Spectroscopic characterisation of CARMENES target candidates from FEROS, CAFE and HRS high-resolution spectra
CARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exoearths with
Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) started a new planet survey on
M-dwarfs in January this year. The new high-resolution spectrographs are
operating in the visible and near-infrared at Calar Alto Observatory. They will
perform high-accuracy radial-velocity measurements (goal 1 m s-1) of about 300
M-dwarfs with the aim to detect low-mass planets within habitable zones. We
characterised the candidate sample for CARMENES and provide fundamental
parameters for these stars in order to constrain planetary properties and
understand star-planet systems. Using state-of-the-art model atmospheres
(PHOENIX-ACES) and chi2-minimization with a downhill-simplex method we
determine effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity [Fe/H] for
high-resolution spectra of around 480 stars of spectral types M0.0-6.5V taken
with FEROS, CAFE and HRS. We find good agreement between the models and our
observed high-resolution spectra. We show the performance of the algorithm, as
well as results, parameter and spectral type distributions for the CARMENES
candidate sample, which is used to define the CARMENES target sample. We also

Effects of parasite and historic driven selection on the diversity and structure of a MHC-II gene in a small mammal species (Peromyscus leucopus) undergoing range expansion.
Abstract Genetic diversity may decrease from the centre to the margin of a species distribution range due to neutral stochastic processes. Selection may also alter genetic diversity in non-neutral markers, such as genes associated with the immune system. Both neutral processes and selection on the immune system are thus expected to affect the spatial distribution of such markers, but the relative strength of each has been scarcely studied. Here, we compared the diversity of a neutral marker (mitochondrial cytochrome b)and a selected marker (DRB gene from the MHC-II), in eastern-North American populations of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), a species known for its role of main reservoir of the Lyme disease. We observed distinct phylogeographic patterns with these two markers, which may be the result of selection pressure acting upon the DRB gene. As predicted by the central marginal hypothesis, we observed a loss of neutral genetic diversity toward the margin of the species distribution. A decrease in diversity was also observed for the DRB gene, likely due to genetic drift and positive selection operated by helminth parasites. Such a loss in genetic diversity at the range margin may slow down the ongoing expansion of P. leucopus, by counterbalancing the effect of global warming on the mouse survival at higher latitude

49Cr: Towards full spectroscopy up to 4 MeV
The nucleus 49Cr has been studied analysing gamma-gamma coincidences in the
reaction 46Ti(alpha,n)49Cr at the bombarding energy of 12 MeV. The level scheme
has been greatly extended at low excitation energy and several new lifetimes
have been determined by means of the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method.
Shell model calculations in the full pf configuration space reproduce well
negative-parity levels. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for positive parity
levels by extending the configuration space to include a nucleon-hole either in
the 1d3/2 or in the 2s1/2 orbitals.
A nearly one-to-one correspondence is found between experimental and
theoretical levels up to an excitation energy of 4 MeV.
Experimental data and shell model calculations are interpreted in terms of
the Nilsson diagram and the particle-rotor model, showing the strongly coupled
nature of the bands in this prolate nucleus. Nine values of K(pi) are proposed
for the levels observed in this experiment.
As a by-result it is shown that the values of the experimental magnetic
moments in 1f7/2 nuclei are well reproduced without quenching the nucleon

CARMENES input catalogue of M dwarfs. I. Low-resolution spectroscopy with CAFOS
Context. CARMENES is a stabilised, high-resolution, double-channel
spectrograph at the 3.5 m Calar Alto telescope. It is optimally designed for
radial-velocity surveys of M dwarfs with potentially habitable Earth-mass
planets. Aims. We prepare a list of the brightest, single M dwarfs in each
spectral subtype observable from the northern hemisphere, from which we will
select the best planet-hunting targets for CARMENES. Methods. In this first
paper on the preparation of our input catalogue, we compiled a large amount of
public data and collected low-resolution optical spectroscopy with CAFOS at the
2.2 m Calar Alto telescope for 753 stars. We derived accurate spectral types
using a dense grid of standard stars, a double least-squares minimisation
technique, and 31 spectral indices previously defined by other authors.
Additionally, we quantified surface gravity, metallicity, and chromospheric
activity for all the stars in our sample. Results. We calculated spectral types
for all 753 stars, of which 305 are new and 448 are revised. We measured
pseudo-equivalent widths of Halpha for all the stars in our sample, concluded
that chromospheric activity does not affect spectral typing from our indices,
and tabulated 49 stars that had been reported to be young stars in open
clusters, moving groups, and stellar associations. Of the 753 stars, two are
new subdwarf candidates, three are T Tauri stars, 25 are giants, 44 are K
dwarfs, and 679 are M dwarfs. Many of the 261 investigated dwarfs in the range
M4.0-8.0 V are among the brightest stars known in their spectral subtype.
Conclusions. This collection of low-resolution spectroscopic data serves as a
candidate target list for the CARMENES survey and can be highly valuable for
other radial-velocity surveys of M dwarfs and for studies of cool dwarfs in the
solar neighbourhood.Comment: A&A, in pres
Generalized Totalizer Encoding for Pseudo-Boolean Constraints
Pseudo-Boolean constraints, also known as 0-1 Integer Linear Constraints, are
used to model many real-world problems. A common approach to solve these
constraints is to encode them into a SAT formula. The runtime of the SAT solver
on such formula is sensitive to the manner in which the given pseudo-Boolean
constraints are encoded. In this paper, we propose generalized Totalizer
encoding (GTE), which is an arc-consistency preserving extension of the
Totalizer encoding to pseudo-Boolean constraints. Unlike some other encodings,
the number of auxiliary variables required for GTE does not depend on the
magnitudes of the coefficients. Instead, it depends on the number of distinct
combinations of these coefficients. We show the superiority of GTE with respect
to other encodings when large pseudo-Boolean constraints have low number of
distinct coefficients. Our experimental results also show that GTE remains
competitive even when the pseudo-Boolean constraints do not have this

Spectrum radial velocity analyser (SERVAL). High-precision radial velocities and two alternative spectral indicators
Context: The CARMENES survey is a high-precision radial velocity (RV)
programme that aims to detect Earth-like planets orbiting low-mass stars.
Aims: We develop least-squares fitting algorithms to derive the RVs and
additional spectral diagnostics implemented in the SpEctrum Radial Velocity
Analyser (SERVAL), a publicly available python code.
Methods: We measured the RVs using high signal-to-noise templates created by
coadding all available spectra of each star.We define the chromatic index as
the RV gradient as a function of wavelength with the RVs measured in the
echelle orders. Additionally, we computed the differential line width by
correlating the fit residuals with the second derivative of the template to
track variations in the stellar line width.
Results: Using HARPS data, our SERVAL code achieves a RV precision at the
level of 1m/s. Applying the chromatic index to CARMENES data of the active star
YZ CMi, we identify apparent RV variations induced by stellar activity. The
differential line width is found to be an alternative indicator to the commonly
used full width half maximum.
Conclusions: We find that at the red optical wavelengths (700--900 nm)
obtained by the visual channel of CARMENES, the chromatic index is an excellent
tool to investigate stellar active regions and to identify and perhaps even

Four-colour photometry of eclipsing binaries. XLI uvby light curves for AD Bootis, HW Canis Majoris, SW Canis Majoris, V636 Centauri, VZ Hydrae, and WZ Ophiuchi
CONTEXT: Accurate mass, radius, and abundance determinations from binaries
provide important information on stellar evolution, fundamental to central
fields in modern astrophysics and cosmology.
AIMS: Within the long-term Copenhagen Binary Project, we aim to obtain
high-quality light curves and standard photometry for double-lined detached
eclipsing binaries with late A, F, and G type main-sequence components, needed
for the determination of accurate absolute dimensions and abundances, and for
detailed comparisons with results from recent stellar evolutionary models.
METHODS: Between March 1985 and July 2007, we carried out photometric
observations of AD Boo, HW CMA, SW CMa, V636 Cen, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph at the
Str"omgren Automatic Telescope at ESO, La Silla.
RESULTS: We obtained complete uvby light curves, ephemerides, and standard
uvby\beta indices for all six systems.For V636 Cen and HW CMa, we present the
first modern light curves, whereas for AD Boo, SW CMa, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph, they
are both more accurate and more complete than earlier data. Due to a high
orbital eccentricity (e = 0.50), combined with a low orbital inclination (i =
84.7), only one eclipse, close to periastron, occurs for HW CMa. For the two
other eccentric systems, V636 Cen (e = 0.134) and SW CMa (e = 0.316), apsidal
motion has been detected with periods of 5270 +/- 335 and 14900 +/- 3600 years,

Astrometric positions for 18 irregular satellites of giant planets from 23 years of observations
The irregular satellites of the giant planets are believed to have been
captured during the evolution of the solar system. Knowing their physical
parameters, such as size, density, and albedo is important for constraining
where they came from and how they were captured. The best way to obtain these
parameters are observations in situ by spacecrafts or from stellar occultations
by the objects. Both techniques demand that the orbits are well known. We aimed
to obtain good astrometric positions of irregular satellites to improve their
orbits and ephemeris. We identified and reduced observations of several
irregular satellites from three databases containing more than 8000 images
obtained between 1992 and 2014 at three sites (Observat\'orio do Pico dos Dias,
Observatoire de Haute-Provence, and European Southern Observatory - La Silla).
We used the software PRAIA (Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images
Automatically) to make the astrometric reduction of the CCD frames. The UCAC4
catalog represented the International Celestial Reference System in the
reductions. Identification of the satellites in the frames was done through
their ephemerides as determined from the SPICE/NAIF kernels. Some procedures
were followed to overcome missing or incomplete information (coordinates,
date), mostly for the older images. We managed to obtain more than 6000
positions for 18 irregular satellites: 12 of Jupiter, 4 of Saturn, 1 of Uranus
(Sycorax), and 1 of Neptune (Nereid). For some satellites the number of
obtained positions is more than 50\% of what was used in earlier orbital
numerical integrations. Comparison of our positions with recent JPL ephemeris
suggests there are systematic errors in the orbits for some of the irregular
satellites. The most evident case was an error in the inclination of Carme.Comment: 9 pages, with 3 being online materia
