    A Significant Threat to Neuropsychological Test Validity

    Objective: Neuropsychological test security is vital to the validity of assessment. Previous research in our lab has shown that 71% of participants use the Internet to prepare for neuropsychological evaluations (Kimpton, 2015). We investigated the availability of information related to neuropsychological tests on the Internet, a topic that has received little attention in the research literature. Participants and Methods: First, we decided a priori that we would not reveal the terms used in this Internet search, as to not contribute to the problem of threatened test security. We used the Internet search engine “Google” to begin a search using a general question that a person with no neuropsychological expertise would use to access initial results. We obtained 899,000 results for this question. We decided that of these results, we would select from the first five results. One link provided us with a list of 52 commonly used neuropsychological tests. This list also included information about the type of cognitive information that the test was meant to assess. Lastly, we searched for these tests on Google Images and YouTube in order to investigate the extent of the information available. Results: The protocols for 43% of the 52 tests were available on Google Images. At least partial administration demonstrations were available on YouTube for 54% of the 52 neuropsychological tests. These demonstrations revealed the test protocols and basic strategy of the tests. Conclusions: A substantial amount of information regarding neuropsychological tests is available on Google Images and YouTube, threatening the validity of these tests. It is recommended that professional neuropsychological associations begin to develop guidelines regarding appropriate content for websites and identify and continuously monitor websites that contain threatening information

    Snake prices and crocodile appetites: Aquatic wildlife supply and demand on Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia

    Commercial trade is a major driver of over-exploitation of wild species, but the pattern of demand and how it responds to changes in supply is poorly understood. Here we explore the markets for snakes from Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia to evaluate future exploitation scenarios, identify entry points for conservation and, more generally, to illustrate the value of multi-scale analysis of markets to traded wildlife conservation. In Cambodia, the largest driver of snake exploitation is the domestic trade in snakes as crocodile food. We estimate that farmed crocodiles consume between 2.7 and 12.2 million snakes per year. The market price for crocodiles has been in decline since 2003, which, combined with rising prices for their food, has led to a reduced frequency of feeding and closure of small farms. The large farms that generate a disproportionate amount of the demand for snakes continue to operate in anticipation of future market opportunities, and preferences for snakes could help maintain demand if market prices for crocodiles rise to pre 2003 levels. In the absence of a sustained demand from crocodile farms, it is also possible that alternative markets will develop, such as one for human snack food. The demand for snakes, however, also depends on the availability of substitute resources, principally fish. The substitutability and low price elasticity of demand offers a relatively sustainable form of consumerism. Given the nature of these market drivers, addressing consumer preferences and limiting the protection of snakes to their breeding season are likely to be the most effective tools for conservation.     Persistence of double-stranded RNA in insect hemolymph as a potential determiner of RNA interference success: Evidence from Manduca sexta and Blattella germanica

    a b s t r a c t RNA interference (RNAi) is a specific gene silencing mechanism mediated by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), which has been harnessed as a useful reverse genetics tool in insects. Unfortunately, however, this technology has been limited by the variable sensitivity of insect species to RNAi. We propose that rapid degradation of dsRNA in insect hemolymph could impede gene silencing by RNAi and experimentally investigate the dynamics of dsRNA persistence in two insects, the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, a species in which experimental difficulty has been experienced with RNAi protocols and the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, which is known to be highly susceptible to experimental RNAi. An ex vivo assay revealed that dsRNA was rapidly degraded by an enzyme in M. sexta hemolymph plasma, whilst dsRNA persisted much longer in B. germanica plasma. A quantitative reverse transcription PCR-based assay revealed that dsRNA, accordingly, disappeared rapidly from M. sexta hemolymph in vivo. The M. sexta dsRNAse is inactivated by exposure to high temperature and is inhibited by EDTA. These findings lead us to propose that the rate of persistence of dsRNA in insect hemolymph (mediated by the action of one or more nucleases) could be an important factor in determining the susceptibility of insect species to RNAi

    Low serum cortisol predicts early death following acute myocardial infarction

    <b>Objective</b>: Low serum cortisol concentrations have been associated with adverse prognosis in critical illness of diverse aetiology. We aimed to determine whether low serum cortisol concentrations are associated with adverse prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction. <b>Design</b>: Nested case-control study. <b>Setting</b>: Prospective cohort study of consecutive patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction to 9 Scottish hospitals. <b>Patients</b>: 100 patients who survived 30 days (controls) and 100 patients who died within 30 days (cases). <b>Measurements and Main Results</b>: Admission cortisol concentrations were lower in patients who died than those who survived (median 1,189 versus 1,355 nmol/L, p<0.001). A cortisol concentration in the bottom quartile (<1,136 nmol/L) was a strong predictor of death within 30 days, and remained so after adjustment for age and cardiac troponin concentration (adjusted OR 8.78, 95% CI 3.09-24.96, p<0.001). <b>Conclusions</b>: Patients who mount a lesser cortisol stress response to acute myocardial infarction have a poorer early prognosis

    Thermally triggerable, anchoring block copolymers for use in aqueous inkjet printing

    Towards the goal of shifting from toxic organic solvents to aqueous-based formulations in commercial inkjet printing, a series of well-defined poly[(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-stat-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide)-block-propyl methacrylate], P[(HEA-st-HMAA)-b-PMA], amphiphilic block copolymers with varying degrees of polymerization and comonomer compositions were synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Optimized RAFT polymerization conditions were found to allow larger batch synthesis (>20 g scale) without compromise over molecular design control (molecular mass, hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, dispersity, etc.). The copolymers were subsequently investigated for their crosslinking and adhesive properties, as well as jetting performance, to determine their suitability for use in aqueous ink formulations. Crosslinking was found to occur much faster for copolymers containing more of the crosslinkable HMAA monomer units and at higher molecular masses, allowing control over the required post-deposition processing time. The amphiphilic block copolymers synthesized herein demonstrate enhanced adhesive properties compared to a selection of commercial inks whilst also achieving high print quality and performance for use in aqueous continuous inkjet (CIJ) printing, which is a key step towards greener processes in the packaging industries, where printing onto hydrophobic substrates is needed

    VAST: An ASKAP Survey for Variables and Slow Transients

    The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae and orphan afterglows of gamma ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of five seconds and greater.     Legal determinants of external finance revisited : the inverse relationship between investor protection and societal well-being

    This paper investigates relationships between corporate governance traditions and quality of life as measured by a number of widely reported indicators. It provides an empirical analysis of indicators of societal health in developed economies using a classification based on legal traditions. Arguably the most widely cited work in the corporate governance literature has been the collection of papers by La Porta et al. which has shown, inter alia, statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for investor protection. We show statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for societal health. Our comparative evidence suggests that the interests of investors may not be congruent with the interests of wider society, and that the criteria for judging the effectiveness of approaches to corporate governance should not be restricted to financial metrics
