on the REVEALS Model : A Validated Reconstruction of Europe-Wide Holocene Vegetation
Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the 'Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites' (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity

Histone deacetylase-1 and -2 expression in mobile tongue squamous cell carcinoma: Associations with clinicopathological parameters and patients survival
Background: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) have been associated with tumor development and progression in several types of human malignancy and HDAC inhibitors are currently being explored as anti-cancer agents in clinical trials. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical significance of HDAC-1 and -2 protein expression in mobile tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods: HDAC-1 and -2 protein expression was assessed immunohistochemically on 49 mobile tongue SCC tissue samples and was analyzed in relation with clinicopathological characteristics, overall and disease-free patients' survival. Results: HDAC-1 overexpression was significantly associated with younger patients' age (P=0.0381) and male gender (P=0.0345), poor histopathological grade of differentiation (P=0.0236) and the presence of lymph node metastases (P=0.0104). Intense HDAC-1 staining intensity was significantly associated with male gender (P=0.0127), increased stromal infiltration reaction (P=0.0125) and well-defined shape of tumor invasion (P=0.0396). HDAC-2 overexpression did not show significant correlations with any clinicopathological parameters, whereas intense HDAC-2 staining intensity was significantly associated with the presence of muscular invasion (P=0.0466) and advanced depth of invasion (P=0.0251). Mobile tongue SCC patients with HDAC-1 overexpression presented shorter overall and disease-free survival compared to those with no evidence of HDAC-1 overexpression (log-rank test, P=0.0651 and 0.0247, respectively). Conclusions: The present study supported evidence that HDACs may participate in the formation and progression of mobile tongue SCC, reinforcing their possible use as biomarkers as also the therapeutic utility of HDAC inhibitors in mobile tongue SCC chemoprevention and treatment. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S
RCAS1 expression in mobile tongue squamous cell carcinoma: An immunohistochemical study
Background: The receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells (RCAS1) is a human tumor-associated antigen that has been considered to play a crucial role in tumor progression by enabling cancer cells to evade immune surveillance. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of RCAS1 expression in mobile tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Material/Methods: RCAS1 protein expression was assessed immunohistochemically on 49 mobile tongue SCC tissue samples obtained from an equal number of patients and was statistically analyzed with clinicopathological characteristics and overall and disease-free patients' survival. Results: Enhanced RCAS1 expression was significantly associated with reduced depth of invasion (p=0.0069), low mitotic index (p=0.0251) and no evidence of muscular invasion (p=0.0098). A borderline association between RCAS1 expression and stromal inflammatory reaction was also noted (p=0.0660). RCAS1 expression was not associated with overall and disease-free survival. Conclusions: Our data support evidence for possible implication of RCAS1 at the early stage of tumor progression in mobile tongue SCC, whereas the survival prediction using RCAS1 expression as a clinical marker seems uncertain for this type of malignancy. © Med Sci Monit
