Velocity field distributions due to ideal line vortices
We evaluate numerically the velocity field distributions produced by a
bounded, two-dimensional fluid model consisting of a collection of parallel
ideal line vortices. We sample at many spatial points inside a rigid circular
boundary. We focus on ``nearest neighbor'' contributions that result from
vortices that fall (randomly) very close to the spatial points where the
velocity is being sampled. We confirm that these events lead to a non-Gaussian
high-velocity ``tail'' on an otherwise Gaussian distribution function for the
Eulerian velocity field. We also investigate the behavior of distributions that
do not have equilibrium mean-field probability distributions that are uniform
inside the circle, but instead correspond to both higher and lower mean-field
energies than those associated with the uniform vorticity distribution. We find

Probing the Sensitivity of Electron Wave Interference to Disorder-Induced Scattering in Solid-State Devices
The study of electron motion in semiconductor billiards has elucidated our
understanding of quantum interference and quantum chaos. The central assumption
is that ionized donors generate only minor perturbations to the electron
trajectories, which are determined by scattering from billiard walls. We use
magnetoconductance fluctuations as a probe of the quantum interference and show
that these fluctuations change radically when the scattering landscape is
modified by thermally-induced charge displacement between donor sites. Our
results challenge the accepted understanding of quantum interference effects in

Terrorism and social media: global evidence
The study assesses the relationship between terrorism and social media from a cross section of 148 countries with data for the year 2012. The empirical evidence is based on Ordinary Least Squares, Negative Binomial and Quantile regressions. The main finding is that there is a positive relationship between social media in terms of Facebook penetration and terrorism. The positive relationship is driven by below-median quantiles of terrorism. In other words, countries in which existing levels of terrorism are low are more significantly associated with a positive Facebook-terrorism nexus. The established positive relationship is confirmed from other externalities of terrorism: terrorism fatalities, terrorism incidents, terrorism injuries and terrorism-related property damages. The terrorism externalities are constituents of the composite dependent variable
The role of tool geometry in process damped milling
The complex interaction between machining structural systems and the cutting process results in machining instability, so called chatter. In some milling scenarios, process damping is a useful phenomenon that can be exploited to mitigate chatter and hence improve productivity. In the present study, experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of process damped milling considering different tool geometries (edge radius, rake and relief angles and variable helix/pitch). The results clearly indicate that variable helix/pitch angles most significantly increase process damping performance. Additionally, increased cutting edge radius moderately improves process damping performance, while rake and relief angles have a smaller and closely coupled effect
Effects of ecstasy/polydrug use on memory for associative information
Rationale
Associative learning underpins behaviours that are fundamental to the everyday functioning of the individual. Evidence pointing to learning deficits in recreational drug users merits further examination.
Objectives
A word pair learning task was administered to examine associative learning processes in ecstasy/polydrug users.
Methods
After assignment to either single or divided attention conditions, 44 ecstasy/polydrug users and 48 non-users were presented with 80 word pairs at encoding. Following this, four types of stimuli were presented at the recognition phase: the words as originally paired (old pairs), previously presented words in different pairings (conjunction pairs), old words paired with new words, and pairs of new words (not presented previously). The task was to identify which of the stimuli were intact old pairs.
Results
Ecstasy/ploydrug users produced significantly more false-positive responses overall compared to non-users. Increased long-term frequency of ecstasy use was positively associated with the propensity to produce false-positive responses. It was also associated with a more liberal signal detection theory decision criterion value. Measures of long term and recent cannabis use were also associated with these same word pair learning outcome measures. Conjunction word pairs, irrespective of drug use, generated the highest level of false-positive responses and significantly more false-positive responses were made in the divided attention condition compared to the single attention condition.
Conclusions
Overall, the results suggest that long-term ecstasy exposure may induce a deficit in associative learning and this may be in part a consequence of users adopting a more liberal decision criterion value
An Automated Method for the Detection and Extraction of HI Self-Absorption in High-Resolution 21cm Line Surveys
We describe algorithms that detect 21cm line HI self-absorption (HISA) in
large data sets and extract it for analysis. Our search method identifies HISA
as spatially and spectrally confined dark HI features that appear as negative
residuals after removing larger-scale emission components with a modified CLEAN
algorithm. Adjacent HISA volume-pixels (voxels) are grouped into features in
(l,b,v) space, and the HI brightness of voxels outside the 3-D feature
boundaries is smoothly interpolated to estimate the absorption amplitude and
the unabsorbed HI emission brightness. The reliability and completeness of our
HISA detection scheme have been tested extensively with model data. We detect
most features over a wide range of sizes, linewidths, amplitudes, and
background levels, with poor detection only where the absorption brightness
temperature amplitude is weak, the absorption scale approaches that of the
correlated noise, or the background level is too faint for HISA to be
distinguished reliably from emission gaps. False detection rates are very low
in all parts of the parameter space except at sizes and amplitudes approaching
those of noise fluctuations. Absorption measurement biases introduced by the
method are generally small and appear to arise from cases of incomplete HISA
detection. This paper is the third in a series examining HISA at high angular
resolution. A companion paper (Paper II) uses our HISA search and extraction
method to investigate the cold atomic gas distribution in the Canadian Galactic

Experimental evidence of strong phonon scattering in isotopical disordered systems: The case of LiH_xD_{1-x} crystals
The observation of the local - mode vibration, the two - mode behavior of the
LO phonons at large isotope concentration, as well as large line broadening in
LIH - D mixed crystals directly evidence strong additional phonon scattering

Elliptic curves of large rank and small conductor
For r=6,7,...,11 we find an elliptic curve E/Q of rank at least r and the
smallest conductor known, improving on the previous records by factors ranging
from 1.0136 (for r=6) to over 100 (for r=10 and r=11). We describe our search
methods, and tabulate, for each r=5,6,...,11, the five curves of lowest
conductor, and (except for r=11) also the five of lowest absolute discriminant,

A Model of Turbulence in Magnetized Plasmas: Implications for the Dissipation Range in the Solar Wind
This paper studies the turbulent cascade of magnetic energy in weakly
collisional magnetized plasmas. A cascade model is presented, based on the
assumptions of local nonlinear energy transfer in wavenumber space, critical
balance between linear propagation and nonlinear interaction times, and the
applicability of linear dissipation rates for the nonlinearly turbulent plasma.
The model follows the nonlinear cascade of energy from the driving scale in the
MHD regime, through the transition at the ion Larmor radius into the kinetic
Alfven wave regime, in which the turbulence is dissipated by kinetic processes.
The turbulent fluctuations remain at frequencies below the ion cyclotron
frequency due to the strong anisotropy of the turbulent fluctuations,
k_parallel << k_perp (implied by critical balance). In this limit, the
turbulence is optimally described by gyrokinetics; it is shown that the
gyrokinetic approximation is well satisfied for typical slow solar wind
parameters. Wave phase velocity measurements are consistent with a kinetic
Alfven wave cascade and not the onset of ion cyclotron damping. The conditions
under which the gyrokinetic cascade reaches the ion cyclotron frequency are
established. Cascade model solutions imply that collisionless damping provides
a natural explanation for the observed range of spectral indices in the
dissipation range of the solar wind. The dissipation range spectrum is
predicted to be an exponential fall off; the power-law behavior apparent in
observations may be an artifact of limited instrumental sensitivity. The
cascade model is motivated by a programme of gyrokinetic simulations of
turbulence and particle heating in the solar wind.Comment: 29 pages, 14 figure
Physical activity as a treatment for depression: the TREAD randomised trial protocol
Published version. Copyright © 2010 BioMed CentralBackground: Depression is one of the most common reasons for consulting a General Practitioner (GP) within the UK. Whilst antidepressants have been shown to be clinically effective, many patients and healthcare professionals would like to access other forms of treatment as an alternative or adjunct to drug therapy for depression. A recent systematic review presented some evidence that physical activity could offer one such option, although further investigation is needed to test its effectiveness within the context of the National Health Service. The aim of this paper is to describe the protocol for a randomised, controlled trial (RCT) designed to evaluate an intervention developed to increase physical activity as a treatment for depression within primary care. Methods/design: The TREAD study is a pragmatic, multi-centre, two-arm RCT which targets patients presenting with a new episode of depression. Patients were approached if they were aged 18-69, had recently consulted their GP for depression and, where appropriate, had been taking antidepressants for less than one month. Only those patients with a confirmed diagnosis of a depressive episode as assessed by the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R), a Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score of at least 14 and informed written consent were included in the study. Eligible patients were individually randomised to one of two treatment groups; usual GP care or usual GP care plus facilitated physical activity. The primary outcome of the trial is clinical symptoms of depression assessed using the BDI four months after randomisation. A number of secondary outcomes are also measured at the 4-, 8- and 12-month follow-up points including quality of life, attitude to and involvement in physical activity and antidepressant use/adherence. Outcomes will be analysed on an intention-to-treat (ITT) basis and will use linear and logistic regression models to compare treatments. Discussion: The results of the trial will provide information about the effectiveness of physical activity as a treatment for depression. Given the current prevalence of depression and its associated economic burden, it is hoped that TREAD will provide a timely contribution to the evidence on treatment options for patients, clinicians and policy-makers
