Dressing and addressing the mental patient: the uses of clothing in the admission, care and employment of residents in English provincial mental hospitals, c. 1860–1960

    Get PDF
Scholars of insanity and its historical antecedents have paid very little attention to personal and institutional clothing. Such dress, distributed to patients in mental institutions, has always been inscribed with the conflicting narratives of the period in which it was made and worn. The language of civil and medical authority is more evident than personal choice in the shape and address of the attire. This article examines clothing worn by patients in three Devon mental hospitals during the century before 1960. We consider the ways in which institutional clothing formed part of a hospital regimen of overt control, as well as suiting considerations of economy and employment that figured in these institutions

Abstract In 2007, the University of Central Lancashire developed a Foundation Degree in Community Leadership. This course was initially conceived to meet a demand within the female South Asian community of Burnley for a higher education programme that would build their capacity to be more effective community activists, and moreover, a requirement for a course that would be able to meet family, cultural and social needs. The purpose of this paper is to explore the value of widening participation to higher education for South Asian women from Burnley in terms of social capital, community cohesion and contribution to the local knowledge economy. The authors used an action research methodology as part of a reflective research process influenced by the work of Paulo Freire (Freire, 1996). This paper argues that widening participation to higher education for women from minority backgrounds is a valuable tool in addressing cultural and social segregation. Moreover, it demonstrates an added value that by broadening the knowledge economy of the Pakistani diaspora in Burnley there is a resulting resonance within the heritage domicile of Gujrat, Pakistan

Beyond rhetoric? Evaluating the Responsibility to Protect as a norm of humanitarian intervention

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine whether, after 16 years or more of its development, R2P has emerged as an international norm of intervention. As an idea, it is clear that R2P has a considerable degree of prominence within international discourse. As we will come to see, there has been much work undertaken in the development of its language and conceptual framework over the years. But, whilst this architecture is important to the process of its development as an international norm, it will be argued that more is needed to support the claim that R2P has fully emerged as an international norm, i.e R2P’s capacity to influence and shape the decision-making of states

The Rhetoric of Urban Renewal: Redevelopment in Kansas City's Crossroads Arts District

    Get PDF
Cities throughout the United States have attempted to rehabilitate their neglected urban neighborhoods. These efforts have been the result of rhetorical struggles that involve the stakeholders of the neighborhoods - residents, governments and businesses. In this dissertation, I argue that the rhetoric surrounding contemporary urban renewal efforts has been constrained by the neoliberal occupational psychosis. I specifically examine how the discourses of these stakeholders have shaped the identity, infrastructure, and resources of the Crossroads Arts District, an urban neighborhood in Kansas City. This neighborhood was founded by artists who were seeking affordable spaces for living and working. However, this identity changed when developers began building upscale condominiums and apartments within the neighborhood. This change can be attributed to what Maurice Charland (1987) calls constitutive rhetoric. As the neighborhood was populated, its infrastructure also evolved. In doing so, the city strived to establish what Michel de Certeau (1984) refers to as a place. Not only did the city shape the neighborhood's infrastructure, but it also provided tax incentives for developers. To receive these incentives developers relied on what Aune (2001) calls "the rhetoric of economic correctness.
