Género y política en los procesos electorales : la participación política de la mujer como candidata y electa en las elecciones autonómicas y locales de 1995 en Canarias

En este artículo se presenta un estudio descriptivo de la presencia femenina en las listas electorales de las elecciones autonómicas y locales de 1995 y, como consecuencia de éstas, en las instituciones políticas de las Islas Canarias durante la legislatura 1995-1999. Atendiendo a los porcentajes de mujeres como candidata y electa, su distribución en las listas electorales, los cargos políticos ocupados, su diferente presencia según el tipo de institución y la dimensión de la circunscripción, el autor detecta dos mecanismos principales de exclusión de la mujer: la lejanía institucional y los puestos de salida, mientras que el carácter urbano o rural de la circunscripción tiene un efecto de menor consideración.This paper presents a descriptive survey on the female presence in electoral rolls for the 1995 regional and local elections in the Canary Islands, and as elected members of the canarian political institutions during the 1995-1999 term. Regarding women's percentages as candidattes and elects, their distribution within electoral rolls, their different wheight in the three institutional levels analized (local, insular, regional), and the different population levels of the electoral districts, the author detects two main mechanismes of exclusion of women: institutional distance and the position in electoral rolls, while the urban or rural character of the different districts seems not to have any decisive role to play

Adquisición de la primera y segunda lengua en aprendientes en edad infantil y adulta.

With the aim of applying useful and beneficial techniques in foreign language teaching, it is important to understand the inner processes of language acquisition, initially in our mother tongue, so as to analyze the same processes in second language acquisition. We will bear in mind not only the similarities but also the differences in both cases, since we believe that we may apply fruitful methods and strategies of the acquisition of the L1 into the learning of the L2. On the contrary, it is also essential to take into account circumstantial differences between the natural acquisition of our language as native speakers, and those circumstances of second language learners. Those factors are intimately related to age, if the learner acquires the language in question in their infancy or at adulthood, if the language is learned in a meaningful context as is their natural social environment, or if it is learned in the classroom with its corresponding limitations, etc. We will study the advantages that offer a teaching context for those students whose only opportunity to use the language is the classroom, despite the prospective obstacles implied in a non-native environment

Playing with Collective Memories: Julian Barne's "England, England" and New Labour's Rebranding of Britain

In a situation of national identity crisis due to the loss of Empire, globalization and mass migration, Britain has recently been looking for a new orientation of its role in the world. Being an attempt to influence and change the conception of Britishness, New Labour's modernization programme in the 1997 general election illustrates the way national identities, understood as imagined communities, are artificially and conveniently constructed by the political elite. Similarly, history writing, essential for the constitution of the national identity, undergoes an analogous process in which historical accounts are manipulated to exhibit convenient versions of the nation's past. In this context, Julian Barnes's novel England, England (1998) epitomizes a satirical portrayal of the artful construction of Englishness, hyperbolizing New Labour's modernization project.Al encontrarse Gran Bretaña en un periodo de crisis de identidad nacional, ha buscado recientemente una nueva orientación a su postura exterior en el mundo. El programa de modernización de New Labour en las elecciones generales de 1997 fue un intento de influir y modificar la concepción de "Britanidad", lo que demuestra que la identidad nacional, entendida como comunidad imaginada, es construida artificialmente por la élite política. Asimismo, la construcción de la historia, esencial por otra parte para la formación de la identidad nacional, experimenta un proceso análogo en el que la historia es manipulada para ofrecer una versión idónea del pasado de una nación. En este contexto, la novela de Julian Barnes England, England (1998) personifica el retrato satírico de la construcción artificial de "lo inglés", hiperbolizando el proyecto de modernización de New Labour

Análisis descriptivo de Vaughan systems: ventajas y desventajas de un método audiolingual

This article explores the advantages and disadvantages of English language immersion courses, subsidized by the Spanish Ministry of Education and organized by the International University Menendez Pelayo, which hires the services of the American company Vaughan Systems. These immersion courses, called “Immersion for Verbal Agility”, follow the “Vaughan Method” - a language learning methodology based, according to the author, on the well-known Audiolingual and Grammar Translation methods. The present study, based on observation and participation in one of the mentioned intensive courses, analyses the assets and pitfalls of what it is now a traditional language teaching method, providing a theoretical discussion on Second Language Acquisition and a brief review of the corresponding second language teaching methods.El presente artículo explora las ventajas y desventajas de los Cursos de Inmersión Lingüística subvencionados por el Ministerio de Educación, impartidos en la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, y organizados por la compañía norteamericana Vaughan Systems. Estos cursos de inmersión, llamados Cursos de “Verbal Agility” o fluidez verbal, siguen lo que han llamado Método Vaughan, una metodología de enseñanza del Inglés que se basa, según el autor, en el conocido método Audiolingual, y el método de Gramática Traducción. El presente estudio, basado en la observación y participación en uno de los mencionados cursos, analiza los beneficios y los obstáculos de lo que ahora es un método de enseñanza tradicional, aportando una discusión teórica sobre la Adquisición de la Segunda Lengua y un breve resumen de los correspondientes métodos de enseñanza de segundas lenguas

British Intellectuals and Blairism: Counter-Hegemonic Voices during Tony Blair’s Premiership

This study looks into the subversive cultural production of British intellectuals against the government of Tony Blair. My dissertation explores how the writers, thinkers and cultural figures of the time who openly reacted against the government of Margaret Thatcher and her controversial cuts in public services, such as education and culture, gradually experienced disenchantment with the politics of the newly elected Labour leader. The messianic politician, popularly acclaimed by the masses in 1997, soon became the target of left-wing intellectuals who criticised his deconstruction of socialist values and the old principles of the Labour Party. The analysis of these socio-cultural changes takes place through the study of a corpus of textual and cultural constructs produced by the most significant intellectuals of the time, who publicly denounced Blair‘s government

This article examines the different circumstances under which infant and adult learners develop speaking skills. We will see the facilities or difficulties in both cases in order to focus on the real possibilities of adults to develop a high level of speaking proficiency. We will see what the role of the teacher is in order to improve the learners’ skills, the features of oral communication that need to be improved and which strategies can be used to overcome the difficulties.Este artículo analiza las diferentes circunstancias en las que niños y adultos desarrollan las destrezas orales. Veremos las facilidades y dificultades en ambos casos para así centrarnos en las posibilidades reales que tienen los adultos de alcanzar un alto nivel de competencia oral. Veremos también cual es el papel del profesor en este contexto, para mejorar las capacidades de los alumnos, y ver cuáles son los elementos de la comunicación oral que hay que mejorar y qué estrategias se pueden aplicar para superar las dificultades
