Managing Global Training Utilizing Distance Learning Technologies and Techniques: The United States Army Readiness Training
Distance learning (e-learning) is expanding at a very rapid pace as organizations throughout the world search for economical, responsive, and effective means to train workers to meet the challenges of the information age workplace. The Army Distance Learning Program (TADLP) model is discussed in the context of the global e-learning environment. Both e-learning infrastructure and management issues are identified, with emphasis on: (1) developing policy, (2) measuring performance, (3) managing resources, (4) maintaining standards, and (5) satisfying users. The TADLP program is challenging to manage effectively, and difficult to accurately assess program outcomes. The TADLP program is shown to have a well-executed infrastructure plan, quality management of both facilities and services by contractor-supplied staff, and well-designed classrooms. However, the program suffers from limited courseware, creating a bottleneck for full program utilization. A discussion follows relating the Army program to public and private e-learning programs and expectations.
Dungeness crab research program: Report for the Year 1976
All larval stages of the 1976 year class, with the exception of the 5th zoeal stage, were found in Gu1f waters January through March. The first post-larval stage was collected in San Pablo Bay in May. Fifty percent of 1976 year class crabs entered the Bay complex as compared to nearly 80% in 1975. The 1976 year class appears relatively weak. No electrophoretic polymorphism was found in Cancer magister to be of value in Dungeness crab population determinations.
Multi-variate correlations comparing crab landings with an
array of oceanographic parameters and the crab density dependent factor were computer-run for both northern and
central California. The most significant correlating factors at the time late stage larvae prevail were sea level and atmospheric pressure for central California and, for northern California, the density dependent factor and sea
surface temperature. Female crabs held at controlled temperatures indicated gonad maturation and spawning
may be induced by increased temperature. Analyses of crab
tissues revealed burdens of petroleum hydrocarbons, silver,
selenium, cadmium, and PCB's higher in central California
crabs, while DDE was found in higher amounts in northern
California crab tissue.
Thru-flow culture systems were developed which should yield about 163 megalopae of Dungeness crabs in 63 days from 1,200 laboratory hatched zoeae.(46pp.
On the role of stochastic Fermi acceleration in setting the dissipation scale of turbulence in the interstellar medium
We consider the dissipation by Fermi acceleration of magnetosonic turbulence
in the Reynolds Layer of the interstellar medium. The scale in the cascade at
which electron acceleration via stochastic Fermi acceleration (STFA) becomes
comparable to further cascade of the turbulence defines the inner scale. For
any magnetic turbulent spectra equal to or shallower than Goldreich-Sridhar
this turns out to be cm, which is much larger than the shortest
length scales observed in radio scintillation measurements. While STFA for such
spectra then contradict models of scintillation which appeal directly to an
extended, continuous turbulent cascade, such a separation of scales is
consistent with the recent work of \citet{Boldyrev2} and \citet{Boldyrev3}
suggesting that interstellar scintillation may result from the passage of radio
waves through the galactic distribution of thin ionized boundary surfaces of
HII regions, rather than density variations from cascading turbulence. The
presence of STFA dissipation also provides a mechanism for the non-ionizing
heat source observed in the Reynolds Layer of the interstellar medium
\citep{Reynolds}. STFA accommodates the proper heating power, and the input

The initial communication with the peer support service
Målet med oppgaven er å undersøke om den innledende kommunikasjonen mellom pasienter, helsepersonell og likepersoner i foreningen Momentum fungerer. Dermed vil den også peke på utfordringer i kommunikasjonen mellom partene som det bør arbeides med.
Vi har valgt å konsentrere oss om den kommunikasjonsprosessen som skjer i forhold til at pasienten skal få kontakt med en likeperson. Vi fokuserer på tilgjengelighet og bruk av kommunikasjonskanaler.
For å samle inn informasjon har vi basert oss på en kvantitativ undersøkelse av alle likepersoner i Momentum. Vi bruker også likepersonene som kilde som pasienter, siden pasienter på sykehus ikke er tilgjengelig for oss. I tillegg har vi gjennomført et kvalitativt epost intervju av tre personer som representerer helsepersonell. Hensikten med det kvalitative intervjuet er å hente inn mer informasjon og se på kommunikasjonen fra helsepersonellets side. Når vi setter informasjonen fra undersøkelsene sammen i analysen håper vi å få et mer nyansert og riktigere bilde av kommunikasjonsutfordringer for organisasjoneneSammendrag engelsk (abstract): The aim of the study is to investigate whether the initial communication between patients, health professionals and peer persons in society Momentum works. Thus, it will also identify challenges in the communication process, between the parties, that the organization can continue to solve in the future, as they develop.
We have chosen to focus on the communication process that takes place needed for the patient to connect to a peer person. We focus on the availability of the service and use of communication channels.
To collect the information we have based the study on a qualitative examination, of all peer persons in Momentum. We also use the peer persons as an information source as patients, since patients in the hospital, as a group are not available for us. In addition, we conducted a qualitative email interview of three people, as representatives for healthcare professionals. The purpose of the email interviews is to gather more information and see the communication in perspective of health professionals. When we combine the information from the examinations in the analysis, we hope to gain a more nuanced and accurate picture of the communication challenges for the organization
A shift in habitat use patterns of brown trout (Salmo trutta): A behavioural response to macrophyte removal
Mass development of macrophytes is an increasing problem worldwide and they are frequently removed where they are in conflict with local waterway users. Yet, macrophytes can provide important refuge and nursery habitats for fish. Little is known about the consequences of macrophyte removal for fish behavioural space use and habitat selection. We hypothesised that macrophyte removal would affect brown trout (Salmo trutta) movement during the partial removal of the aquatic plant Juncus bulbosus (L.) in an oligotrophic impounded Norwegian river.We tagged 94 brown trout and tracked them using passive acoustic telemetry for 10 months and mapped the cover of J. bulbosus. Trout behavioural patterns were quantified as space use (utilisation areas 50% and 95%) which was linked to habitat use and selection for J. bulbosus. Removal of J. bulbosus influenced space use of brown trout by reducing the core utilisation area by 22%. Habitat use and selection were likewise influenced by removal with increased use and selection of areas with low J. bulbosus cover (25–75%). Finally, diurnal differences in space use and habitat use were found, with 19% larger utilisation areas at night and higher use of areas with low J. bulbosus during daytime. Yet, all effect sizes were relatively small compared to the size of the study area. This research provides a detailed case study on the effects of macrophyte removal on fish behavioural patterns in a section of a large Norwegian river with macrophyte mass development. We found no large effects of removal on trout behaviour but noted an increased use of areas with low macrophyte cover. This research is relevant for water managers and policy makers of freshwater conservation and provides a template for using acoustic telemetry to study the effects of macrophyte removal on fish.publishedVersio
A framework for pathologies of message sequence charts

Copyright @ 2012 Elsevier B.V.Context - It is known that a Message Sequence Chart (MSC) specification can contain different types of pathology. However, definitions of different types of pathology and the problems caused by pathologies are unclear, let alone the relationships between them. In this circumstance, it can be problematic for software engineers to accurately predict the possible problems that may exist in implementations of MSC specifications and to trace back to the design problems in MSC specifications from the observed problems of an implementation. Objective - We focus on generating a clearer view on MSC pathologies and building formal relationships between pathologies and the problems that they may cause. Method - By concentrating on the problems caused by pathologies, a categorisation of problems that a distributed system may suffer is first introduced. We investigate the different types of problems and map them to categories of pathologies. Thus, existing concepts related to pathology are refined and necessary concepts in the pathology framework are identified. Finally, we formally prove the relationships between the concepts in the framework. Results - A pathology framework is established as desired based on a restriction that considers problematic scenarios with a single undesirable event. In this framework, we define disjoint categories of both pathologies and the problems caused; the identified types of pathology are successfully mapped to the problems that they may cause. Conclusion - The framework achieved in this paper introduces taxonomies into and clarifies relationships between concepts in research on MSC pathologies. The taxonomies and relationships in the framework can help software engineers to predict problems and verify MSC specifications. The single undesirable event restriction not only enables a categorisation of pathological scenarios, but also has the potential practical benefit that a software engineer can concentrate on key problematic scenarios. This may make it easier to either remove pathologies from an MSC specification MM or test an implementation developed from MM for potential problems resulting from such pathologies
Behavioural response of brown trout (Salmo trutta) to total dissolved gas supersaturation in a regulated river
Total dissolved gas supersaturation from dams and power stations is a chronic freshwater pollutant that is toxic to animals with aquatic respiration. Laboratory ecotoxicology experiments have revealed capacity for captive fishes to saturoregulate by moving deeper, but field ecotoxicology research is largely lacking. We instrumented 94 brown trout in the Rysstad basin of the Otra River, Norway, with depth sensor acoustic transmitters and monitored their movements for 10 months. We found that the depths used by the trout largely protected them from the effects of total dissolved gas supersaturation, which ranged from 96% to 133% total gas pressure during the study. The depth use of fish was affected by sun position, lunar phase and spatial position in the river (i.e., available depth), and there was an extremely weak effect of total dissolved gas supersaturation that was counterintuitive (i.e., positive slope, movement toward surface). Depth traces of the fish revealed that nine fish died during the study, mostly coinciding with the first wave of supersaturation, consistent with observations of untagged dead fish with signs of gas bubble trauma found on the river bottom during this period (May-June). Overall, tagged trout exposure to total dissolved gas supersaturation depended on their use of depth, but responses to waves of extreme supersaturation at supraphysiological levels were weak and biologically insignificant, with individual variation and spatial position in the river most important in the model. Exposure to total dissolved gas supersaturation was mediated by individual differences in habitat use, which may be linked to activity and other traits that determine overall vulnerability to exposure to total dissolved gas supersaturation.publishedVersio
