Automatic structures for semigroup constructions
We survey results concerning automatic structures for semigroup
constructions, providing references and describing the corresponding automatic
structures. The constructions we consider are: free products, direct products,
Rees matrix semigroups, Bruck-Reilly extensions and wreath products.Comment: 22 page
Kernel Bounds for Structural Parameterizations of Pathwidth
Assuming the AND-distillation conjecture, the Pathwidth problem of
determining whether a given graph G has pathwidth at most k admits no
polynomial kernelization with respect to k. The present work studies the
existence of polynomial kernels for Pathwidth with respect to other,
structural, parameters. Our main result is that, unless NP is in coNP/poly,
Pathwidth admits no polynomial kernelization even when parameterized by the
vertex deletion distance to a clique, by giving a cross-composition from
Cutwidth. The cross-composition works also for Treewidth, improving over
previous lower bounds by the present authors. For Pathwidth, our result rules
out polynomial kernels with respect to the distance to various classes of
polynomial-time solvable inputs, like interval or cluster graphs. This leads to
the question whether there are nontrivial structural parameters for which
Pathwidth does admit a polynomial kernelization. To answer this, we give a
collection of graph reduction rules that are safe for Pathwidth. We analyze the
success of these results and obtain polynomial kernelizations with respect to
the following parameters: the size of a vertex cover of the graph, the vertex
deletion distance to a graph where each connected component is a star, and the
vertex deletion distance to a graph where each connected component has at most

We are the Change that we Seek: Information Interactions During a Change of Viewpoint
There has been considerable hype about filter bubbles and echo chambers influencing the views of information consumers. The fear is that these technologies are undermining democracy by swaying opinion and creating an uninformed, polarised populace. The literature in this space is mostly techno-centric, addressing the impact of technology. In contrast, our work is the first research in the information interaction field to examine changing viewpoints from a human-centric perspective. It provides a new understanding of view change and how we might support informed, autonomous view change behaviour. We interviewed 18 participants about a self-identified change of view, and the information touchpoints they engaged with along the way. In this paper we present the information types and sources that informed changes of viewpoint, and the ways in which our participants interacted with that information. We describe our findings in the context of the techno-centric literature and suggest principles for designing digital information environments that support user autonomy and reflection in viewpoint formation
WMAP constraints on scalar-tensor cosmology and the variation of the gravitational constant
We present observational constraints on a scalar-tensor gravity theory by
test for CMB anisotropy spectrum. We compare the WMAP temperature
power spectrum with the harmonic attractor model, in which the scalar field has
its harmonic effective potential with curvature in the Einstein
conformal frame and the theory relaxes toward Einstein gravity with time. We
found that the present value of the scalar coupling, i.e. the present level of
deviation from Einstein gravity , is bounded to be smaller than
(), and () for . This constraint is much stronger than the bound from the solar
system experiments for large models, i.e., and 0.3 in
and limits, respectively. Furthermore, within the framework
of this model, the variation of the gravitational constant at the recombination

Male frequent attenders of general practice and their help seeking preferences
Background: Low rates of health service usage by men are commonly linked to masculine values and traditional male gender roles. However, not all men conform to these stereotypical notions of masculinity, with some men choosing to attend health services on a frequent basis, for a variety of different reasons. This study draws upon the accounts of male frequent attenders of the General Practitioner's (GP) surgery, examining their help-seeking preferences and their reasons for choosing services within general practice over other sources of support. Methods: The study extends thematic analysis of interview data from the Self Care in Primary Care study (SCinPC), a large scale multi-method evaluation study of a self care programme delivered to frequent attenders of general practice. Data were collected from 34 semi-structured interviews conducted with men prior to their exposure to the intervention. Results: The ages of interviewed men ranged from 16 to 72 years, and 91% of the sample (n= 31) stated that they had a current health condition. The thematic analysis exposed diverse perspectives within male help-seeking preferences and the decision-making behind men's choice of services. The study also draws attention to the large variation in men's knowledge of available health services, particularly alternatives to general practice. Furthermore, the data revealed some men's lack of confidence in existing alternatives to general practice. Conclusions: The study highlights the complex nature of male help-seeking preferences, and provides evidence that there should be no 'one size fits all' approach to male service provision. It also provides impetus for conducting further studies into this under researched area of interest. © 2011 WPMH GmbH
Drought shocks and gearing impacts on the profitability of sheep farming
The resilience and profitability of livestock production in many countries can be impacted by shocks, such as drought and market shifts, especially under high debt levels. For farmers to remain profitable through such uncertainty, there is a need to understand and predict a farming businessâs ability to withstand and recover from such shocks. This research demonstrates the use of biophysical modelling linked with copula and Monte Carlo simulation techniques to predict the risks faced by a typical wool and meat lamb enterprise in South-Eastern Australia, given the financial impacts of different debt levels on a farming businessâs profitability and growth in net wealth. The study tested five starting gearing scenarios, i.e., debt to equity (D:E) ratios to define a farmâs financial risk profiles, given weather and price variations over time. Farms with higher gearing are increasingly worse off, highlighting the implications of debt accumulating over time due to drought shocks. In addition to business risk, financial risk should be included in the analyses and planning of farm production to identify optimal management strategies better. The methods described in this paper enable the extension of production simulation to include the farmerâs management information to determine financial risk profiles and guide decision making for improved business resilience
Decomposition and nutrient release of leguminous plants in coffee agroforestry systems.
Leguminous plants used as green manure are an important nutrient source for coffee plantations, especially for soils with low nutrient levels. Field experiments were conducted in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais State, Brazil to evaluate the decomposition and nutrient release rates of four leguminous species used as green manures (Arachis pintoi, Calopogonium mucunoides, Stizolobium aterrimum and
Stylosanthes guianensis) in a coffee agroforestry system under two different climate conditions. The initial N contents in plant residues varied from 25.7 to 37.0 g kg-1 and P from 2.4 to 3.0 g kg-1. The lignin/N, lignin/polyphenol and(lignin+polyphenol)/N ratios were low in all residues studied. Mass loss rates were highest in the first 15 days, when 25 % of the residues were decomposed. From 15 to 30 days, the decomposition rate decreased on both farms. On the farm in Pedra Dourada (PD), the decomposition constant k increased in the order C. mucunoides < S. aterrimum < S. guianensis < A. pintoi. On the farm in Araponga (ARA), there was no difference in the decomposition rate among leguminous plants. The N release rates varied from 0.0036 to 0.0096 d-1. Around 32 % of the total N content in the plant material was released in the first 15 days. In ARA, the N concentration in the S. aterrimum residues was always significantly higher than in the other residues. At the end of 360 days, the N released was 78 % in ARA and 89 % in PD of the initial content. Phosphorus was the most rapidly released nutrient (k values from 0.0165 to 0.0394 d-1). Residue decomposition and nutrient release did not correlate with initial residue chemistry and biochemistry, but differences in climatic conditions between the two study sites modified the decomposition rate constants
Pulsar Timing and its Application for Navigation and Gravitational Wave Detection
Pulsars are natural cosmic clocks. On long timescales they rival the
precision of terrestrial atomic clocks. Using a technique called pulsar timing,
the exact measurement of pulse arrival times allows a number of applications,
ranging from testing theories of gravity to detecting gravitational waves. Also
an external reference system suitable for autonomous space navigation can be
defined by pulsars, using them as natural navigation beacons, not unlike the
use of GPS satellites for navigation on Earth. By comparing pulse arrival times
measured on-board a spacecraft with predicted pulse arrivals at a reference
location (e.g. the solar system barycenter), the spacecraft position can be
determined autonomously and with high accuracy everywhere in the solar system
and beyond. We describe the unique properties of pulsars that suggest that such
a navigation system will certainly have its application in future astronautics.
We also describe the on-going experiments to use the clock-like nature of
pulsars to "construct" a galactic-sized gravitational wave detector for
low-frequency (f_GW ~1E-9 - 1E-7 Hz) gravitational waves. We present the

On the verge of Umdeutung in Minnesota: Van Vleck and the correspondence principle (Part One)
In October 1924, the Physical Review, a relatively minor journal at the time,
published a remarkable two-part paper by John H. Van Vleck, working in virtual
isolation at the University of Minnesota. Van Vleck combined advanced
techniques of classical mechanics with Bohr's correspondence principle and
Einstein's quantum theory of radiation to find quantum analogues of classical
expressions for the emission, absorption, and dispersion of radiation. For
modern readers Van Vleck's paper is much easier to follow than the famous paper
by Kramers and Heisenberg on dispersion theory, which covers similar terrain
and is widely credited to have led directly to Heisenberg's "Umdeutung" paper.
This makes Van Vleck's paper extremely valuable for the reconstruction of the
genesis of matrix mechanics. It also makes it tempting to ask why Van Vleck did
not take the next step and develop matrix mechanics himself.Comment: 82 page
