Predicting the Route of Delivery in Women with Low-Lying Placenta Using Transvaginal Ultrasonography: Significance of Placental Migration and Marginal Sinus
Background/Aims: To examine the significance of placental migration and the presence of a placental marginal sinus to predict the eventual route of delivery in low-lying placenta. Methods: 49 women with a low-lying placenta after 30 weeks' gestation were studied. The distance between the internal os and leading edge of the placenta was measured weekly using transvaginal ultrasonography until 37 weeks' gestation. The relationship between the rate of placental migration, the presence of a placental marginal sinus and the eventual mode of delivery was investigated. Results: Although the cesarean section rate was 56.3% (9/16) in the 'slow' migration (0-2.0 mm/week) group, no patient (0/33) in the 'fast' (>2.0 mm/week) migration group underwent a cesarean section (p<0.01). The cesarean section rate was 71.4% (5/7) in patients with a placental marginal sinus, significantly greater than the rate of 9.5% (4/42) in patients without a marginal sinus (p<0.01). Conclusion:A decreased rate of placental migration until 37 weeks' gestation and the presence of a placental marginal sinus were associated with subsequent cesarean delivery because of antepartum vaginal bleeding. Efficient implementation of a CCA2-secure variant of McEliece using generalized Srivastava codes
International audienceIn this paper we present efficient implementations of McEliece variants using quasi-dyadic codes. We provide secure parameters for a classical McEliece encryption scheme based on quasi-dyadic generalized Srivastava codes, and successively convert our scheme to a CCA2-secure protocol in the random oracle model applying the Fujisaki-Okamoto transform. In contrast with all other CCA2-secure code-based cryptosystems that work in the random oracle model, our conversion does not require a constant weight encoding function. We present results for both 128-bit and 80-bit security level, and for the latter we also feature an implementation for an embedded device
Software Defined Networking Opportunities for Intelligent Security Enhancement of Industrial Control Systems
In the last years, cyber security of Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) has become an important issue due to the discovery of sophisticated malware that by attacking Critical Infrastructures, could cause catastrophic safety results. Researches have been developing countermeasures to enhance cyber security for pre-Internet era systems, which are extremely vulnerable to threats. This paper presents the potential opportunities that Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides for the security enhancement of Industrial Control Networks. SDN permits a high level of configuration of a network by the separation of control and data planes. Fish Spawning Aggregations: Where Well-Placed Management Actions Can Yield Big Benefits for Fisheries and Conservation
Marine ecosystem management has traditionally been divided between fisheries management and biodiversity conservation approaches, and the merging of these disparate agendas has proven difficult. Here, we offer a pathway that can unite fishers, scientists, resource managers and conservationists towards a single vision for some areas of the ocean where small investments in management can offer disproportionately large benefits to fisheries and biodiversity conservation. Specifically, we provide a series of evidenced-based arguments that support an urgent need to recognize fish spawning aggregations (FSAs) as a focal point for fisheries management and conservation on a global scale, with a particular emphasis placed on the protection of multispecies FSA sites. We illustrate that these sites serve as productivity hotspots - small areas of the ocean that are dictated by the interactions between physical forces and geomorphology, attract multiple species to reproduce in large numbers and support food web dynamics, ecosystem health and robust fisheries. FSAs are comparable in vulnerability, importance and magnificence to breeding aggregations of seabirds, sea turtles and whales yet they receive insufficient attention and are declining worldwide. Numerous case-studies confirm that protected aggregations do recover to benefit fisheries through increases in fish biomass, catch rates and larval recruitment at fished sites. The small size and spatio-temporal predictability of FSAs allow monitoring, assessment and enforcement to be scaled down while benefits of protection scale up to entire populations. Fishers intuitively understand the linkages between protecting FSAs and healthy fisheries and thus tend to support their protection
Validation of a Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism-Based Non-Invasive Prenatal Test in Twin Gestations : Determination of Zygosity, Individual Fetal Sex, and Fetal Aneuploidy
We analyzed maternal plasma cell-free DNA samples from twin pregnancies in a prospective blinded study to validate a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) for zygosity, fetal sex, and aneuploidy. Zygosity was evaluated by looking for either one or two fetal genome complements, fetal sex was evaluated by evaluating Y-chromosome loci, and aneuploidy was assessed through SNP ratios. Zygosity was correctly predicted in 100% of cases (93/93; 95% confidence interval (CI) 96.1%-100%). Individual fetal sex for both twins was also called with 100% accuracy (102/102; 95% weighted CI 95.2%-100%). All cases with copy number truth were also correctly identified. The dizygotic aneuploidy sensitivity was 100% (10/10; 95% CI 69.2%-100%), and overall specificity was 100% (96/96; 95% weighted CI, 94.8%-100%). The mean fetal fraction (FF) of monozygotic twins (n = 43) was 13.0% (standard deviation (SD), 4.5%); for dizygotic twins (n = 79), the mean lower FF was 6.5% (SD, 3.1%) and the mean higher FF was 8.1% (SD, 3.5%). We conclude SNP-based NIPT for zygosity is of value when chorionicity is uncertain or anomalies are identified. Zygosity, fetal sex, and aneuploidy are complementary evaluations that can be carried out on the same specimen as early as 9 weeks' gestation
MOA-2011-BLG-293Lb: A test of pure survey microlensing planet detections
Because of the development of large-format, wide-field cameras, microlensing
surveys are now able to monitor millions of stars with sufficient cadence to
detect planets. These new discoveries will span the full range of significance
levels including planetary signals too small to be distinguished from the
noise. At present, we do not understand where the threshold is for detecting
planets. MOA-2011-BLG-293Lb is the first planet to be published from the new
surveys, and it also has substantial followup observations. This planet is
robustly detected in survey+followup data (Delta chi^2 ~ 5400). The planet/host
mass ratio is q=5.3+/- 0.2*10^{-3}. The best fit projected separation is
s=0.548+/- 0.005 Einstein radii. However, due to the s-->s^{-1} degeneracy,
projected separations of s^{-1} are only marginally disfavored at Delta
chi^2=3. A Bayesian estimate of the host mass gives M_L = 0.43^{+0.27}_{-0.17}
M_Sun, with a sharp upper limit of M_L < 1.2 M_Sun from upper limits on the
lens flux. Hence, the planet mass is m_p=2.4^{+1.5}_{-0.9} M_Jup, and the
physical projected separation is either r_perp = ~1.0 AU or r_perp = ~3.4 AU.
We show that survey data alone predict this solution and are able to
characterize the planet, but the Delta chi^2 is much smaller (Delta chi^2~500)
than with the followup data. The Delta chi^2 for the survey data alone is
smaller than for any other securely detected planet. This event suggests a
means to probe the detection threshold, by analyzing a large sample of events
like MOA-2011-BLG-293, which have both followup data and high cadence survey
data, to provide a guide for the interpretation of pure survey microlensing

MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb: constraining the mass of a microlensing planet from microlensing parallax, orbital motion and detection of blended light
Microlensing detections of cool planets are important for the construction of
an unbiased sample to estimate the frequency of planets beyond the snow line,
which is where giant planets are thought to form according to the core
accretion theory of planet formation. In this paper, we report the discovery of
a giant planet detected from the analysis of the light curve of a
high-magnification microlensing event MOA-2010-BLG-477. The measured
planet-star mass ratio is and the projected
separation is in units of the Einstein radius. The angular
Einstein radius is unusually large mas. Combining
this measurement with constraints on the "microlens parallax" and the lens
flux, we can only limit the host mass to the range . In
this particular case, the strong degeneracy between microlensing parallax and
planet orbital motion prevents us from measuring more accurate host and planet
masses. However, we find that adding Bayesian priors from two effects (Galactic
model and Keplerian orbit) each independently favors the upper end of this mass
range, yielding star and planet masses of
and at a distance of kpc,
and with a semi-major axis of AU. Finally, we show that the
lens mass can be determined from future high-resolution near-IR adaptive optics

Microlensing binaries with candidate brown dwarf companions
Brown dwarfs are important objects because they may provide a missing link between stars and planets, two populations that have dramatically different formation histories. In this paper, we present the candidate binaries with brown dwarf companions that are found by analyzing binary microlensing events discovered during the 2004-2011 observation seasons. Based on the low mass ratio criterion of q \u3c 0.2, we found seven candidate events: OGLE-2004-BLG-035, OGLE-2004-BLG-039, OGLE-2007-BLG-006, OGLE-2007-BLG-399/MOA-2007-BLG-334, MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172, MOA-2011-BLG-149, and MOA-201-BLG-278/OGLE- 2011-BLG-012N. Among them, we are able to confirm that the companions of the lenses of MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149 are brown dwarfs by determining the mass of the lens based on the simultaneous measurement of the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured masses of the brown dwarf companions are 0.02 ± 0.01 M and 0.019 ± 0.002 M for MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149, respectively, and both companions are orbiting low-mass M dwarf host stars. More microlensing brown dwarfs are expected to be detected as the number of lensing events with well-covered light curves increases with new-generation searches. © 2012.
