    Improvement Rates in Aerobic and Anaerobic Training

    The purpose of this research study was to determine the difference in improvement rates between anaerobic and aerobic training. Over two, four week periods VO2max test and Wingate test were administered on 11 untrained students from a Northwest College. The hypothesis was anaerobic training would facilitate greater improvement rates in both VO2max accessed through use of metabolic cart and anaerobic performance assessed through use of a Wingate test. Depending on what systems an individual wants to improve in performance they should specifically stress the desired system. Overall participants who trained aerobically had a 13.01% average improvement (p=0.275) in the VO2max test compared to 8.18% average improvement (p=0.579) in the Wingate test. Participants who trained anaerobically had a 3.77% average improvement in VO2max (p=0.744) and also a 6.39% improvement (p=0.667) anaerobic performance. In conclusion, the statistical hypothesis was rejected because anaerobic training did not produce the most beneficial results due to training. The anaerobic training only had improvement in the Wingate test while the aerobic training had the biggest effect on the VO2max test. Results from this study indicate that individuals can improve at a faster rate in both aerobic and anaerobic capacity with aerobic training

    An Embarrassment of Riches or a Profusion of Confusion An Evaluation of the Continued Existence of the Civil Union Act of 2006 in the Light of Prospective Domestic Partnerships Legislation in South Africa

    As it stands, South African family law currently holds that the Marriage Act 25 of 1961 applies exclusively to the solemnisation of heterosexual civil marriages while same-sex couples have no choice but to formalise their relationships in terms of the Civil Union Act 17 of 2006.  In addition, the legal position is complicated by the fact that the latter Act not only allows both heterosexual and homosexual couples to conclude a civil union, but also provides that a civil union may take the form of either a marriage or a civil partnership, both of which enjoy the same legal recognition as, and give rise to the same legal consequences, as a civil marriage under the Marriage Act. In January 2008, a draft Domestic Partnerships Bill saw the light of day, the potential enactment of which casts significant doubt as to whether the prevailing framework should be retained.  With this potential development in mind, this paper considers the desirability of maintaining the "separate but equal" status quo by: (a) comparing the South African Law Reform Commission's pre-Civil Union Act proposals with the approach eventually adopted by the legislature; (b) comparing and contrasting the post-Civil Union Act position in South Africa with that of an established and well-ordered jurisdiction such as the Netherlands and, in the light hereof, considering the cases for and against repealing the Civil Union Act; and (c) by considering the desirability and practicality of the civil partnership's potential co-existence with the Domestic Partnerships Bill (as modified in accordance with a recent study).  A proposal is made that could provide a less complex and better streamlined family law dispensation in South Africa.

    Correction of corneal astigmatism is a key element of cataract surgery, since post-surgical residual astigmatism can compromise the patient's uncorrected visual acuity. Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) compensate for corneal astigmatism at the time of surgery, correcting ocular astigmatism. They are a predictable treatment. However, accurate measurement of corneal astigmatism is mandatory for choosing the correct toric IOL power and for planning optimal alignment. When calculating the power of toric IOLs, it is important to consider anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism, along with the surgically induced astigmatism. Accurate toric lens alignment along the calculated meridian is also crucial to achieve effective astigmatism correction.     Dynamic Prediction of Survival in Cystic Fibrosis: A Landmarking Analysis Using UK Patient Registry Data.

    BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited, chronic, progressive condition affecting around 10,000 individuals in the United Kingdom and over 70,000 worldwide. Survival in CF has improved considerably over recent decades, and it is important to provide up-to-date information on patient prognosis. METHODS: The UK Cystic Fibrosis Registry is a secure centralized database, which collects annual data on almost all CF patients in the United Kingdom. Data from 43,592 annual records from 2005 to 2015 on 6181 individuals were used to develop a dynamic survival prediction model that provides personalized estimates of survival probabilities given a patient's current health status using 16 predictors. We developed the model using the landmarking approach, giving predicted survival curves up to 10 years from 18 to 50 years of age. We compared several models using cross-validation. RESULTS: The final model has good discrimination (C-indexes: 0.873, 0.843, and 0.804 for 2-, 5-, and 10-year survival prediction) and low prediction error (Brier scores: 0.036, 0.076, and 0.133). It identifies individuals at low and high risk of short- and long-term mortality based on their current status. For patients 20 years of age during 2013-2015, for example, over 80% had a greater than 95% probability of 2-year survival and 40% were predicted to survive 10 years or more. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic personalized prediction models can guide treatment decisions and provide personalized information for patients. Our application illustrates the utility of the landmarking approach for making the best use of longitudinal and survival data and shows how models can be defined and compared in terms of predictive performance.US NIH Grant K25 HL12595

    Code-to-code verification of an axisymmetric model of the Bridgman solidification process for alloys.

    Purpose Numerical models of manufacturing processes are useful and provide insight for the practitioner; however, model verification and validation are a prerequisite for expedient application. This paper aims to detail the code-to-code verification of a thermal numerical model for the Bridgman solidification process of alloys in a two-dimensional axisymmetric domain, against an established commercial code (ANSYS Fluent); the work is considered a confidence building step in model development. Design/methodology/approach A grid sensitivity analysis is carried out to establish grid independence, and this is followed by simulations of two transient solidification scenarios: pulling rate step change and ramp input; the results of which are compared and discussed. Findings Good conformity of results is achieved; hence, the non-commercial model is code-to-code verified; in addition, the ability of the non-commercial model to deal with radial heat flow is demonstrated. Originality/value The ability of the home made model for Bridgman furnace solidification to deal with cases where significant radial heat transfer occurs in the sample was demonstrated. The introduction of front tracking to model the macroscopic growth of dendritic mush and the region of undercooled liquid is identified as the next step in model development. </jats:sec

    A survey of self-awareness and its application in computing systems

    Novel computing systems are increasingly being composed of large numbers of heterogeneous components, each with potentially different goals or local perspectives, and connected in networks which change over time. Management of such systems quickly becomes infeasible for humans. As such, future computing systems should be able to achieve advanced levels of autonomous behaviour. In this context, the system's ability to be self-aware and be able to self-express becomes important. This paper surveys definitions and current understanding of self-awareness and self-expression in biology and cognitive science. Subsequently, previous efforts to apply these concepts to computing systems are described. This has enabled the development of novel working definitions for self-awareness and self-expression within the context of computing systems

    Animal-Computer Interaction: the emergence of a discipline

    In this editorial to the IJHCS Special Issue on Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI), we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in this emerging field, outlining the main scientific interests of its developing community, in a broader cultural context of evolving human-animal relations. We summarise the core aims proposed for the development of ACI as a discipline, discussing the challenges these pose and how ACI researchers are trying to address them. We then introduce the contributions to the Special Issue, showing how they illustrate some of the key issues that characterise the current state-of-the-art in ACI, and finally reflect on how the journey ahead towards developing an ACI discipline could be undertaken
