The effects of vigabatrin of the visual system
This thesis considers the visual electrophysiological effects of vigabatrin (an anti-epileptic drug, which acts by increasing the levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA on the retina of the eye compared to the concentric visual field defects which have been found associated with the drug. Flash and pattern ERG's, EOG's multifocal ERG's (VERIS), flash and pattern VEP's and visual fields were tested. Although VEP's have been shown not to be affected by vigabatrin, these were recorded to complete the testing. Initially, of the eight vigabatrin patients with known visual field defects, 7 showed abnormally delayed 30Hz flicker a-wave latencies, 5 abnormally delayed 30Hz b-wave latencies and 6 abnormally low 30Hz amplitudes. Also 7 showed an abnormally prolonged latency of oscillatory potential 1 (OP1). The two patients taking vigabatrin at the time of testing showed low EOG Arden index values. The VERIS results correlated well with the severity of the visual field defects. Following this finding, eleven healthy subjects received vigabatrin over a 10-day period. No changes were seen in the visual fields, however, the photopic ERG b-wave latency significantly increased (although not to abnormal values). A matched pairs study with eleven vigabatrin, patients and eleven epileptic patients, who had never taken vigabatrin supported the findings of abnormal 30Hz flicker b-wave and OP latencies associated with vigabatrin, again with the VERIS results correlating to the severity of the visual field defect. The abnormal 30Hz flicker and VERIS responses indicate involvement of the cone photoreceptors and the OP's show an effect on the amacrine cells. The ERG increase in the photopic b-wave latency also suggests involvement of the bipolar cells, however, this effect and the reversible effect on the Arden index after cessation of the drug may be unrelated to the visual field defect. To conclude this thesis, a field specific VEP stimulus was developed to assess the retinal function in the peripheral field of paediatric patients. It comprises of a dartboard stimulus with a central 0-5 degree black and white chequered stimulus, a blank 5-30 degree annulus and a 30-60 degree peripheral chequered stimulus. When optimised on four vigabatrin patients it was found that no peripheral response can be evoked with a field loss exceeding 30-35 degrees. A grammatical description of Warao imperatives: Formal brevity and morphological complexity
Warao is a morphologically complex language isolate, spoken in Guyana and Venezuela. This paper focuses on the critically endangered Guyanese dialect. First-hand data are used to provide a descriptive analysis of Warao imperative constructions, identify their grammatical features and illocutionary forces, and clarify relevant distinctions concerning telicity. The Warao imperative mood is composed of canonical (2nd singular and 2nd plural) and non-canonical (1st person and 3rd person) imperatives, which are expressed by a set of person-specific verbal suffixes. Both canonical and non-canonical imperatives are negated by the same standard negator. These imperatives commonly express instructions, requests, invitations, warnings, prohibitions, and optatives. As compared to verb forms in other moods, Warao imperatives are syntactically and formally simple; however, the imperative suffixes attach to the morphologically complex Warao verb, thus adding complexity to the compositional meaning of the imperative. In addition to bearing numerous other affixes, the Warao imperatives are often marked as telic. The common marking of telicity in the imperative has led to the reassessment of previous analyses by Osborn (1959) and Romero-Figueroa (2003). The ways in which Warao imperatives adhere to and differ from cross-linguistic trends are also explored. Results of the First Coincident Observations by Two Laser-Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors
We report an upper bound on the strain amplitude of gravitational wave bursts
in a waveband from around 800Hz to 1.25kHz. In an effective coincident
observing period of 62 hours, the prototype laser interferometric gravitational
wave detectors of the University of Glasgow and Max Planck Institute for
Quantum Optics, have set a limit of 4.9E-16, averaging over wave polarizations
and incident directions. This is roughly a factor of 2 worse than the
theoretical best limit that the detectors could have set, the excess being due
to unmodelled non-Gaussian noise. The experiment has demonstrated the viability
of the kind of observations planned for the large-scale interferometers that

Design of InP membrane SOA with butt-joint active passive interface
A butt-joint SOA design for InP on Si membrane (IMOS) platform is proposed. The new design features the butt-joint interface between the SOA and passive nanophotonic waveguide, which makes the interface a factor of 2 to 6 shorter than in the current twin-guide SOAs, with possibility to reduce it further to factor of 5-10. This makes the new SOA a promising candidate for high-speed directly modulated lasers (DML) applications, where extremely short SOAs (40-100 μm long) and short distances between reflectors are usually required

The Influence of Free Quintessence on Gravitational Frequency Shift and Deflection of Light with 4D momentum
Based on the 4D momentum, the influence of quintessence on the gravitational
frequency shift and the deflection of light are examined in modified
Schwarzschild space. We find that the frequency of photon depends on the state
parameter of quintessence : the frequency increases for and
decreases for . Meanwhile, we adopt an integral power number
() to solve the orbital equation of photon. The photon's
potentials become higher with the decrease of . The behavior of
bending light depends on the state parameter sensitively. In
particular, for the case of , there is no influence on the
deflection of light by quintessence. Else, according to the H-masers of GP-A
redshift experiment and the long-baseline interferometry, the constraints on

Trematodes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia: emerging patterns of diversity and richness in coral reef fishes
The Great Barrier Reef holds the richest array of marine life found anywhere in Australia, including a diverse and fascinating parasite fauna. Members of one group, the trematodes, occur as sexually mature adult worms in almost all Great Barrier Reef bony fish species. Although the first reports of these parasites were made 100 years ago, the fauna has been studied systematically for only the last 25 years. When the fauna was last reviewed in 1994 there were 94 species known from the Great Barrier Reef and it was predicted that there might be 2,270 in total. There are now 326 species reported for the region, suggesting that we are in a much improved position to make an accurate prediction of true trematode richness. Here we review the current state of knowledge of the fauna and the ways in which our understanding of this fascinating group is changing. Our best estimate of the true richness is now a range, 1,100–1,800 species. However there remains considerable scope for even these figures to be incorrect given that fewer than one-third of the fish species of the region have been examined for trematodes. Our goal is a comprehensive characterisation of this fauna, and we outline what work needs to be done to achieve this and discuss whether this goal is practically achievable or philosophically justifiable
Integrative modeling identifies genetic ancestry-associated molecular correlates in human cancer
Cellular and molecular aberrations contribute to the disparity of human cancer incidence and etiology between ancestry groups. Multiomics profiling in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) allows for querying of the molecular underpinnings of ancestry-specific discrepancies in human cancer. Here, we provide a protocol for integrative associative analysis of ancestry with molecular correlates, including somatic mutations, DNA methylation, mRNA transcription, miRNA transcription, and pathway activity, using TCGA data.
