PACCE: Perl Algorithm to Compute Continuum and Equivalent Widths
We present Perl Algorithm to Compute continuum and Equivalent Widths (pacce).
We describe the methods used in the computations and the requirements for its
usage. We compare the measurements made with pacce and "manual" ones made using
iraf splot task. These tests show that for SSP models the equivalent widths
strengths are very similar (differences <0.2A) for both measurements. In real
stellar spectra, the correlation between both values is still very good, but
with differences of up to 0.5A. pacce is also able to determine mean continuum
and continuum at line center values, which are helpful in stellar population
studies. In addition, it is also able to compute the uncertainties in the
equivalent widths using photon statistics. The code is made available for the

On the topology of adiabatic passage
We examine the topology of eigenenergy surfaces characterizing the population
transfer processes based on adiabatic passage. We show that this topology is
the essential feature for the analysis of the population transfers and the
prediction of its final result. We reinterpret diverse known processes, such as
stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), frequency-chirped adiabatic
passage and Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP). Moreover, using this
picture, we display new related possibilities of transfer. In particular, we
show that we can selectively control the level which will be populated in
STIRAP process in Lambda or V systems by the choice of the peak amplitudes or
the pulse sequence
Adiabatic creation of entangled states by a bichromatic field designed from the topology of the dressed eigenenergies
Preparation of entangled pairs of coupled two-state systems driven by a
bichromatic external field is studied. We use a system of two coupled spin-1/2
that can be translated into a three-state ladder model whose intermediate state
represents the entangled state. We show that this entangled state can be
prepared in a robust way with appropriate fields. Their frequencies and
envelopes are derived from the topological properties of the model.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Counterintuitive transitions between crossing energy levels
We calculate analytically the probabilities for intuitive and
counterintuitive transitions in a three-state system, in which two parallel
energies are crossed by a third, tilted energy. The state with the tilted
energy is coupled to the other two states in a chainwise linkage pattern with
constant couplings of finite duration. The probability for a counterintuitive
transition is found to increase with the square of the coupling and decrease
with the squares of the interaction duration, the energy splitting between the
parallel energies, and the tilt (chirp) rate. Physical examples of this model
can be found in coherent atomic excitation and optical shielding in cold atomic
collisions
3D Spectroscopy of Local Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies: Kinematics of NGC 7673
The kinematic properties of the ionized gas of local Luminous Compact Blue
Galaxy (LCBG) NGC 7673 are presented using three dimensional data taken with
the PPAK integral field unit at the 3.5-m telescope in the Centro Astron\'omico
Hispano Alem\'an. Our data reveal an asymmetric rotating velocity field with a
peak to peak difference of 60 km s. The kinematic centre is found to be
at the position of a central velocity width maximum ( km
s), which is consistent with the position of the luminosity-weighted
centroid of the entire galaxy. The position angle of the minor rotation axis is
168 as measured from the orientation of the velocity field contours.
At least two decoupled kinematic components are found. The first one is compact
and coincides with the position of the second most active star formation region
(clump B). The second one is extended and does not have a clear optical
counterpart. No evidence of active galactic nuclei activity or supernovae
galactic winds powering any of these two components has been found. Our data,
however, show evidence in support of a previously proposed minor merger
scenario in which a dwarf galaxy, tentatively identified with clump B, is
falling into NGC 7673. and triggers the starburst. Finally, it is shown that
the dynamical mass of this galaxy may be severely underestimated when using the
derived rotation curve or the integrated velocity width, under the assumption

The radio properties of a complete, X-ray selected sample of nearby, massive elliptical galaxies
We investigate the radio properties of a complete sample of nearby, massive,
X-ray bright elliptical and S0 galaxies. Our sample contains 18 galaxies with
ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray fluxes Fx_(0.1-2.4 keV) > 3 x 10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2,
within a distance of 100 Mpc. For these galaxies, we have complete (18/18) VLA
radio and Chandra X-ray coverage. Nuclear radio emission is detected from 17/18
of the galaxies. Ten of the galaxies exhibit extended radio emission; of these
ten, all but one also exhibit clear evidence of interaction of the radio source
with the surrounding, X-ray emitting gas. Among the seven galaxies with
unresolved radio sources, one has clear, and one has small, cavity-like
features in the Chandra X-ray images; a third has a disturbed X-ray morphology.
Using a radio luminosity limit equivalent to L_(1.4 Ghz) > 10^(23) W/Hz to
calculate the radio-loud fraction, we find that this misses the majority of the
radio detected galaxies in the sample. We determine integrated radio-to-X-ray
flux ratios for the galaxies, GRx, which are shown to span a large range
(factor of 100). We calculate the mass-weighted cooling times within 1 kpc, and
find hints for an anticorrelation with the radio luminosity. We also calculate
limits on k/f, where k is the ratio of the total particle energy to that of
relativistic electrons radiating in the range 10 MHz-10 GHz and f is the volume
filling factor of the plasma in the cavity. The k/f distribution is also broad,
reflecting previous results for larger galaxy clusters. Lowering the X-ray flux
limit, at the expense of less complete VLA and Chandra coverage, increases the
size of our sample to 42 galaxies. Nuclear radio activity is detected in at

Comparison of DNA histograms by standard flow cytometry and image cytometry on sections in Barrett's adenocarcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to compare DNA histograms obtained by standard flow cytometry (FC) and high fidelity image cytometry on sections (ICS) in normal gastrointestinal mucosa and Barrett's adenocarcinoma (BAC).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 10 normal controls from 10 subjects and 42 BAC tissues from 17 patients were examined. DNA FC was performed using standard techniques and ICS was carried out by Automated Cellular Imaging System (ACIS). DNA ploidy histograms were classified into diploid with peak DNA index (DI) at 0.9–1.1, and aneuploid with peak DI > 1.1. DI values of aneuploid peaks were determined. Additionally, for DNA ICS, heterogeneity index (HI) representing DNA content heterogeneity, and histograms containing cells with DI > G2 were also identified.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All control samples were diploid by both FC and ICS analyses. In BAC, FC showed diploid peaks in 29%, diploid peaks with additional aneuploid or tetraploid peaks in 57%, and 14% of the samples, respectively. In contrast, ICS showed aneuploid peaks in all the cases with peak DI > 1.25; 37 cases had peak DI between 1.25 and 2.25; and 5 cases had peak DI > 2.25. HI values (mean ± SD) were 11.3 ± 1.1 in controls and 32.4 ± 8.5 in BAC (p < 0.05). Controls had no G2 exceeding cells. However, 19/37 (51%) of the cases with primary peak DI < 2.25 had cells exceeding 9N.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>ICS detects DNA aneuploidy in all BAC samples while FC missed the diagnosis of aneuploidy in 29%. In addition, ICS provides more information on HI and G2 exceeding rates.</p
