Cytochrome cM is probably a membrane protein similar to the C subunit of the bacterial nitric oxide reductase

Cytochrome cM was first described in 1994 and its sequence has been found in the genome of manifold cyanobacterial species ever since. Numerous studies have been carried out with the purpose of determining its function, but none of them has given place to conclusive results so far. Many of these studies are based on the assumption that cytochrome cM is a soluble protein located in the thylakoid lumen of cyanobacteria. In this work, we have reevaluated the sequence of cyto-chrome cM, with our results showing that its most probable 3D structure is strongly similar to that of the C subunit of the bacterial nitric oxide reductase. The potential presence of an α-helix tail, which could locate this protein in the thylakoid membrane, further supports this hypothesis, thus providing a new, unexpected role for this redox protein.Fundación Investigación Universidad de Sevilla FIUS0571000

Fagus sylvatica and Quercus pyrenaica: Two neighbors with few things in common

[EN] The Iberian Peninsula comprises one of the largest boundaries between Mediterranean and Eurosiberian vegetation, known as sub-Mediterranean zone. This ecotone hosts many unique plant species and communities and constitutes the low-latitude (warm) margin of numerous central European species which co-occur with Mediterranean vegetation. Two of the main species found in this region are the Eurosiberian European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and the Mediterranean Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.). It remains unclear how the different physiological and adaptive strategies of these two species reflect their niche partitioning within a sub-Mediterranean community and to what extent phenotypic variation (intraspecific variability) is driving niche partitioning across Eurosiberian and Mediterranean speciesS

Cada uno de los tres apartados se acompaña de propuestas didácticas que permiten implementar y llevar a la práctica con facilidad, las argumentaciones teóricasIn this article we present interdisciplinary educational proposals that young children teachers could apply in their educational practice to ensure that children internalize the notions of space and time. These proposals concern the natural and the social environments, which in this level of education are not considered independent areas but one complex field. Each proposal contains specific activities with a theoretical basis which justifies them. We start in the first part from the concept that for human beings the body is the first benchmark of perception. From the perception of the body scheme itself, we finally acknowledge representative space. Then, in the second part, we expand the field and introduce temporal notions, taking into account the perception that children have of changes that occur in their immediate environment, especially recurrent changes (routines during the day, seasonal changes, within the family...). Finally, in the third part, we elaborate on the discovery, correct perception and understanding by the child, of a wider space: the street, the neighborhood, the town or cit

Purpose: Of the different modalities of rowing, dragon boat training is the most analyzed in breast cancer (BC). However, other types of boats, such as the felucca, use different biomechanical techniques, which have not been studied in the scientific literature. Consequently, in this study, we sought to determine the benefits of felucca rowing on the physical, psychological, and emotional well-being of patients with BC and healthy persons. Methods: A pre- and post-intervention, single-arm study without a control group with a 4-month intervention was carried out in Spain in 2019. The study sample included six women with BC and 15 healthy women. The following questionnaires were administered before and after the intervention: Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH), Constant-Murley score (CMS), and the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D, rate your health today). Differences were determined before and after the intervention using the paired t test. Results: Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the results of all the questionnaires for the women with BC and for the healthy women: DASH (- 13.8 BC and - 6.7 healthy), CMS (+ 12.0 BC and 9.2 healthy), and EQ-5D (+ 8.5 BC and 10.5 healthy). Conclusion: Felucca rowing showed benefits in health and quality of life in both women with BC and healthy women. In future studies with controlled design, values regarding clinical relevance, such as effect sizes/confidence intervals, are needed to corroborate our results

Bizi garen mundua zaintzeko erronka dugu aurrean. Garapen jasangarrirako helburuak 2030 Agendan bildu dira, eta, 12. erronkari begira, "Kontsumo- eta ekoizpen-modalitate jasangarriak bermatzea", funtsezkoa da hondakinen kudeaketa lantzea. Altzairugintza-industria garrantzitsua da Euskal Herrian, ezinbestekoa ekonomiaren garapenerako. Horregatik, sektore horrek sortzen dituen hondakinei bizitza berri bat bilatzeko beharra dago. Hondakin nagusiak zepa beltzak dira eta eraikuntza-sektorean erabiltzen dira batik bat. Urte askotan, masa-hormigoietan agregakin bezala aztertu izan da zepa beltzaren portaera, eta oso emaitza onak lortu dira. Horregatik, lan honetan pauso bat aurrerago emango da, eta hormigoi armatuzko egiturak eraikitzeko aztertuko da zepa beltzaren erabilera. Laborategiko lan txikiak alde batera utzita, 600 l-ko bolumena egingo da, eraikuntza-prozedura arrunt batean edozein sendotasuneko zepa beltzez eginiko hormigoia nola fabrika daitekeen baieztatzeko. Lan honen erronka 4 m-ko hormigoi armatuzko habeak fabrikatzea da, makurduraren aurreko portaera aztertzeko. Erabiliko diren hormigoiak autotrinkotzaileak izango dira. Lortutako balio esperimentalak araudietan oinarritutako balio analitikoekin alderatu dira, eta emaitza onak lortu dira.; We are facing the challenge of preserving the world where we live. The sustainable development goals have been collected in agenda 2030. Taking into account the 12 goal “Assessing the modalities of sustainable consumption and production”, waste management is a process in which is mandatory to worked out. Iron and steel industry is an important industry in the Basque Country, necessary for the development of the economy. That 's why it 's important to look for a new life for the waste produced by this sector. For many years, the behavior of electric arc furnace slag has been studied as an aggregate in mass concrete. The results were very good. Therefore, a step further in this work will be taken, and the use of the electric arc furnace slag will be considered in the construction of reinforced concrete structures. Aside from small laboratory work, 600l mass will be made. To confirm how electric arc furnace slag concrete can be manufactured in a common construction procedure. The challenge with this work was to get self compacting concrete. On the other hand, 4m long reinforced concrete beams will be manufactured to analyze its bending behavior. The experimental values obtained have been compared to the analytical values, in accordance with the standards and the obtained results have been good

Mitochondria, which are directly involved in metabolic reprogramming, are used to design novel mitochondria-targeted anticancer agents. Despite being targeted by melatonin, the functional role of mitochondria in melatonin's oncostatic activity remains unclear. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of melatonin in mitochondrial metabolism and its functional consequences in head and neck cancer. We analyzed the effects of melatonin on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cell lines (Cal-27 and SCC-9), which were treated with 100, 500, and 1500 mu M of melatonin for 1, 3, and 5 days, and found a connection between a change of metabolism following melatonin treatment and its effects on mitochondria. Our results demonstrate that melatonin induces a shift to an aerobic mitochondrial metabolism that is associated with changes in mitochondrial morphology, function, fusion, and fission in HNSCC. We found that melatonin increases oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and inhibits glycolysis in HNSCC, resulting in increased ROS production, apoptosis, and mitophagy, and decreased cell proliferation. Our findings highlight new molecular pathways involved in melatonin's oncostatic activity, suggesting that it could act as an adjuvant agent in a potential therapy for cancer patients. We also found that high doses of melatonin, such as those used in this study for its cytotoxic impact on HNSCC cells, might lead to additional effects through melatonin receptors.

The central region of the Iberian Peninsula has specific climatic characteristics that have affected the vegetation evolution along the Quaternary period. The scarce available paleoclimatic information has shown that the vegetation evolution did not follow the valid patterns for other regions, not only those for Europe regions but also those for other regions into the Iberian Peninsula. We present in this work three palynological records from alluvial deposits of the river Tajo that correspond, by datation and/or correlation with other well-dated deposits, to the Middle Pleistocene. The vegetation during this period was open mediterranean formations made up of mainly evergreen Quercus, Olea, Juniperus and Cistaceae, indicating the existence of a dry mediterranean climate. The vegetation evolution along the Middle Pleistocene, reconstructed from the three palynological records, also shows the development of more humid or more arid pulses into a general trend of increasing aridity during the Middle Pleistocene
