    Femtosecond laser fabrication of LIPSS-based waveplates on metallic surfaces

    A fast and reliable method for the fabrication of polarization modifying devices using femtosecond laser is reported. A setup based on line focusing is used for the generation of LIPSS on stainless steel, processing at different speeds between 0.8 and 2.4 mm/s with constant energy per pulse of 1.4 mJ. SEM and AFM characterizations of the LIPSS show a progressive increase in period as the processing speed increases, while height remains approximately constant in the studied range. Optical characterization of the devices shows an induced change in the polarization of the reflected beam that varies with the processing speed, which allows a controlled fabrication of these devices

    Developmental epileptic encephalopathy in <i>DLG4</i>-related synaptopathy

    Objective: The postsynaptic density protein of excitatory neurons PSD-95 is encoded by discs large MAGUK scaffold protein 4 (DLG4), de novo pathogenic variants of which lead to DLG4-related synaptopathy. The major clinical features are developmental delay, intellectual disability (ID), hypotonia, sleep disturbances, movement disorders, and epilepsy. Even though epilepsy is present in 50% of the individuals, it has not been investigated in detail. We describe here the phenotypic spectrum of epilepsy and associated comorbidities in patients with DLG4-related synaptopathy. Methods: We included 35 individuals with a DLG4 variant and epilepsy as part of a multicenter study. The DLG4 variants were detected by the referring laboratories. The degree of ID, hypotonia, developmental delay, and motor disturbances were evaluated by the referring clinician. Data on awake and sleep electroencephalography (EEG) and/or video-polygraphy and brain magnetic resonance imaging were collected. Antiseizure medication response was retrospectively assessed by the referring clinician. Results: A large variety of seizure types was reported, although focal seizures were the most common. Encephalopathy related to status epilepticus during slow-wave sleep (ESES)/developmental epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave activation during sleep (DEE-SWAS) was diagnosed in >25% of the individuals. All but one individual presented with neurodevelopmental delay. Regression in verbal and/or motor domains was observed in all individuals who suffered from ESES/DEE-SWAS, as well as some who did not. We could not identify a clear genotype-phenotype relationship even between individuals with the same DLG4 variants. Significance: Our study shows that a subgroup of individuals with DLG4-related synaptopathy have DEE, and approximately one fourth of them have ESES/DEE-SWAS. Our study confirms DEE as part of the DLG4-related phenotypic spectrum. Occurrence of ESES/DEE-SWAS in DLG4-related synaptopathy requires proper investigation with sleep EEG

    Searches for rare Bs0 and B0 decays into four muons are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. Direct decays and decays via light scalar and J/ψ resonances are considered. No evidence for the six decays searched for is found and upper limits at the 95% confidence level on their branching fractions ranging between 1.8 × 10−10 and 2.6 × 10−9 are set.     Observation of the B0→¯D*0K+π− and B0s→¯D*0K−π+ decays

    The first observations of B0→D¯∗(2007)0K+π- and Bs0→D¯∗(2007)0K-π+ decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D¯∗(2007)0π+π- decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γ from B+→DK+ and B0→DK+π- decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D¯∗(2007)0 mesons are fully reconstructed in the D¯0π0 and D¯0γ channels with the D¯0→K+π- decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays

    Measurement of the photon polarization in ΛbΛγ\Lambda_b \to \Lambda \gamma decays

    The photon polarization in bsγb \to s \gamma transitions is measured for the first time in radiative b-baryon decays exploiting the unique spin structure of ΛbΛγ\Lambda_b \to \Lambda \gamma decays. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb16\;fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13  TeV13\;TeV is used. The photon polarization is measured to be αγ=0.820.260.13+0.17+0.04\alpha_{\gamma}= 0.82^{\,+\,0.17\,+\,0.04}_{\,-\,0.26\,-\,0.13}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and previous measurements in b-meson decays.     First Observation of a Doubly Charged Tetraquark and Its Neutral Partner

    A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B0→D ̄D0s+π- and B+→D-Ds+π+, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020 GeV and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.013 GeV are observed, which decay to Ds+π+ and Ds+π- respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [cs ̄ud ̄], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [cs ̄ūd] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0+, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet

    Observation of a resonant structure near the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- threshold in the B+Ds+DsK+B^+\to D_s^+ D_s^- K^+ decay

    An amplitude analysis of the B+Ds+DsK+B^+\to D_s^+ D_s^- K^+ decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X(3960)X(3960), is observed in the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956±5±103956\pm5\pm10 MeV, 43±13±843\pm13\pm8 MeV and JPC=0++J^{PC}=0^{++}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of ccˉssˉc\bar{c}s\bar{s} quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0++0^{++} assignment or by a J/ψϕDs+DsJ/\psi \phi\leftrightarrow D_s^+ D_s^- coupled-channel effect.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-018.html (LHCb public pages

    Measurement of the mass difference and relative production rate of the Ωb\Omega^-_b and Ξb\Xi^-_b baryons

    The mass difference between the Ωb\Omega^-_b and Ξb\Xi^-_b baryons is measured using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb19 \, \text{fb}^{-1}, and is found to be \begin{equation} m(\Omega^-_b)- m(\Xi^-_b) = 248.54 \pm 0.51 \text{(stat)} \pm 0.38 \text{(syst)} \, \text{MeV}/c^2. \end{equation} The mass of the Ωb\Omega^-_b baryon is measured to be \begin{equation} m(\Omega^-_b)= 6045.9 \pm 0.5 \text{(stat)} \pm 0.6 \text{(syst)} \, \text{MeV}/c^2. \end{equation} This is the most precise determination of the Ωb\Omega^-_b mass to date. In addition, the production rate of Ωb\Omega^-_b baryons relative to that of Ξb\Xi^-_b baryons is measured for the first time in pppp collisions, using an LHCb dataset collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV13 \, \text{TeV} and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6fb16\,\text{fb}^{-1}. Reconstructing beauty baryons in the kinematic region 2<η<62 < \eta < 6 and pT<20GeV/cp_T < 20\,\text{GeV}/c with their decays to a J/ψJ/\psi meson and a hyperon, the ratio \begin{equation} \frac{f_{\Omega^-_b}}{f_{\Xi^-_b}}\times\frac{\mathcal{B}(\Omega^-_b \to J/\psi \Omega^-)}{\mathcal{B}(\Xi^-_b \to J/\psi \Xi^-)} = 0.120 \pm 0.008 \text{(stat)} \pm 0.008 \text{(syst)}, \end{equation} is obtained, where fΩbf_{\Omega^-_b} and fΞbf_{\Xi^-_b} are the fragmentation fractions of bb quarks into Ωb\Omega^-_b and Ξb\Xi^-_b baryons, respectively, and B\mathcal{B} represents the branching fractions of their respective decays.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures.
