    A changing climate: a review of the accommodation and communication methods, for discussing complex, scientific topics, in county extension in Kansas and Oklahoma

TomlinsonThe purpose of this study was to determine specific communication accommodations used by county agricultural and natural resource agents/educators when discussing complex, scientific topics like climate change. Four research objectives were used to determine 1) background and experience of agents/educators, 2) how agents/educators are communicating on complex, scientific topics, 3) climate-change information received and preferred method of receiving future training, and 4) agents’/educators’ communication adjustment. This study was guided by Communication Accommodation Theory to understand how agents/educators are adjusting their communication when speaking to producers with varying education levels, grammar usage, and seeking different types of climate information. This study utilized a mixed method, quantitative and qualitative, survey (n = 42). Extension in Kansas and Oklahoma had not publicized an organizational stance on climate change. Kansas agents and Oklahoma educators had access to climate-change information through a variety of internal and external sources. Agents/educators had a strong background in agriculture and varying ranges of experience in the position. The main communication channel producers utilized to contact agents/educators was the telephone (52.24%). Both states indicated they are conducting an average of five on-farm visits a month. Over half (25) of agents/educators indicated they had received some form of climate-change information since becoming an agent/educator. Agents/educators indicated they received this information from sources external to Extension in Kansas and Oklahoma. They also indicated future training should be interactive and close to home. This study found agents/educators are accommodating in their responses to agricultural producers’ requests for climate-change information, but also showed nonaccommodating tendencies. Agents/educators were viewed as nonaccommodating when they used improper grammar, improper email format, or told the producer there was no need for concern on their perceived climate issue. Agents/educators offered to make site visits to the producers’ field, referred to specialists, and worked to establish credibility. This study determined agents/educators have the background and information sources to adequately and effectively answer producers’ questions about climate change. It was determined the reason agents/educators do not want climate-change conversations is because of a lack of formal training on the matter, and they do not feel comfortable. This study recommends Extension provide communication and climate-change training for agents/educators. It also recommends agents/educators continue to conduct on-farm visits as they are vital to interpersonal communication with agricultural producers. Extension should take steps to reach a younger audience and help young people become involved in agriculture

    Communicating Climate Change: A Qualitative Study Exploring how Communicators and Educators are Approaching Climate-Change Discussions

    The scientific community has come to the conclusion that the climate is changing, but the existence of climate change continues to be rejected or doubted, creating communication challenges for professionals. The purpose of this study was to determine how education and communication professionals involved in climate-change communication are framing the discussions about climate change with agricultural producers. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted to address terminology usage, challenges encountered, overcoming challenges, and utilization of social media when educating and communicating about climate change. Responses from professionals indicated: 1) they do not avoid using the term “climate change” but are concerned about jargon in materials; 2) the majority agreed the public believes climate change is happening; 3) not addressing the root causes of climate change; 4) framing messages; 5) addressing adaption options using local data; and 6) climate organizations are promoting materials on social media. This study recommends practitioners frame conversations depending on the audience and avoid using terminology that is not accepted by the target audience. Future research should investigate the effectiveness and uses of social media to engage desired audiences

    A literature review of intimate partner violence and its classifications

    Intimate partner violence is an important issue and attempts to distinguish typologies of intimate partner violence are necessary to understand the complexities of intimate partner violence, its various causes, correlates, and consequences. Over the last two decades, much research was aimed at classifying types of violence depending on the similarities and differences in patterns of violence. However, it is difficult to find a single account that provides a succinct and up-to-date overview of these classifications. As a result, considerable effort is required to identify and retrieve relevant papers to understand each typology or classification of intimate partner violence. This article provides a succinct and up-to-date integrative review of various classifications of intimate partner violence. Typologies by form of abuse, type of violence, type of perpetrator (men and women) are critically reviewed in the light of available literature and the strengths and limitations of each are described. Recommendations for further research are also provided

    Distribution of oxygen isotopes in the water masses of Drake Passage and the South Atlantic

    Measurements of the ratio of stable isotopes of oxygen (18O and 16O) from samples collected on World Ocean Circulation Experiment sections SR1b (eastern Drake Passage) and A11 (Punta Arenas to Cape Town) are used, together with hydrographic data, to deduce information about the formation and variability of South Atlantic and Southern Ocean water masses. The Drake Passage surface waters south of the Polar Front (PF) are isotopically light (δ18O around -0.4‰) owing to the influence of meteoric waters. The salinity and δ18O of the A11 surface waters yield an apparent freshwater end-member which is much isotopically lighter than the local precipitation, thus advection of these waters from farther south dominates over local effects in determining the surface water properties. The Drake Passage section shows unusual proximity of the two main fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (the PF and Subantarctic Front (SAF)), and we observe cold, fresh, and isotopically light water derived from the temperature-minimum Winter Water at the SAF. This water is of the correct density to freshen the intermediate water north of the SAF and thus play a role in the formation of the comparatively fresh Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) of the South Atlantic. This confirms the role of Antarctic water in forming the South Atlantic variety of AAIW. Across the A11 section the oxygen isotope and salinity data at the AAIW core show very similar traces, with waters in the Malvinas Current loop showing lowest values of both. At the eastern boundary of the South Atlantic, the input of Red Sea Water from east of South Africa is observed via the presence of anomalously isotopically heavy AAIW. We deduce potentially significant temporal variability in the isotopic composition of Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW) by comparing the Drake Passage data to earlier data covering the outflow of the Weddell Sea. The A11 data show WSDW consistent with such variability, indicating that its effects could persist in the waters as they flow north into the western South Atlantic. We speculate that such variability could be due to small changes in the amount of glacial ice melt in WSDW
