A tmQCD mixed-action approach to flavour physics
We discuss a mixed-action approach in which sea quarks are regularised using
non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions, while a fully-twisted
tmQCD action is used for valence quarks. In this setup, automatic
improvement is preserved for valence observables, apart from small residual
effects from the sea. A strategy for matching sea and valence is
set up, and carried out for CLS ensembles with open boundary
conditions at several simulation points. The scaling of basic light-quark
observables such as the pseudoscalar meson decay constant is studied, as well
as the isospin splitting of pseudoscalar meson masses.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Proceedings of the 35th International Symposium

The audio-visuals (AV), the most universal mass medium, are considered as an extension of our physical and psychical faculties. Able to capture human emotions, they do not express by words but by the pitch, gestures, facial expression and body language. How is it possible that such an important medium has not be taken into account as a common channel of scientific communication? The answer could be: it does not form part of our habits, there is some pessimism about its productivity and there is a lack of policies to stimulate its use. The authors think that AV are an important tool to be used for science communication and research. This assay aims to be a small contribution to encourage people to use AV and also to give them some guidelines about how to do the script and the production. Moreover, it also includes references of some specific books for people who want to deepen in technical aspects (script and production)
Remote Sub-Wavelength Addressing of Quantum Emitters with Chirped Pulses
We propose to use chirped pulses propagating near a bandgap to remotely
address quantum emitters with sub-wavelength resolution. We introduce a
particular family of chirped pulses that dynamically self-focus during their
evolution in a medium with a quadratic dispersion relation. We analytically
describe how the focusing distance and width of the pulse can be tuned through
its initial parameters. We show that the interaction of such pulses with a
quantum emitter is highly sensitive to its position due to effective
Landau-Zener processes induced by the pulse chirping. Our results propose pulse
engineering as a powerful control and probing tool in the field of quantum
emitters coupled to structured reservoirs.Comment: 5+3 pages, 3+2 figure
Anthropometric measures as predictive indicators of metabolic risk in a population of “holy week costaleros”
Preventive measures are a priority in those groups that perform intense physical efforts without physical preparation and that can also be overweight or obese. One of the groups that reflect these characteristics is the costaleros of the Holy Week of Andalusia, Spain. This paper aims to describe the effect of obesity on blood pressure. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 101 costaleros. The anthropometric measures were determined through segmental impedance. Cardiac
recovery and anaerobic power were measured through the Ruffier–Dickson test and the Abalakov test, respectively. Blood pressure was measured when the individuals were at rest. The Kruskal–Wallis test was applied for of continuous parameters and the X2 test for dichotomous measures. Binary logistic regression models were used for the subsequent analysis with R-square and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. The average population was 28 years of age, 173.7 cm tall, and 82.59 Kg weigh. The excess of body fat was 11.27 Kg and Body Mass Index was 27.33 Kg/m2. 72.3% showed abnormal blood pressure and 68.2% were overweight. 32.7% had a waist-hip ratio higher than 0.94. The probability of presenting abnormal blood pressure was higher among the subjects whose fat content was higher and muscle content was lower
Seasonal and vertical dynamics in the trophic structure of a temperate zooplankton assemblage
We determined the stable nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N values) and body size of taxonomic groups in a zooplankton community in the Cantabrian Sea (southern Bay of Biscay) to explore seasonal and depth (0–2000 m) variations in the size‐based trophic structure and their coupling to the production cycle. The positive linear relationship between δ15N values and log‐transformed body size reflects the dominance of new vs. regenerated production. The slope of the relationship (b) is high during productive periods and low when herbivory declines and the food web is more dependent on recycled production. This variation can be attributed to high δ15N values of the smallest plankton after repetitive cycles of microbial degradation. Downward transport of organic matter after the spring phytoplankton bloom was captured by a steady variation from low values of b at the surface to high values at the bathypelagic zone, where the imprint of the spring production pulse could be detected. Variation in b reveals that the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zooplankton communities are as dynamic as their epipelagic counterparts. This shows the efficiency of δ15N vs. body size relationships to capture fast, transient ecosystem processes without need for lengthy incubations or complex rate measurements
Time Series Heterogeneous Co-execution on CPU+GPU
Time series motif (similarities) and discords discovery is one of the most important and challenging problems nowadays for time series analytics. We use an algorithm called “scrimp” that excels in collecting the relevant information of time series by reducing the computational complexity of the searching. Starting from the sequential algorithm we develop parallel alternatives based on a variety of scheduling policies that target different computing devices in a system that integrates a CPU multicore and an embedded GPU. These policies are named Dynamic -using Intel TBB- and Static -using C++11 threads- when targeting the CPU, and they are compared to a heterogeneous adaptive approach named LogFit -using Intel TBB and OpenCL- when targeting the co-execution on the CPU and GPU.Universidad de Málaga.
