Cross-Cultural Analysis of Food Systems
The central focus of my project is to explore the food system and Mediterranean diet consumed in the country of Spain based on my study abroad trip to Barcelona. This project compares and contrasts the food system and diet of this country with that of the United States to find what makes them different, and to explore the advantages and disadvantages of each system
Star Formation in Quasar Disk
Using a version of the ZEUS code, we carry out two-dimensional simulations of
self-gravitating shearing sheets, with application to QSO accretion disks at a
few thousand Schwarzschild radii, corresponding to a few hundredths of a parsec
for a 10^8 solar-mass black hole. Radiation pressure and optically thick
radiative cooling are implemented via vertical averages. We determine
dimensionless versions of the maximum surface density, accretion rate, and
effective viscosity that can be sustained by density-wave turbulence without
fragmentation. Where fragments do form, we study the final masses that result.
The maximum Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter is approximately 0.4.
Fragmentation occurs when the cooling time is less than about twice the
shearing time, as found by Gammie and others, but can also occur at very long
cooling times in sheets that are strongly radiation-pressure dominated. For
accretion at the Eddington rate onto a 10^8 solar-mass black hole,
fragmentation occurs beyond four thousand Schwarzschild radii, r_s. Near this
radius, initial fragment masses are several hundred suns, consistent with
estimates from linear stability; final masses after merging increase with the
size of the sheet, reaching several thousand suns in our largest simulations.
With increasing black-hole mass at a fixed Eddington ratio, self-gravity
prevails to smaller multiples of r_s, where radiation pressure is more
important and the cooling time is longer compared to the dynamical time;
nevertheless, fragmentation can occur and produces larger initial fragment
masses. We also find energy conservation is likely to be a challenge for all
eulerian codes in self-gravitating regimes where radiation pressure dominates.Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to Ap
Bone apparent and material densities examined by cone beam computed tomography and the Archimedes technique: comparison of the two methods and their results
An understanding of bone apparent and material densities and how they vary within bone at the organ level is of great interest in the understanding of degenerative bone conditions and for biomedical engineering applications. The densities of bone tissue have been shown to appreciably influence the mechanical competency of bone tissue. In order to assess the density of bone in the body, it is important to ensure that the parameters being measured in vivo are truly representative of the real values that have been measured in vitro. To assess the densities of bone across the entire spectrum of available porosities, 112 samples from an elephant femur were assessed using the Archimedes method (water displacement) and by micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). Comparisons were drawn between the two methods to determine if the densities calculated by μ-CT were representative of physically measured densities. The results showed that the apparent densities measured over the entire spectrum were very similar but varied in the intermediate regions of bone tissue, probably due to an increased presence of osteoid, increased remodeling, or experimental error as these type of bone is known for the presence of regions of closed cell geometry in the cancellous architecture. It could be argued that the measurements taken by μ-CT are more reliable of bone density values for the mineralized regions of bone as the threshold is defined with respect to the absorption of X-rays by the mineral. In contrast, the Archimedes method thresholds everything with a density value above that of the surrounding medium, 1 (g cm−3) for water, and hence it is more sensitive to the presence of osteoid, soft collagenous matrix, and epithelial cell layers. Further research is required to optimize the parameters of scanning methods for the structural properties of different bone tissue porosities, which hopefully in turn will be able to provide a basis for the development of predictive remodeling models

Frictional behavior of oceanic transform faults and its influence on earthquake characteristics

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 117 (2012): B04315, doi:10.1029/2011JB009025.We use a three-dimensional strike-slip fault model in the framework of rate and state-dependent friction to investigate earthquake behavior and scaling relations on oceanic transform faults (OTFs). Gabbro friction data under hydrothermal conditions are mapped onto OTFs using temperatures from (1) a half-space cooling model, and (2) a thermal model that incorporates a visco-plastic rheology, non-Newtonian viscous flow and the effects of shear heating and hydrothermal circulation. Without introducing small-scale frictional heterogeneities on the fault, our model predicts that an OTF segment can transition between seismic and aseismic slip over many earthquake cycles, consistent with the multimode hypothesis for OTF ruptures. The average seismic coupling coefficient χ is strongly dependent on the ratio of seismogenic zone width W to earthquake nucleation size h*; χ increases by four orders of magnitude as W/h* increases from ∼1 to 2. Specifically, the average χ = 0.15 ± 0.05 derived from global OTF earthquake catalogs can be reached at W/h* ≈ 1.2–1.7. Further, in all simulations the area of the largest earthquake rupture is less than the total seismogenic area and we predict a deficiency of large earthquakes on long transforms, which is also consistent with observations. To match these observations over this narrow range of W/h* requires an increase in the characteristic slip distance dc as the seismogenic zone becomes wider and normal stress is higher on long transforms. Earthquake magnitude and distribution on the Gofar and Romanche transforms are better predicted by simulations using the visco-plastic model than the half-space cooling model.This work was supported by NSF-EAR award 1015221,

Deficits in narrative abilities in child British Sign Language users with specific language impairment
This study details the first ever investigation of narrative skills in a group of 17 deaf signing children who have been diagnosed with disorders in their British Sign Language development compared with a control group of 17 deaf child signers matched for age, gender, education, quantity, and quality of language exposure and non-verbal intelligence. Children were asked to generate a narrative based on events in a language free video. Narratives were analysed for global structure, information content and local level grammatical devices, especially verb morphology. The language-impaired group produced shorter, less structured and grammatically simpler narratives than controls, with verb morphology particularly impaired. Despite major differences in how sign and spoken languages are articulated, narrative is shown to be a reliable marker of language impairment across the modality boundaries
The Lovelace–De Morgan mathematical correspondence: A critical re-appraisal
Ada Lovelace is widely regarded as an early pioneer of computer science, due to an 1843 paper about Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, which, had it been built, would have been a general-purpose computer. However, there has been considerable disagreement among scholars as to her mathematical proficiency. This paper presents the first account by historians of mathematics of the correspondence between Lovelace and the mathematician Augustus De Morgan from 1840--41. Detailed contextual analysis allows us to present a corrected ordering of the archive material, countering previous claims of Lovelace's mathematical inadequacies, and presenting a more nuanced assessment of her abilities
What Type of Collegiate Pilot is Likely to Experience Imposter Phenomenon?
Background: Imposter Syndrome (IS), also called Imposter Phenomenon (IP), has been studied in a variety of paradigms over the past few decades. However, IP is not a well-researched concept in the field of aviation, and no studies that we know of have examined this phenomenon with student pilots.
Method: Two hundred and forty-one student pilots were interviewed from two southeastern universities with flight schools. Participants were asked a series of questions about demographics, flight training, personality measures, self-efficacy, self-handicapping, and perceived organizational support. In addition, they responded to the Clance IP scale.
Results: A regression equation was created from the first dataset and tested for model fit with a second dataset. Four factors were found to be significant, including measures of self-handicapping, measures of self-efficacy, income, and the type of flight school, accounting for approximately 40% of the variance in the data. Model fit was strong, providing future researchers with a predictive model of IP for student pilots.
Conclusion: These findings show that IP is prevalent in student pilots and correlates with self-handicapping. This is a concern that should be addressed in aviation programs
