    A virtual object-location task for children: Gender and videogame experience influence navigation; age impacts memory and completion time

    The use of virtual reality-based tasks for studying memory has increased considerably. Most of the studies that have looked at child population factors that influence performance on such tasks have been focused on cognitive variables. However, little attention has been paid to the impact of non-cognitive skills. In the present paper, we tested 52 typically-developing children aged 5-12 years in a virtual object-location task. The task assessed their spatial short-term memory for the location of three objects in a virtual city. The virtual task environment was presented using a 3D application consisting of a 120" stereoscopic screen and a gamepad interface. Measures of learning and displacement indicators in the virtual environment, 3D perception, satisfaction, and usability were obtained. We assessed the children's videogame experience, their visuospatial span, their ability to build blocks, and emotional and behavioral outcomes. The results indicate that learning improved with age. Significant effects on the speed of navigation were found favoring boys and those more experienced with videogames. Visuospatial skills correlated mainly with ability to recall object positions, but the correlation was weak. Longer paths were related with higher scores of withdrawal behavior, attention problems, and a lower visuospatial span. Aggressiveness and experience with the device used for interaction were related with faster navigation. However, the correlations indicated only weak associations among these variables

    Water quality and quantity assessment of pervious pavements performance in experimental car park areas

    Pervious pavements have become one of the most used sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) techniques in car parks. This research paper presents the results of monitoring water quality from several experimental car park areas designed and constructed in Spain with bays made of interlocking concrete block pavement, porous asphalt, polymer-modified porous concrete and reinforced grass with plastic and concrete cells. Moreover, two different sub-base materials were used (limestone aggregates and basic oxygen furnace slag). This study therefore encompasses the majority of the materials used as permeable surfaces and sub-base layers all over the world. Effluent from the test bays was monitored for dissolved oxygen, pH, electric conductivity, total suspended solids, turbidity and total petroleum hydrocarbons in order to analyze the behaviour shown by each combination of surface and sub-base materials. In addition, permeability tests were undertaken in all car parks using the ‘Laboratorio Caminos Santander’ permeameter and the Cantabrian Portable Infiltrometer. All results are presented together with the influence of surface and sub-base materials on water quality indicators using bivariate correlation statistical analysis at a confidence level of 95%.     On the difference of torus geometry between hidden and non-hidden broad line active galactic nuclei

    We present results from the fitting of infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions of 21 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with clumpy torus models. We compiled high spatial resolution (∼0.3\sim 0.3--0.70.7 arcsec) mid-IR NN-band spectroscopy, QQ-band imaging and nuclear near- and mid-IR photometry from the literature. Combining these nuclear near- and mid-IR observations, far-IR photometry and clumpy torus models, enables us to put constraints on the torus properties and geometry. We divide the sample into three types according to the broad line region (BLR) properties; type-1s, type-2s with scattered or hidden broad line region (HBLR) previously observed, and type-2s without any published HBLR signature (NHBLR). Comparing the torus model parameters gives us the first quantitative torus geometrical view for each subgroup. We find that NHBLR AGN have smaller torus opening angles and larger covering factors than those of HBLR AGN. This suggests that the chance to observe scattered (polarized) flux from the BLR in NHBLR could be reduced by the dual effects of (a) less scattering medium due to the reduced scattering volume given the small torus opening angle and (b) the increased torus obscuration between the observer and the scattering region. These effects give a reasonable explanation for the lack of observed HBLR in some type-2 AGN.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    High plasma levels of soluble ST2 but not its ligand IL-33 is associated with severe forms of pediatric dengue

    Q2Q1766-771Identification of early determinants of dengue disease progression, which could potentially enable individualized patient care are needed at present times. Soluble ST2 (sST2) has been recently reported to be elevated in the serum of children older than 2 years old and adults with dengue infection and it was correlated with secondary infections as well as with severe presentations of the disease. The mechanism by which secreted ST2 is linked to severe dengue and plasma leakage remains unclear. One possibility is that IL-33 ligand may be elevated, contributing to membrane bound ST2 as part of the immune activation in dengue infection. We determined plasma levels of sST2 and the ligand IL-33 in 66 children with acute secondary dengue infections clinically classified using the guidelines of the World Health Organization, 2009. Dengue infection showed significant increases in cytokines IL-12p70, IL-10, IL-8, IL-6, IL-1β and TNFα measured by flow cytometry based assay compared to uninfected individuals. In contrast, IL-33 levels remained unchanged between infected and uninfected individuals. The levels of sST2 positively correlated with values of IL-6 and IL-8 and inversely correlated with number of median value of platelet levels. In addition to circulating cytokine positive correlations we found that sST2 and isoenzyme creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), a marker of myocardial muscle damage present in severe dengue cases were associated. Our pediatric study concluded that in dengue infections sST2 elevation does not involve concomitant changes of IL-33 ligand. We propose a study to assess its value as a predictor factor of disease severity

    Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and obesity significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The measurement of blood pressure (BP) is critical in monitoring and managing cardiovascular disease hence new wearable devices are being developed to make BP more accessible to physicians and patients. Several wearables utilize photoplethysmography from the wrist vasculature to derive BP assessment although many of these devices are still at the experimental stage. With the ultimate goal of supporting instrument development, we have developed a model of the photoplethysmographic waveform derived from the radial artery at the volar surface of the wrist. To do so we have utilized the relation between vessel biomechanics through Finite Element Method and Monte Carlo light transport model. The model shows similar features to that seen in PPG waveform captured using an off the shelf device. We observe the influence of body mass index on the PPG signal. A degradation the PPG signal of up to 40% in AC to DC signal ratio was thus observed

    Cost-Utility of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Fibromyalgia versus a Multicomponent Intervention and Usual Care: A 12-Month Randomized Controlled Trial (EUDAIMON Study)

    Fibromyalgia (FM) is a prevalent, chronic, disabling, pain syndrome that implies high healthcare costs. Economic evaluations of potentially effective treatments for FM are needed. The aim of this study was to analyze the cost-utility of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as an add-on to treatment-as-usual (TAU) for patients with FM compared to an adjuvant multicomponent intervention (FibroQoL) and to TAU. We performed an economic evaluation alongside a 12 month, randomized, controlled trial; data from 204 (68 per study arm) of the 225 patients (90.1%) were included in the cost-utility analyses, which were conducted both under the government and the public healthcare system perspectives. The main outcome measures were the EuroQol (EQ-5D-5L) for assessing Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) and improvements in health-related quality of life, and the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI) for estimating direct and indirect costs. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were also calculated. Two sensitivity analyses (intention-to-treat, ITT, and per protocol, PPA) were conducted. The results indicated that MBSR achieved a significant reduction in costs compared to the other study arms (p < 0.05 in the completers sample), especially in terms of indirect costs and primary healthcare services. It also produced a significant incremental effect compared to TAU in the ITT sample (Delta QALYs = 0.053, p < 0.05, where QALYs represents quality-adjusted life years). Overall, our findings support the efficiency of MBSR over FibroQoL and TAU specifically within a Spanish public healthcare context

    PCIe Gen5 Physical Layer Equalization Tuning by Using K-means Clustering and Gaussian Process Regression Modeling in Industrial Post-silicon Validation

    Peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) is a high-performance interconnect architecture widely adopted in the computer industry. The continuously increasing bandwidth demand from new applications has led to the development of the PCIe Gen5, reaching data rates of 32 GT/s. To mitigate undesired channel effects due to such high-speed, the PCIe specification defines an equalization process at the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx). Current post-silicon validation practices consist of finding an optimal subset of Tx and Rx coefficients by measuring the eye diagrams across different channels. However, these experiments are very time consuming since they require massive lab measurements. In this paper, we use a K-means approach to cluster all available post-silicon data from different channels and feed those clusters to a Gaussian process regression (GPR)-based metamodel for each channel. We then perform a surrogate-based optimization to obtain the optimal tuning settings for the specific channels.     Information exploitation processes use different data mining algorithms for obtaining knowledge patterns from data obtained on the problem domain. One of the assumptions when working with these algorithms is that the complexity of the membership domain of the cases they use does not affect the quality of the obtained results. So, it is important to analyze the behavior of the information exploitation process through the discovery of group membership rules by using clustering and induction algorithms. This research characterizes the complexity of the domains in terms of the pieces of knowledge that describe them and information exploitation processes they seek to discover. The results of the experiments show that, in the case of the process for discovering group membership rules, the quality of the patterns differs depending on the algorithms used in the process and the complexity of the domains to which they are applied

    Fengycin and the amyloid TasA of Bacillus subtilis stimulates the growth and immunization of plants by targeting the seed storages

    Beneficial microbes are known to stimulate the germination of the seeds; however, the exact mechanisms mediating these interactions are only beginning. Bacillus subtilis is a commonly detected member of the plant holobiont and provides multifaceted traits to the plant health. In this work, we demonstrated that B. subtilis triggered genetic and physiological responses in seeds that resulted in changes in the metabolic and developmental status of adult plants. A multidisciplinary approach based on microscopy, transcriptomics and metabolomics demonstrated that the chemically diverse extracellular matrix of Bacillus structurally cooperate in bacterial colonization of the seed storage tissues. The amyloid protein TasA and fengycin, two components of the extracellular matrix differentially stimulated levels of ROS inside seeds after imbibition and targeted the oil bodies of the seed endosperm, provoking specific changes in lipid metabolism or accumulation of glutathione-related molecules that resulted in two different plant growth programs: the development of seed radicles or major growth and immunization of adult plants.
