Physicochemical, microbiological and antimicrobial properties of commercial honeys from Portugal

    Get PDF
The present study aimed to characterize five commercial honeys available in the Portuguese market in respect to their floral origins, physicochemical parameters and microbial safety and commercial quality assessment. Pollen profile, colour, moisture content, ash, acidity, electrical conductivity, pH, reducing sugars, apparent sucrose and HMF were the parameters analysed in each honey sample. Aerobic mesophiles, moulds and yeasts, fecal coliforms and sulphite-reducing clostridia were the microbial contaminants of interest studied. The antimicrobial effect against four fermentative yeasts was determined. Concerning the physicochemical parameters, all honey samples were found to meet European Legislation (EC Directive 2001/110) for all parameters, except for HMF and apparent sucrose. Microbiologically, the commercial quality was considered good and all samples showed to be negative in respect to safety parameters. We also verified that the presence of honey differentially affected the growth of fermentative yeasts under study, depending on the type of yeast, but this growth was not significantly influenced by the type of honey used

    Get PDF
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe Interurban Land Passenger Transportation is characterized by the displacement of people by road, between two cities and / or urban areas. Because of its high expressiveness at the passenger transport in Brazil, and a concern about the appropriateness and quality of service, this work sought to develop a System of Operational Performance Evaluation of the service providers. It is important that this assessment is geared to results concerning the provision of an adequate service and keep it as a constant. The assessment may result in penalties or incentives to operators, inducing them to improve its´ service. This method is able to assist regulators and managers in monitoring and control of the Interurban Land Passenger Transport, being it intercity or interstate

AbstractThis article presents a clipping of the collective research that aims to understand the constitutive characteristics of professionality and teacher identity from autobiographical narratives, using letters as an instrument for obtaining information. Are presented the reflections that emerged in the analysis exercise about the motivations for choosing teaching as the first choice of professional occupation. The narrative taken as a reference, shows the concrete conditions of existence shaping the professional path to be taken; on the other hand, it also brings elements to think that the intricacies of identification with teaching do not unfold only in the formal learning space for professional practice. Keywords: Formation stories; Identification with teaching; Teaching profession.

Non-Deterministic Computational Thinking: Challenges and Opportunities

    Get PDF
An educational paradigm that has improved problem-solving capacity is computational thinking, which uses characteristics such as decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking. However, most of the resources developed under this paradigm are deterministic. However, the current world is not linear. Non-deterministic dynamics play a vital role in today\u27s world. Decisions about the same fact can cause different events, and students must be prepared to live with such uncertainties. This article discusses challenges and possibilities in the development of non-deterministic computational thinking resources. This work shows a large field of research yet to be worked on, with new possibilities and a great potential to connect new resources with the students\u27 daily lives

Effects of a 10 km race on physiological and immunological responses

    Get PDF
Introduction: The number of 10 km running races has been increasing in Brazil and the number of finishers almost triplicated in the last decade. However, there is limited amount of data showing the relationship between this event and the immune system response. Aim: Investigate the effects of a 10 km running race on physiological and immunological response in healthy well trained male volunteers. Methods: Fourteen male participants (32,21 ± 10,24 years old, 78,80 ± 9,30 kg) took part in this study. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), visual analog scale (VAS), heart rate (HR) and blood samples were taken before, immediately and 24 hours after the race. Lactate, glucose, creatine kinase (CK) and C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as leukocyte number and subpopulation of T cell (CD4+ and CD8+) were analyzed. Results: Participants completed this race in 49,85 ± 7,04 min. There was a significant increase post-race compared to pre-race for HR (67 ± 9 to 159 ± 21 bpm), RPE (6 ± 0 to 15 ± 2) and lactate (3.6 to 6.6 mmol/dL). Glucose levels did not present any significant changes. CK level did not change immediately after the race, but was higher (131,21 ± 62,50 to 286,85 ± 234,35 U/L ) at the 24 h post-race time point. CRP was lower at 24 h (8,37 ± 2,23 to 4,50 ± 2,28 mg/dL). VAS values changed from 0 (before) to 5,64 ± 2,20 (immediately after) to 2,21 ± 2,86 (24 hours). The number of circulating leukocyte (5,83 ± 0,89 to 9,15 ± 1,77 103/µL), neutrophil (2,96 ± 0,49 to 4,34 ± 0,73 103/µL), lymphocyte (2,21 ± 0,57 to 3,92 ± 1,27 103/µL), monocyte (0,46 ± 0,10 to 0,64 ± 0,23 103/µL) and basophil (0,05 ± 0,02 to 0,09 ± 0,03 103/µL) increased significantly immediately after the race, returning to the basal level in 24 h. There was no difference in circulating eosinophils number. The absolute number of CD4+ (828,5 ± 215,8 to 1063,2 ± 235,3 cell/µL) and CD8+ (766,92 ± 347,79 to 1470,30 ± 782,90 cell/µL) also increased immediately after the race returning to basal in 24 h. Significant reduction of the CD4+/CD8+ lymphocyte subpopulation ratio (1,21 ± 0,45 to 0,85 ± 0,33 cell/µL) was observed post-race returning to basal level at 24 h post-race. Results are presented as mean ± SD. (p\u3c0,0001). Conclusion: These results suggest that a 10 km running race is an intense physical activity and induces physiological changes. In addition, intense running provokes a significantly, although transient, modulation of the immune system, specifically of leukocyte sub-population

The objective of this work was to evaluate rates and methods of potassium application for plant cane (Saccharum spp.) grown in a dystrophic Typic Haplustox with a sandy loam texture in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experiment was carried out in the municipality of Aporé, in the state of Goiás, using the RB92579 sugarcane variety. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks, with three replicates, in a 5x3 factorial arrangement, with five potassium rates (0, 60, 110, 160, and 200 kg ha-1 K2O as potassium chloride) and three application methods (100% at the bottom of the planting furrow and covered with soil, 100% side-dressed on the sugarcane rows 60 days after planting, and 50% in the planting furrow and 50% side-dressed). The amount of potassium in the stalks in the control treatment was greater than that of the potassium stock extractable by Mehlich-1 in the 0–60 cm soil layer. Stalk and sugar yields increase linearly with potassium rates, approximately 20% with 200 kg ha-1 K2O compared with the control treatment (without potassium). Potassium content in stalks also increases with potassium rates. There is no significant effect of the potassium application methods on stalk and sugar yields and on cane quality variables.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar doses e métodos de aplicação de potássio em cana-planta (Saccharum spp.) cultivada em Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico de textura franco-arenosa, em Cerrado brasileiro.
