    Implication of breast cancer phenotype for patients with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis

    Abstract Background We aimed to study the implications of breast cancer (BC) subtypes for the development and prognosis of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC). Patients and methods Data from the breast cancer patients diagnosed with LC between 2005 and 2010 were retrieved. Patients were classified in luminal A, B, HER2 positive and triple negative (TN) and their BC diagnosis, treatment, and outcome were analyzed according to each subtype. Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact test were used for categorical variables. Survival analyses were performed by Kaplan–Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Results A total of 38 BC patients were identified, with a median age of 54.8 years (range 36–79). The proportion of luminal A, B, HER2 positive and TN was 18.4%, 31.6%, 26.3% and 23.7%, respectively. LC was the first evidence of metastatic disease in 5 BC patients. Twenty patients received the systemic chemotherapy, with 16 (80%) whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Nine patients received only WBRT. TN patients had the shorter interval between metastatic breast cancer diagnosis and the development of LC. Median survival after the diagnosis of LC (OSLC) was 2.6 months (range 1.2–6.4), and did not differ across breast cancer subtypes. In univariate analysis, performance status (ECOG = 0–2) and chemotherapy were prognostic for OSLC, but only the treatment stood as an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis. Conclusions Breast cancer subtype influences the timing of LC appearance, but not OSLC. Patients with LC from breast cancer should be offered systemic treatment, as it appears to associate with the improved outcome. New therapeutic strategy, including, targeted and intrathecal therapy are deserved for BC patients with LC

    Investigation on the structural changes of ZnO:Er:Yb thin film during laser annealing to fabricate a transparent conducting upconverter

    A transparent and conducting ZnO:Er:Yb thin film with upconversion properties has been achieved after being annealed with continuous laser radiation just before the ablation point of the material. This work demonstrates that the laser energy preserves the conductivity of the film and at the same time creates an adequate surrounding for Er and Yb to produce visible upconversion at 660, 560, 520, and 480 nm under 980 nm laser excitation. The relation between the structural, electrical and upconversion properties is discussed. It is observed that the laser energy melts part of the material, which recrystallizes creating rare earth oxides and two different wurtzite structures, one with substitutional rare earths and oxygen vacancies (responsible for the conductivity) and the other without substitutional rare earth ions (responsible for the upconversion emission)

    The importance of back contact modification in Cu2ZnSnSe4 solar cells: The role of a thin MoO2 layer

    Cu2ZnSn(SxSe1−x)4 (CZTSSe) photovoltaic absorbers could be the earth-abundant and low toxicity replacement for the already commercialized CuIn1−xGaxSe2 (CIGS) thin film technology. In order to make this possible, specific research efforts applied to the bulk, front and back interfaces must be performed with the aim of improving CZTSSe performance. In this paper the importance of back contact modification to obtain high efficiency Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) solar cells and to increase a paramount and limiting parameter such as VOC is highlighted. Several Mo configurations (monolayer, bi-layer and tri-layer) with different electrical and morphological properties are investigated in CZTSe solar cells. An optimum tri-layer configuration in order to minimize overselenization of the back contact during thermal annealing while keeping reasonable electrical features is defined. Additionally, a thin intermediate MoO2 layer that results in a very effective barrier against selenization and innovative way to efficiently assist in the CZTSe absorber sintering is introduced. The use of this layer enhances grain growth and subsequently the efficiency of solar cells increases via major VOC and FF improvement. An efficiency increase from 7.2% to 9.5% is obtained using a Mo tri-layer with a 20nm intermediate MoO2 layer

    CNS-border associated macrophages respond to acute ischemic stroke attracting granulocytes and promoting vascular leakage

    The central nervous system (CNS) contains several types of immune cells located in specific anatomic compartments. Macrophages reside at the CNS borders surrounding the brain vessels, in leptomeningeal spaces and the choroid plexus, where they interact with the vasculature and play immunological surveillance and scavenging functions. We investigated the phenotypic changes and role of these macrophages in response to acute ischemic stroke. Given that CD163 expression is a hallmark of perivascular and meningeal macrophages in the rat and human brain, we isolated CD163+ brain macrophages by fluorescence activated cell sorting. We obtained CD163+ cells from control rats and 16 h following transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, after verifying that infiltration of CD163+ peripheral myeloid cells is negligible at this acute time point. Transcriptome analysis of the sorted CD163+ cells identified ischemia-induced upregulation of the hypoxia inducible factor-1 pathway and induction of genes encoding for extracellular matrix components and leukocyte chemoattractants, amongst others. Using a cell depletion strategy, we found that CNS border-associated macrophages participate in granulocyte recruitment, promote the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), increase the permeability of pial and cortical blood vessels, and contribute to neurological dysfunction in the acute phase of ischemia/reperfusion. We detected VEGF expression surrounding blood vessels and in some CD163+ perivascular macrophages in the brain tissue of ischemic stroke patients deceased one day after stroke onset. These findings show ischemia-induced reprogramming of the gene expression profile of CD163+ macrophages that has a rapid impact on leukocyte chemotaxis and blood-brain barrier integrity, and promotes neurological impairment in the acute phase of stroke

    Earliest evidence of pollution by heavy metals in archaeological sites

    Homo species were exposed to a new biogeochemical environment when they began to occupy caves. Here we report the first evidence of palaeopollution through geochemical analyses of heavy metals in four renowned archaeological caves of the Iberian Peninsula spanning the last million years of human evolution. Heavy metal contents reached high values due to natural (guano deposition) and anthropogenic factors (e.g. combustion) in restricted cave environments. The earliest anthropogenic pollution evidence is related to Neanderthal hearths from Gorham's Cave (Gibraltar), being one of the first milestones in the so-called “Anthropocene”. According to its heavy metal concentration, these sediments meet the present-day standards of “contaminated soil”. Together with the former, the Gibraltar Vanguard Cave, shows Zn and Cu pollution ubiquitous across highly anthropic levels pointing to these elements as potential proxies for human activities. Pb concentrations in Magdalenian and Bronze age levels at El Pirulejo site can be similarly interpreted. Despite these high pollution levels, the contaminated soils might not have posed a major threat to Homo populations. Altogether, the data presented here indicate a long-term exposure of Homo to these elements, via fires, fumes and their ashes, which could have played certain role in environmental-pollution tolerance, a hitherto neglected influence.Francisco J.     Revelando la geometría en profundidad de las fallas activas que limitan el valle del Guadalentín mediante sísmica de reflexión de alta resolución: resultados preliminares

    [EN]: To produce seismic hazard assessments to the current state-of-the-art, it is essential to characterize the active faults in terms of geometry, interrelation and seismotectonic status. The Guadalentin Depression is the main basin within the Eastern Betic Shear Zone, which corresponds to a NE-SW tectonic corridor bounded by the Carrascoy, Alhama de Murcia and Palomares faults, from north to south. Although a number of active tectonics and paleoseismological studies have been carried out in these faults, almost nothing is known about their geometry at depth. To unveil the deep structure, geometry and upper Neogene deformation history of these faults we have carried out a high-resolution seismic reflection survey. The acquired seismic profiles will allow to improve our understanding of the deep geometry of the known active faults (up to 2 km depth), as well as to identify potential buried branches and will help to reduce the uncertainties in seismic hazard assessment.[ES]: Para producir evaluaciones del peligro sísmico actualizadas al estado del arte actual, es esencial caracterizar las fallas activas de una región en términos de geometría, interrelación y estado sismotectónico. La depresión del Guadalentín es la principal cuenca cuaternaria dentro de la Zona de Cizalla de las Béticas Orientales, la cual corresponde a un corredor tectónico con dirección NE-SW delimitado por las fallas de Carrascoy, Alhama de Murcia y Palomares, de norte a sur. Aunque varios estudios de tectónica activa y paleosismología se han centrado en estas fallas, su geometría en profundidad es bastante incierta.     Age and date for early arrival of the Acheulian in Europe (Barranc de la Boella, la Canonja, Spain)

    The first arrivals of hominin populations into Eurasia during the Early Pleistocene are currently considered to have occurred as short and poorly dated biological dispersions. Questions as to the tempo and mode of these early prehistoric settlements have given rise to debates concerning the taxonomic significance of the lithic assemblages, as trace fossils, and the geographical distribution of the technological traditions found in the Lower Palaeolithic record. Here, we report on the Barranc de la Boella site which has yielded a lithic assemblage dating to ,1 million years ago that includes large cutting tools (LCT). We argue that distinct technological traditions coexisted in the Iberian archaeological repertoires of the late Early Pleistocene age in a similar way to the earliest sub-Saharan African artefact assemblages. These differences between stone tool assemblages may be attributed to the different chronologies of hominin dispersal events. The archaeological record of Barranc de la Boella completes the geographical distribution of LCT assemblages across southern Eurasia during the EMPT (Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition, circa 942 to 641 kyr). Up to now, chronology of the earliest European LCT assemblages is based on the abundant Palaeolithic record found in terrace river sequences which have been dated to the end of the EMPT and later.     El presente proyecto trata de analizar la empresa LUIS CAPDEVILA, S.A. y redactar la documentación necesaria para el sistema de Calidad con relación a la normativa ISO 9001:2008. En la primera parte del proyecto se reflejan toda la serie de conceptos básicos relacionados con la Calidad. Seguidamente se analiza la empresa tanto desde el punto de vista organizativo como desde la visión de los procesos. Para el análisis organizativo se ha propuesto un análisis externo e interno de la empresa. Se valoran aspectos como: el mercado actual, el contexto histórico actual, la demanda y sus previsiones, en la visión externa de LUIS CAPDEVILA, S.A. La valoración de los productos comercializados, la capacidad productiva, la estructura organizativa y la política de la organización, entre otros, son las variables que configuran las capacidades internas de la empresa. Todos estos aspectos anteriormente referidos se resumen en una tabla de análisis DAFO. Con la formación del grupo de Calidad se evalúa la empresa desde el punto de vista de los procesos, Se definen los procesos seguidos y conocidos por la organización y se jerarquizan los procesos principales. Éstos se subdividen en subprocesos y se añaden aquellos nuevos que contribuirán a mejorar el funcionamiento de la empresa. Por último, se valoran aspectos relacionados con la norma para formar un grupo de procesos dedicados al cumplimiento de la normativa de Calidad. Una vez identificados y definidos los procesos se justifican y elaboran mediante procedimientos, que quedan reflejados en el Manual correspondiente. En relación a los procedimientos se confecciona el Manual de Calidad, donde se muestran todos los aspectos relacionados para el cumplimiento de la normativa, ISO 9001:2008. Para la aplicación de los dos manuales también se redactan todos aquellos documentos necesarios, así como, los formatos y registros correspondientes. Toda la documentación generada por la aplicación del sistema de Calidad se anexa al proyecto en dos grandes documentos: Manual de Calidad y Manual de Procedimientos
