Testing and design procedure for corner connections of masonry heritage buildings strengthened by metallic grouted anchors
Structural connections are crucial in determining the seismic behaviour of buildings; their importance is indeed acknowledged by current design codes, both in the case of new built and of heritage structures. Eurocode 8 in particular encourages the strengthening of connections of existing structures so as to ensure global response; yet, at the state of the art, clear prescriptions regarding the assessment of connections of heritage buildings and the design of appropriate strengthening systems are missing. Even the scientific literature seldom deals with the issue of connections, both in the unreinforced and strengthened set-up. As such, designers are left with the issue of experimentally characterise the capacity of connections, and of sourcing data and choosing suitable design procedures in order to comply with the requirements prescribed for retrofit interventions on historic buildings. In the attempt of tackling the lack of quantitative data, as well as of providing template for the experimental assessment and design of strengthening systems for connections, the authors carried out two sets of laboratory tests on masonry samples strengthened by metallic grouted anchors. Parameters significant to the performance of the connection are identified through experimental results and a design procedure is developed. The paper analyses in detail the response of a widely-applied strengthening technique, but also provides general guidance for dealing with the repair and strengthening of connections of heritage buildings
Mining discharge letters for diagnoses validation and quality assessment
We present two projects where text mining techniques are applied to free text documents written by clinicians. In the first, text mining is applied to discharge letters related to patients with diag-noses of acute myocardial infarction (by ICD9CM coding). The aim is extracting information on diagnoses to validate them and to integrate administrative databases. In the second, text mining is applied to discharge letters related to patients that received a diagnosis of heart failure (by ICD9CM coding). The aim is assessing the presence of follow-up instructions of doctors to patients, as an aspect of information continuity and of the continuity and quality of care. Results show that text mining is a promising tool both for diagnoses validation and quality of care as-sessment
Prolonged decrease in heart rate variability after elective hip arthroplasty
The pattern of postoperative heart rate variability may provide insight into the response of the autonomic nervous system to anaesthesia and surgery. We have obtained spectral (fast Fourier transform) and non-spectral indices of heart rate variability from electrocardiographic recordings, sampled during continuous perioperative Holter monitoring in 15 otherwise healthy patients with an uncomplicated postoperative course, undergoing elective hip arthroplasty with either spinal or general anaesthesia. In both groups, total spectral energy (0.01-1 Hz), low-frequency spectral energy (0.01-0.15 Hz) and high-frequency spectral energy (0.15-0.40 Hz) decreased after surgery to 32% (95% confidence interval (Cl) 10.5; P <0.01), 29% (95% Cl 12.5; P <0.07; and 33% (95% Cl 12.5; P <0.01) of their preoperative values, respectively, and these indices remained suppressed for up to 5 days. Non-spectral indices decreased to a similar extent. These findings indicate a substantial and prolonged postoperative decrease in both parasympathetic and sympathetic influence on the sinus nod
PLXNA1 and PLXNA3 cooperate to pattern the nasal axons that guide gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons regulate puberty onset and sexual reproduction by secreting GnRH to activate and maintain the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. During embryonic development, GnRH neurons migrate along olfactory and vomeronasal axons through the nose into the brain, where they project to the median eminence to release GnRH. The secreted glycoprotein SEMA3A binds its receptors neuropilin (NRP) 1 or NRP2 to position these axons for correct GnRH neuron migration, with an additional role for the NRP co-receptor PLXNA1. Accordingly, mutations in SEMA3A, NRP1, NRP2 and PLXNA1 have been linked to defective GnRH neuron development in mice and inherited GnRH deficiency in humans. Here, we show that only the combined loss of PLXNA1 and PLXNA3 phenocopied the full spectrum of nasal axon and GnRH neuron defects of SEMA3A knockout mice. Together with Plxna1, the human orthologue of Plxna3 should therefore be investigated as a candidate gene for inherited GnRH deficiency

Performance Of A Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber Exposed To The WANF Neutrino Beam
We present the results of the first exposure of a Liquid Argon TPC to a
multi-GeV neutrino beam. The data have been collected with a 50 liters
ICARUS-like chamber located between the CHORUS and NOMAD experiments at the
CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF). We discuss both the instrumental
performance of the detector and its capability to identify and reconstruct low
multiplicity neutrino interactions.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Submitted for publication to Physical Review
Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Given the severity of their illness and lack of effective disease modifying agents, it is not surprising that most patients with ALS consider trying complementary and alternative therapies. Some of the most commonly considered alternative therapies include special diets, nutritional supplements, cannabis, acupuncture, chelation and energy healing. This chapter reviews these in detail. We also describe 3 models by which physicians may frame discussions about alternative therapies: paternalism, autonomy and shared decision making. Finally, we review a program called ALSUntangled which using shared shared decision making to review alternative therapies for ALS
Large-angle production of charged pions by 3 GeV/c - 12 GeV/c protons on carbon, copper and tin targets
A measurement of the double-differential production cross-section
in proton--carbon, proton--copper and proton--tin collisions in the range of
pion momentum 100 \MeVc \leq p < 800 \MeVc and angle 0.35 \rad \le \theta
<2.15 \rad is presented. The data were taken with the HARP detector in the T9
beam line of the CERN PS. The pions were produced by proton beams in a momentum
range from 3 \GeVc to 12 \GeVc hitting a target with a thickness of 5% of a
nuclear interaction length. The tracking and identification of the produced
particles was done using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber
(TPC) placed in a solenoidal magnet. An elaborate system of detectors in the
beam line ensured the identification of the incident particles. Results are
shown for the double-differential cross-sections at four incident proton beam
momenta (3 \GeVc, 5 \GeVc, 8 \GeVc and 12 \GeVc)
