Competitive Local Routing with Constraints
Let be a set of vertices in the plane and a set of non-crossing
line segments between vertices in , called constraints. Two vertices are
visible if the straight line segment connecting them does not properly
intersect any constraints. The constrained -graph is constructed by
partitioning the plane around each vertex into disjoint cones, each with
aperture , and adding an edge to the `closest' visible vertex
in each cone. We consider how to route on the constrained -graph. We
first show that no deterministic 1-local routing algorithm is
-competitive on all pairs of vertices of the constrained
-graph. After that, we show how to route between any two visible
vertices of the constrained -graph using only 1-local information.
Our routing algorithm guarantees that the returned path is 2-competitive.
Additionally, we provide a 1-local 18-competitive routing algorithm for visible
vertices in the constrained half--graph, a subgraph of the
constrained -graph that is equivalent to the Delaunay graph where the
empty region is an equilateral triangle. To the best of our knowledge, these
are the first local routing algorithms in the constrained setting with
guarantees on the length of the returned path
Continuous Yao Graphs
In this paper, we introduce a variation of the well-studied Yao graphs. Given
a set of points and an angle , we
define the continuous Yao graph with vertex set and angle
as follows. For each , we add an edge from to in
if there exists a cone with apex and aperture such
that is the closest point to inside this cone.
We study the spanning ratio of for different values of .
Using a new algebraic technique, we show that is a spanner when
. We believe that this technique may be of independent
interest. We also show that is not a spanner, and that
may be disconnected for .Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Presented at CCCG 201
A fast stratospheric chemistry solver: the E4CHEM submodel for the atmospheric chemistry global circulation model EMAC
The atmospheric chemistry general circulation model ECHAM5/MESSy (EMAC) and the atmospheric chemistry box model CAABA are extended by a computationally very efficient submodel for atmospheric chemistry, E4CHEM. It focuses on stratospheric chemistry but also includes background tropospheric chemistry. It is based on the chemistry of MAECHAM4-CHEM and is intended to serve as a simple and fast alternative to the flexible but also computationally more demanding submodel MECCA. In a model setup with E4CHEM, EMAC is now also suitable for simulations of longer time scales. The reaction mechanism contains basic O3, CH4, CO, HOx, NOx, and ClOx gas phase chemistry. In addition, E4CHEM includes optional fast routines for heterogeneous reactions on sulphate aerosols and polar stratospheric clouds (substituting the existing submodels PSC and HETCHEM), and scavenging (substituting the existing submodel SCAV). We describe the implementation of E4CHEM into the MESSy structure of CAABA and EMAC. For some species the steady state in the box model differs by up to 100% when compared to results from CAABA/MECCA due to different reaction rates. After an update of the reaction rates in E4CHEM the mixing ratios in both boxmodel and 3-D model simulations are in satisfactory agreement with the results from a simulation where MECCA with a similar chemistry scheme was employed. Finally, a comparison against a simulation with a more complex and already evaluated chemical mechanism is presented in order to discuss shortcomings associated with the simplification of the chemical mechanism
Crystalline silicate dust around evolved stars I. The sample stars
This is the first paper in a series of three where we present the first
comprehensive inventory of solid state emission bands observed in a sample of
17 oxygen-rich circumstellar dust shells surrounding evolved stars. The data
were taken with the Short and Long Wavelength Spectrographs on board of the
Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and cover the 2.4 to 195 micron wavelength
range. The spectra show the presence of broad 10 and 18 micron bands that can
be attributed to amorphous silicates. In addition, at least 49 narrow bands are
found whose position and width indicate they can be attributed to crystalline
silicates. Almost all of these bands were not known before ISO. We have
measured the peak positions, widths and strengths of the individual, continuum
subtracted bands. Based on these measurements, we were able to order the
spectra in sequence of decreasing crystalline silicate band strength. We found
that the strength of the emission bands correlates with the geometry of the
circumstellar shell, as derived from direct imaging or inferred from the shape
of the spectral energy distribution. This naturally divides the sample into
objects that show a disk-like geometry (strong crystalline silicate bands), and
objects whose dust shell is characteristic of an outflow (weak crystalline
silicate bands). All stars with the 33.6 micron forsterite band stronger than
20 percent over continuum are disk sources. We define spectral regions (called
complexes) where a concentration of emission bands is evident, at 10, 18, 23,
28, 33, 40 and 60 micron. We derive average shapes for these complexes and
compare these to the individual band shapes of the programme stars.Comment: 41 pages, 20 figures, accepted by A&A. Tables 4 to 20 are only

New and Improved Spanning Ratios for Yao Graphs
For a set of points in the plane and a fixed integer k \u3e 0, the Yao graph Yk partitions the space around each point into k equiangular cones of angle Î = 2Ï/k, and connects each point to a nearest neighbor in each cone. It is known for all Yao graphs, with the sole exception of Y5, whether or not they are geometric spanners. In this paper we close this gap by showing that for odd k â„ 5, the spanning ratio of Yk is at most 1/(1â2sin(3Î/8)), which gives the first constant upper bound for Y5, and is an improvement over the previous bound of 1/(1â2sin(Î/2)) for odd k â„ 7. We further reduce the upper bound on the spanning ratio for Y5 from 10.9 to 2 + â3 â 3.74, which falls slightly below the lower bound of 3.79 established for the spanning ratio of â5 (â-graphs differ from Yao graphs only in the way they select the closest neighbor in each cone). This is the first such separation between a Yao and â-graph with the same number of cones. We also give a lower bound of 2.87 on the spanning ratio of Y5. Finally, we revisit the Y6 graph, which plays a particularly important role as the transition between the graphs (k \u3e 6) for which simple inductive proofs are known, and the graphs (k †6) whose best spanning ratios have been established by complex arguments. Here we reduce the known spanning ratio of Y6 from 17.6 to 5.8, getting closer to the spanning ratio of 2 established for â6
