    Postconflict behaviour in brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella)

    Postconflict affiliation has been mostly studied in Old World primates, and we still lack comparative research to understand completely the functional value of reconciliation. Cebus species display great variability in social characteristics, thereby providing a great opportunity for comparative studies. We recorded 190 agonistic interactions and subsequent postconflict behaviour in a captive group of brown capuchin monkeys ( Cebus apella) . Only 26.8% of these conflicts were reconciled. Reconciliation was more likely to occur between opponents that supported each other more frequently and that spent more time together. Postconflict anxiety was mostly determined by conflict intensity, and none of the variables thought to measure relationship quality had a significant effect on postconflict stress

    Avaliaram-se comparativamente os efeitos de duas soluções contendo concentrações iguais de cloreto de sódio, cloreto de potássio e magnésio, porém, uma delas contendo cloreto de cálcio e dextrose (SEDex), e a outra propionato de cálcio (SEProp), sobre parâmetros clínicos, proteínas plasmáticas totais, densidade urinária, pH urinário e glicose na urina de equinos (dois machos castrados e duas fêmeas) submetidos à um delineamento crossover 4x2. Os animais foram desidratados experimentalmente com duas aplicações de furosemida na dose de 1mg kg-1, além de jejum hídrico-alimentar de 24 horas, anteriormente aos tratamentos com as soluções, as quais foram administradas por via enteral em fluxo contínuo através de sonda nasogástrica de pequeno diâmetro numa taxa de infusão de 15 mL kg-1 h-1. A desidratação induzida provocou desidratação discreta. As soluções ocasionaram expansão da volemia, diminuiu a densidade urinária e não alterou os parâmetros clínicos dos padrões de referência. Além disso, a SEProp ocasionou glicosúria

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     A farmacopsiquiatria dos antidepressivos: The pharmacopsychiatry of antidepressants

    Os fármacos antidepressivos compõem o manejo terapêutico da depressão e inúmeros outros transtornos de origem neuropsiquiátrica. Logo, a ocorrências destes distúrbios tornam viável a aplicação destes, ressaltando ser essencial individualizar o tratamento e compreender a respeito das diversas classes, mecanismo de ação, interação medicamentosa, indicação clinica, grupo de risco e a intoxicação por superdosagem. O seguinte artigo objetivou descrever a respeito das particularidades dos antidepressivos, de modo a compreender sobre seu efeito farmacopsiquiatríco. Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura fundamentada nas renomadas plataformas de artigos indexados a respeito do tema. Foram selecionados os estudos que apresentavam relevância clinica para a compreensão do artigo, descartando-se os demais que não respondiam ao objetivo proposto. Na literatura científica estão disponíveis muitas informações pertinentes ao tema, ressaltando a importância deste. Atualmente, se encontram em aplicabilidade diversas classes que são os Inibidores Seletivos da Recaptação de Serotonina (ISRSs), Antidepressivos Tricíclicos (ADTs), Tetracíclicos e os Inibidores da Monoamina Oxidase (IMAO). Cada um destes possui um mecanismo de ação diferente, mas basicamente estes interferem no impulso nervoso de neurotransmissores beneficiando o portador de distúrbios neurocognitivos. Destacando que mesmo com o efeito terapêutico retrógrado, estes já manifestam os efeitos adversos. Logo, é imprescindível analisar qual o tipo e a dose do fármaco para se conduzir o melhor prognóstico do paciente.&nbsp

    ATLANTIC-CAMTRAPS: a dataset of medium and large terrestrial mammal communities in the Atlantic Forest of South America

    Our understanding of mammal ecology has always been hindered by the difficulties of observing species in closed tropical forests. Camera trapping has become a major advance for monitoring terrestrial mammals in biodiversity rich ecosystems. Here we compiled one of the largest datasets of inventories of terrestrial mammal communities for the Neotropical region based on camera trapping studies. The dataset comprises 170 surveys of medium to large terrestrial mammals using camera traps conducted in 144 areas by 74 studies, covering six vegetation types of tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest of South America (Brazil and Argentina), and present data on species composition and richness. The complete dataset comprises 53,438 independent records of 83 species of mammals, includes 10 species of marsupials, 15 rodents, 20 carnivores, eight ungulates and six armadillos. Species richness averaged 13 species (±6.07 SD) per site. Only six species occurred in more than 50% of the sites: the domestic dog Canis familiaris, crab-eating fox Cerdocyon thous, tayra Eira barbara, south American coati Nasua nasua, crab-eating raccoon Procyon cancrivorus and the nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus. The information contained in this dataset can be used to understand macroecological patterns of biodiversity, community, and population structure, but also to evaluate the ecological consequences of fragmentation, defaunation, and trophic interactions. © 2017 by the Ecological Society of Americ

    O perfil semiológico do paciente portador de hemorragia digestiva alta

    OBJETIVO: O seguinte estudo objetivou descrever a semiologia do paciente portador de hemorragia digestiva alta, considerando como determinante na avaliação de potencias focos hemorrágicos. METODOLOGIA: Foram realizadas buscas nas plataformas do SciELO, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus e Google Scholar,utilizando os descritores gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcerous disease e varicose hemorrhage, sendo identificados 35 estudos, dos quais foram incluídos 13 artigos completos. Desses estudos, 5 avaliaram as principais etiologias, 2 o surgimento de novos testes diagnósticos, 2 analisaram os aspectos epidemiológicos e 1 a sintomatologia apresentada pelo acometimento da hemorragia digestiva alta. Observou-se inicialmente a abundâncias de informações conceituais sobre o sangramento, como um transtorno clínico comum, acompanhada de inúmeras manifestações, considerando que o foco hemorrágico pode ocorrer em qualquer porção do trato gastrointestinal. Neste estudo, todas as publicações eleitas apresentaram o quadro semiológico composto por algia abdominal, indícios de choque hipovolêmico e taquicardia, alguns exibiram quedas abruptas da pressão arterial, odinofagia, êmese, náuseas e estado ictérico. Os pacientes implicados, cronicamente, já manifestaram ocorrências prévias, devido ao caráter recidivante torna-se essencial investigar a existência de varizes, fístula aorto-entérica, angiodisplasia e doença ulcerosa. CONCLUSÃO: Elucida-se que a hemorragia digestiva alta representa a principal causa de sangramento do trato gastrointestinal, majoritamente manifesta-se como hematêmese ou melena e cursam com o quadro sintomatológico que auxilia na avaliação da gravidade deste e o embasamento de potenciais focos de sangramento e que contribuam para disseminação de informações e intervenções futuras

    ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest.
