Behind the Badge: Addressing Organizational and Operational Stress in Policing Mental Health

    No full text
Police officers in the UK and Ireland experience comparable mental health challenges, largely due to workplace culture and repeated exposure to trauma. Poor management, bullying, and lack of organzational support contribute as much to mental health challenges—if not more—than traumatic incidents themselves. Police forces must prioritize structural and cultural changes, not just individual interventions, to better support the mental health of their members

Политизация международных организаций: как не признающие государства препятствуют членству Косово

    No full text
The politicization of international organizations undermines their integrity and effectiveness. This article focuses on the attempts to block and hinder Kosovo’s membership in the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), illustrating how states that do not recognize Kosovo use their political clout to hinder its membership. Despite Kosovo fulfilling all the necessary requirements, a few influential states have obstructed its accession by exploiting their roles within these organizations. The article highlights biased actions by member states, revealing a pattern of politicization and manipulation. It discusses the impact on neutrality, impartiality, and rule-based governance, calling for robust mechanisms to protect the integrity of international organizations. The article contributes to the broader debate on how member-state politicization affects the functioning of international organizations in a polarized world.

Gender, Trauma, and the Use of Trauma, Diversity and Inclusivity Principles During Probation and Parole Supervision

    No full text
Martinson (1974) argued that Nothing Works in the rehabilitation of justice impacted individuals. In response, Andrews and Kiesling (1980) developed a set of core correctional practices (CCPs) that could be used by probation and parole officers to enhance correctional outcomes for justice impacted individuals. More recently, trauma responsive approaches have emerged as another hypothesized effective strategy for dealing with justice impacted individuals who experience high levels of trauma (Miller & Najavits, 2012). This study investigates the nature and prevalence of probable traumatic experiences among justice impacted individuals on probation with a focus on gender differences (N ≈ 329). The study also investigates if probation and parole officers who were recently trained in a model of community supervision that blends trauma responsiveness with core correctional practices—the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General’s Made-in-Ontario Core Correctional Practices (CCP) Model of Community Supervision- are more likely to apply trauma, diversity and inclusivity (TDI) principles in their interactions with clients after the training. The study uses client case notes prepared by probation and parole officers. Results showed that despite women reporting significantly higher probable trauma, trauma-informed approaches were applied similarly across gender groups. In addition, TDI implementation was consistent regardless of trauma status in the context of CCP. This highlights the need for more targeted trauma-informed approaches based on individual needs rather than a generalized application of trauma-informed intervention. The opinions and views expressed in this report reflect those of the author and not the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. Involvement in Education Among Parents with ADHD Symptoms: An Exploration of Motivations and Behaviours

    No full text
The study examines parental involvement (PI) in education among families with elevated symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder impacting both children and adults, which leads to challenges in academic achievement, parenting, and family functioning. This study aims to explore differences in parental involvement, motivations, and behaviours between parents with elevated symptoms of ADHD and those without. Despite its prevalence, research on parental involvement for parents with ADHD symptoms is scarce. This study aims to fill this gap by utilizing the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler model of parental involvement. We hypothesized that parents with ADHD symptoms would report lower PI motivations, less frequent involvement behaviours, and lower engagement in certain parenting behaviours. Cross-sectional data was collected during the spring of 2021; parental respondents completed self-report measures related to parental involvement behaviours and motivations. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed significant differences between groups across eight of the nine outcome variables. Contrary to previous findings, parents with ADHD symptoms reported higher motivations and frequency of involvement than parents without ADHD. Implications include extending the concept of the positive illusory bias to adults, as these parents perceived themselves as highly motivated and effective across parenting domains

    Racialized Names and Sound Symbolism

    No full text
Sound symbolism links certain kinds of phonemes to perceptual properties (e.g., sonorants with roundness and voiceless stops with spikiness). Sidhu et al. (2019) applied this to names and personality traits, showing that round- and spiky-sounding names went with different personality factors. We examined name sound symbolism using the Stereotype Content Model’s warmth and competence dimensions. We also tested whether associations generalize to typically Black names, unlike prior studies that used typically culturally White names (Sidhu et al., 2019; Sidhu & Pexman, 2015). Participants (N = 66) rated 64 names on how likely they expected a person with that name to possess a given trait (related to warmth or competence). We found that round-sounding names were judged higher in warmth and competence, regardless of race or gender. Notably, typically Black names were rated higher on both dimensions. We also considered individual differences in feelings towards different groups. Our findings provide insight into sound symbolism and social cognition
