The donor star radial velocity curve in the cataclysmic variable GY Cnc confirms white dwarf eclipse modelling mass
A large number of white dwarf and donor masses in cataclysmic variables have
been found via modelling the primary eclipse, a method that relies on untested
assumptions. Recent measurements of the mass of the white dwarf in the
cataclysmic variable GY Cnc, obtained via modelling its ultraviolet spectrum,
conflict with the mass obtained via modelling the eclipse light curve. Here we
measure the radial velocity of the absorption lines from the donor star in GY
Cnc to be kms, in excellent agreement with the
prediction based on the masses derived from modelling the eclipse light curve.
It is possible that the white dwarf mass derived from the ultraviolet spectrum
of GY Cnc is affected by the difficulty of disentangling the white dwarf

Discovery of a Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable in the Kepler Mission Field
We announce the identification of a new cataclysmic variable star in the
field of the Kepler Mission, KIC J192410.81+445934.9. This system was
identified during a search for compact pulsators in the Kepler field.
High-speed photometry reveals coherent large-amplitude variability with a
period of 2.94 h. Rapid, large-amplitude quasi-periodic variations are also
detected on time scales of ~1200 s and ~650 s. Time-resolved spectroscopy
covering one half photometric period shows shallow, broad Balmer and He I
absorption lines with bright emission cores as well as strong He II and Bowen
blend emission. Radial velocity variations are also observed in the Balmer and
He I emission lines that are consistent with the photometric period. We
therefore conclude that KIC J192410.81+445934.9 is a nova-like variable of the
UX UMa class in or near the period gap, and it may belong to the rapidly
growing subclass of SW Sex systems. Based on 2MASS photometry and companion
star models, we place a lower limit on the distance to the system of ~500 pc.
Due to limitations of our discovery data, additional observations including
spectroscopy and polarimetry are needed to confirm the nature of this object.
Such data will help to further understanding of the behavior of nova-like
variables in the critical period range of 3-4 h, where standard cataclysmic
variable evolutionary theory finds major problems. The presence of this system
in the Kepler mission field-of-view also presents a unique opportunity to
obtain a continuous photometric data stream of unparalleled length and

Evidence of magnetic accretion in an SW Sex star: discovery of variable circular polarization in LS Pegasi
We report on the discovery of variable circular polarization in the SW Sex
star LS Pegasi. The observed modulation has an amplitude of ~0.3 % and a period
of 29.6 minutes, which we assume as the spin period of the magnetic white
dwarf. We also detected periodic flaring in the blue wing of Hbeta, with a
period of 33.5 minutes. The difference between both frequencies is just the
orbital frequency, so we relate the 33.5-min modulation to the beat between the
orbital and spin period. We propose a new accretion scenario in SW Sex stars,
based on the shock of the disk-overflown gas stream against the white dwarf's
magnetosphere, which extends to the corotation radius. From this geometry, we
estimate a magnetic field strength of B(1) ~ 5-15 MG. Our results indicate that
magnetic accretion plays an important role in SW Sex stars and we suggest that
these systems are probably Intermediate Polars with the highest mass accretion

HS 2325+8205 - an ideal laboratory for accretion disk physics
We identify HS 2325+8205 as an eclipsing, frequently outbursting dwarf nova
with an orbital period of 279.841731(5) min. Spectroscopic observations are
used to derive the radial velocity curve of the secondary star from absorption
features and also from the H-alpha emission lines, originating from the
accretion disc, yielding K_secondary = K_abs = 237 +- 28 km/s and K_emn = 145
+- 9 km/s respectively. The distance to the system is calculated to be 400
(+200, -140) pc. A photometric monitoring campaign reveals an outburst
recurrence time of 12-14 d, The combination of magnitude range (17-14 mag),
high declination, eclipsing nature and frequency of outbursts makes HS
2325+8205 the ideal system for "real-time" studies of the accretion disc

Dynamical masses of a nova-like variable on the edge of the period gap
We present the first dynamical determination of the binary parameters of an eclipsing SW Sextantis star in the 3â4âh orbital period range during a low state. We obtained time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of HS 0220+0603 during its 2004â2005 low-brightness state, as revealed in the combined Small & Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System, IAC80 and M1 Group long-term optical light curve. The optical spectra taken during primary eclipse reveal a secondary star spectral type of M5.5 ± 0.5 as derived from molecular band-head indices. The spectra also provide the first detection of a DAB white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable. By modelling its optical spectrum we estimate a white dwarf temperature of 30â000 ± 5000âK. By combining the results of modelling the white dwarf eclipse from ULTRACAM light curves with those obtained by simultaneously fitting the emission- and absorption-line radial velocity curves and I-band ellipsoidal light curves, we measure the stellar masses to be M1 = 0.87 ± 0.09 Mâ and M2 = 0.47 ± 0.05 Mâ for the white dwarf and the M dwarf, respectively, and an inclination of the orbital plane of i â 79°. A radius of 0.0103 ± 0.0007 Râ is obtained for the white dwarf. The secondary star in HS 0220+0603 is likely too cool and undersized for its mass
An HI shell-like structure associated with nova V458 Vulpeculae?
We report the radio detection of a shell-like HI structure in proximity to,
and probably associated with, the nova V458 Vul. High spectral resolution
observation with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope has made it possible to
study the detailed kinematics of this broken and expanding shell. Unlike the
diffuse Galactic HI emission, this is a single velocity component emission with
significant clumping at ~ 0.5' scales. The observed narrow line width of ~ 5
km/s suggests that the shell consists of mostly cold gas. Assuming a distance
of 13 kpc to the system, as quoted in the literature, the estimated HI mass of
the nebula is about 25 M_sun. However, there are some indications that the
system is closer than 13 kpc. If there is a physical association of the HI
structure and the nova system, the asymmetric morphology and the off-centred
stellar system indicates past strong interaction of the mass loss in the
asymptotic giant branch phase with the surrounding interstellar medium. So far,
this is the second example, after GK Per, of a large HI structure associated

Dietary Fat Patterns and Outcomes in Acute Pancreatitis in Spain
Background/Objective: Evidence from basic and clinical studies suggests that unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) might be relevant mediators of the development of complications in acute pancreatitis (AP). Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze outcomes in patients with AP from regions in Spain with different patterns of dietary fat intake.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed with data from 1,655 patients with AP from a Spanish prospective cohort study and regional nutritional data from a Spanish cross-sectional study. Nutritional data considered in the study concern the total lipid consumption, detailing total saturated fatty acids, UFAs and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) consumption derived from regional data and not from the patient prospective cohort. Two multivariable analysis models were used: (1) a model with the Charlson comorbidity index, sex, alcoholic etiology, and recurrent AP; (2) a model that included these variables plus obesity.
Results: In multivariable analysis, patients from regions with high UFA intake had a significantly increased frequency of local complications, persistent organ failure (POF), mortality, and moderate-to-severe disease in the model without obesity and a higher frequency of POF in the model with obesity. Patients from regions with high MUFA intake had significantly more local complications and moderate-to-severe disease; this significance remained for moderate-to-severe disease when obesity was added to the model.
Conclusions: Differences in dietary fat patterns could be associated with different outcomes in AP, and dietary fat patterns may be a pre-morbid factor that determines the severity of AP. UFAs, and particulary MUFAs, may influence the pathogenesis of the severity of AP
Pseudo-single crystal electrochemistry on polycrystalline electrodes : visualizing activity at grains and grain boundaries on platinum for the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction
The influence of electrode surface structure on electrochemical reaction rates and mechanisms is a major theme in electrochemical research, especially as electrodes with inherent structural heterogeneities are used ubiquitously. Yet, probing local electrochemistry and surface structure at complex surfaces is challenging. In this paper, high spatial resolution scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) complemented with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is demonstrated as a means of performing âpseudo-single-crystalâ electrochemical measurements at individual grains of a polycrystalline platinum electrode, while also allowing grain boundaries to be probed. Using the Fe2+/3+ couple as an illustrative case, a strong correlation is found between local surface structure and electrochemical activity. Variations in electrochemical activity for individual high index grains, visualized in a weakly adsorbing perchlorate medium, show that there is higher activity on grains with a significant (101) orientation contribution, compared to those with (001) and (111) contribution, consistent with findings on single-crystal electrodes. Interestingly, for Fe2+ oxidation in a sulfate medium a different pattern of activity emerges. Here, SECCM reveals only minor variations in activity between individual grains, again consistent with single-crystal studies, with a greatly enhanced activity at grain boundaries. This suggests that these sites may contribute significantly to the overall electrochemical behavior measured on the macroscale
Discovery of an old nova shell surrounding the cataclysmic variable V1315 Aql
Following our tentative discovery of a faint shell around V1315 Aql reported in Sahman et al., we undertook deep Hα imaging and intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the shell. We find that the shell has its geometric centre located on V1315 Aql. The mass, spectral features, and density of the shell are consistent with other nova shells, rather than planetary nebulae or supernova remnants. The radial velocity of the shell is consistent with the systemic velocity of V1315 Aql. We believe this evidence strongly suggests that the shell originates from an earlier nova event. This is the first nova shell discovered around a nova-like and supports the theory of nova-induced cycles in mass transfer rates (hibernation theory) first proposed by Shara et al
