Money, Credit and Default
This paper develops a quantitative model of unsecured debt, default, and money demand for heterogenous agents economies. The paper generates a theory of money demand for the case in which money is a dominate asset that is not needed to carry-out transactions. In this environment holding money helps the agents to smooth their consumption during those periods in which they are excluded from credit markets following a default in their debts. In the model the welfare of the individuals is affected by the inflation rate: high inflation rates preclude individuals of using money as an asset that helps them smooth their consumption profile but low inflation rates tend to make softer the punishment for default making it diffcult to sustain high levels of debt at equilibrium. This two opposite effects imply that in equilibrium the inflation rate that maximizes individuals welfare is positive but not too high.Default, Inflation, Money, Endogenous Borrowing Constraint
Language and meanings of human subjectivity in urban culture narratives: analyzing stickers used on cars
Based on conceptions about language, urban technologies and narratives consummated within everyday life interactions, we problematize the cultural practice of narration in the urban context. We present the analysis of the data gathered during a research developed in the city of Santa Maria, Brazil, involving the collection and analysis of images and conversations with car drivers, as well as readers of car stickers, popularly known as “happy family” stickers. Among other findings, we observed that “happy family” stickers, strategically applied on the bumpers of cars, instigate several enlightening meaning processes of individual and collective forms of self and hetero identitarian narrative in the urban context
Defenda o SUS!
The use of games and playful tools in the classroom is a reality already much
discussed and used. However, this scenario is now requiring more creativity and willingness
of teachers and availability of schools, uniting to technological advances that have accrued on
the need to analyse the contribution of information technology as a pedagogical resource and
a playful instrument in shaping the teaching learning process. That being the object of study
this at work. That has as its guiding research question: does the child can build knowledge
through educational Informatics, as a playful tool? To answer the question was adopted the
procedure of bibliographical research of books, theses and scholarly articles with the support
of reliable search sites. What relevant contributions as pointed Valente (1999), that "the
computer in the knowledge society" exposes the educational Informatics with a critical piece
on learning. In addition to this, through bibliographical research were selected important
contributions de Moraes (1998) and authors Moran, Masetto and Behrens (2009), with the
book "New technological and pedagogic mediation", addressing issues associated with the
proposed integration and use of computer and the internet in the classroom. I.e. showing
convergent to the role of educator discussions under a new dimension, that of information
technology. The data obtained were organized into chapters, previously defined from the
objectives proposed, as a result the informatics as a playful tool in the construction of
Genome-wide variation in the Angolan Namib Desert reveals unique pre-Bantu ancestry.
Ancient DNA studies reveal the genetic structure of Africa before the expansion of Bantu-speaking agriculturalists; however, the impact of now extinct hunter-gatherer and herder societies on the genetic makeup of present-day African groups remains elusive. Here, we uncover the genetic legacy of pre-Bantu populations from the Angolan Namib Desert, where we located small-scale groups associated with enigmatic forager traditions, as well as the last speakers of the Khoe-Kwadi family's Kwadi branch. By applying an ancestry decomposition approach to genome-wide data from these and other African populations, we reconstructed the fine-scale histories of contact emerging from the migration of Khoe-Kwadi-speaking pastoralists and identified a deeply divergent ancestry, which is exclusively shared between groups from the Angolan Namib and adjacent areas of Namibia. The unique genetic heritage of the Namib peoples shows how modern DNA research targeting understudied regions of high ethnolinguistic diversity can complement ancient DNA studies in probing the deep genetic structure of the African continent
Optimal monetary policy and default
In a context in which individuals might default on their debts and subsequently be excluded from credit markets, holding money helps agents smooth their consumption during periods in which they cannot borrow. Therefore holding money makes the punishment to default less severe. In this context, by affecting money demand, monetary policy can affect incentives to default; determining optimal monetary policy can then be thought of as equivalent to choosing the optimal default rate. Since each economy might have a different optimal default rate, each economy might have a different optimal monetary policy different from the Friedman rule. Specifically, we compare the US to Colombia, using a model with idiosyncratic labor income risk and fiat money. Given differences in enforcement of debt contracts, and differences in income variability and persistence, we find that high inflation is costlier for developing countries compared to developed countries
Studies approaching the temporal variation of fish community structure on coastal lagoons give us the opportunity to access its stability and persistence, besides of being important tools to monitor the quality of environment. However, few researches use a temporal approach to evaluate this kind of ecosystems. The present study aimed to compare the fish community structure of Caconde lagoon, north coast of RS, at two time periods (1992-1994 and 2009-2011). A Student’s t-test was used to compare the proportion of abundance and of biomass of each species between the two time periods. Additionally, we performed an ordination with the fish species compositions of the two periods. Five new species occurrences were registered for Caconde lagoon at the recent sample, three of which are allochthonous. Eight species found at the original sample were not found at the recent one. Results of t-test revealed significant differences on the abundances of four species as well as a temporal partition between the two temporal samples. Besides the presence of allochthonous species, we found differences in the stability of the community characterized by decreasing relative abundances of original dominant species. Notwithstanding the inability to clearly explain the causes of the observed changes, we infer they can be partly explained by the presence of allochthonous species as well as by land-use changes at lagoon surroundings.

Recent times have been marked by fast technological changes that struck different sectors of
society and to which schools and teachers cannot be indifferent to. Consequently, we witnessed
the proliferation of a new generation of free software and the development of research teams that
shows us that the use of these applications, called Web 2.0 generation, can help creating learning
environments that are far more interactive and creative, thus promoting the development of a
diversity of different curricular skills in different subjects and levels of education.
It is within this context that the Noteflight software, developed in Boston, appears to music, being
its main purpose that of creating and sharing musical compositions. This innovative publisher of
musical papers is available online and lets you create a very versatile virtual environment, allowing
real-time compositions with the appropriate tools for the different demands of editing, this
happening without the need for synthesizers or any other programs.
The research reported in this essay intended to verify if and how to use the software Noteflight
within Music classes, in transcription, composition and improvisation activities and contributed to
the development of essential skills of students of the 5th and 6th grade in Music classes. In
methodological terms this empirical study took the form of a combined study case in which were
used, for the gathering and triangulation of data, observation techniques (diaries and structured
observation grids), questionnaire surveys and group interviews (focus group) as well as the
evaluation of the artifacts created by the students.
The results show that the work developed with the software Noteflight was an unusual, unique and
more motivating moment of learning, which potentiated the awareness and commitment of the
students, thus enabling the acquisition and understanding of different concepts of the syllabus. It
was also possible to perceive that the realization of group work, both in the classroom and online,
enabled the knowledge exchange, the sharing of ideas, the increasing of interaction between
students, the self-assurance and the ability to manage conflicts, hence favouring the development
of social and technological skills, essential for musical creativity and for the globalized world in
which we live in
MilkQA: a Dataset of Consumer Questions for the Task of Answer Selection
We introduce MilkQA, a question answering dataset from the dairy domain
dedicated to the study of consumer questions. The dataset contains 2,657 pairs
of questions and answers, written in the Portuguese language and originally
collected by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). All
questions were motivated by real situations and written by thousands of authors
with very different backgrounds and levels of literacy, while answers were
elaborated by specialists from Embrapa's customer service. Our dataset was
filtered and anonymized by three human annotators. Consumer questions are a
challenging kind of question that is usually employed as a form of seeking
information. Although several question answering datasets are available, most
of such resources are not suitable for research on answer selection models for
consumer questions. We aim to fill this gap by making MilkQA publicly
available. We study the behavior of four answer selection models on MilkQA: two
baseline models and two convolutional neural network archictetures. Our results
show that MilkQA poses real challenges to computational models, particularly
due to linguistic characteristics of its questions and to their unusually
longer lengths. Only one of the experimented models gives reasonable results,
at the cost of high computational requirements.Comment: 6 page
