    Astrophysical Lasers Operating in optical Fe II Lines Lines in Stellar Ejecta of Eta Carinae

    After the discovery of space masers based on OH radicals (Weaver et al, 1965) and H2O (Cheung et al, 1969) such microwave lasers have been found to work in more than 100 molecular species (Elitzur, 1992; Townes, 1997), as well as in highly excited H atoms (Strelnitski et al,1996). In the IR region (10 microns), the effect of stimulated emission of radiation in the CO2 molecule has been discovered in the Martian and Venus' atmospheres (Betz et al, 1976; Mumma et al, 1981). We report here on the discovery of laser action in the range 0.9-2 micr. in several spectral lines of Fe II, which are associated with transitions from "pseudo-metastable" states populated by spontaneous transitions from Ly-alpha pumped Fe II levels. The intense Ly-alpha radiation is formed in the HII region of gas condensations close to the star Eta Carinae. The laser transitions form together with spontaneous transitions closed radiative cycles, one of which includes the extremely bright 2507/09 A lines. Closed radiative cycles, together with an accidental mixing of energy levels, may provide an explanation of the abnormal intensities of these UV non-lasing lines. Using the complicated energy level diagram of Fe II we present those peculiar features, which are essential for the inverted population and laser effect: the pumping, the level mixing, and the "bottle neck" for spontaneous decay. The laser action is a new indicator of non-equilibrium and spatially non-homogeneous physical conditions as well as a high brightness temperature of Ly-alpha in ejecta from eruptive stars. Such conditions are very difficult to probe by existing methods, and we propose some future experiments.     Using interpretative phenomenological analysis to inform physiotherapy practice: An introduction with reference to the lived experience of cerebellar ataxia

This article aims to introduce interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), a research methodology oriented toward exploring and understanding the experience of a particular phenomenon (e.g., living with spinal cord injury or chronic pain, or being the carer of someone with a particular health condition). Researchers using IPA try to find out how people make sense of their experiences and the meanings they attach to them. The findings from IPA research are highly nuanced and offer a fine grained understanding that can be used to contextualise existing quantitative research, to inform understanding of novel or underresearched topics or, in their own right, to provoke a reappraisal of what is considered known about a specified phenomenon. We advocate IPA as a useful and accessible approach to qualitative research that can be used in the clinical setting to inform physiotherapy practice and the development of services from the perspective of individuals with particular health conditions.This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund

    New Wolf-Rayet star and its circumstellar nebula in Aquila

    We report the discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet star in Aquila via detection of its circumstellar nebula (reminiscent of ring nebulae associated with late WN stars) using the Spitzer Space Telescope archival data. Our spectroscopic follow-up of the central point source associated with the nebula showed that it is a WN7h star (we named it WR121b). We analyzed the spectrum of WR121b by using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmospheres, obtaining a stellar temperature of ~ 50 kK. The stellar wind composition is dominated by helium with ~ 20 per cent of hydrogen. The stellar spectrum is highly reddened (E_{B-V} = 2.85 mag). Adopting an absolute magnitude of M_v = -5.7, the star has a luminosity of log L/Lsun = 5.75 and a mass-loss rate of 10^{-4.7} Msun/yr, and resides in a distance of 6.3 kpc. We searched for a possible parent cluster of WR121b and found that this star is located at ~ 1 degree from the young star cluster embedded in the giant HII region W43 (containing a WN7+a/OB? star -- WR121a). We also discovered a bow shock around the O9.5III star ALS9956, located at ~ 0.5 degree from the cluster.     The Megamaser Cosmology Project. III. Accurate Masses of Seven Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galaxies with Circumnuclear Megamaser Disks

    Observations of H2_2O masers from circumnuclear disks in active galaxies for the Megamaser Cosmology Project allow accurate measurement of the mass of supermassive black holes (BH) in these galaxies. We present the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) images and kinematics of water maser emission in six active galaxies: NGC~1194, NGC~2273, NGC~2960 (Mrk~1419), NGC~4388, NGC~6264 and NGC~6323. We use the Keplerian rotation curves of these six megamaser galaxies, plus a seventh previously published, to determine accurate enclosed masses within the central ∌0.3\sim0.3 pc of these galaxies, smaller than the radius of the sphere of influence of the central mass in all cases. We also set lower limits to the central mass densities of between 0.12 and 60 ×1010M⊙\times 10^{10} M_{\odot}~pc−3^{-3}. For six of the seven disks, the high central densities rule out clusters of stars or stellar remnants as the central objects, and this result further supports our assumption that the enclosed mass can be attributed predominantly to a supermassive black hole. The seven BHs have masses ranging between 0.76 and 6.5×\times107M⊙^7 M_{\odot}. The BH mass errors are ≈11\approx11\%, dominated by the uncertainty of the Hubble constant. We compare the megamaser BH mass determination with other BH mass measurement techniques. The BH mass based on virial estimation in four galaxies is consistent with the megamaser BH mass given the latest empirical value of ⟹f⟩\langle f \rangle, but the virial mass uncertainty is much greater.     Two short mass-loss events that unveil the binary heart of Minkowski's Butterfly Nebula

    Studying the appearance and properties of bipolar winds is critical to understand the stellar evolution from the AGB to the planetary nebula (PN) phase. Many uncertainties exist regarding the presence and role of binary stellar systems, mainly due to the deficit of conclusive observational evidences. We investigate the extended equatorial distribution around the early bipolar planetary nebula M 2-9 ("Minkowski's Butterfly Nebula") to gather new information on the mechanism of the axial ejections. Interferometric millimeter observations of molecular emission provide the most comprehensive view of the equatorial mass distribution and kinematics in early PNe. Here we present subarcsecond angular-resolution observations of the 12CO J=2-1 line and continuum emission with the Plateau de Bure interferometer. The data reveal two ring-shaped and eccentric structures at the equatorial basis of the two coaxial optical lobes. The two rings were formed during short mass-loss episodes (~ 40 yr), separated by ~ 500 yr. Their positional and dynamical imprints provide evidence of the presence of a binary stellar system at the center, which yields critical information on its orbital characteristics, including a mass estimate for the secondary of ~< 0.2 \ms. The presence of a stellar system with a modest-mass companion at the center of such an elongated bipolar PN strongly supports the binary-based models, because these are more easily able to explain the frequent axisymmetric ejections in PNe.Comment: 8 page

    Congenital abnormalities of the nail are rare conditions that are most frequently associated with congenital ectodermal syndromes involving several of the epidermal appendages including the skin, teeth, hair and nails. Isolated recessive nail dysplasia (IRND) is much rarer but has recently been recognized as a condition resulting in 20‐nail dystrophy in the absence of other cutaneous or extracutaneous findings. A few case reports have identified mutations in the Frizzled 6 (FZD6) gene in families presenting with abnormal nails consistent with IRND. These reports have highlighted the role of Wnt–FZD signalling in the process of nail formation. We report three families presenting with features of IRND, in whom we identified mutations in FZD6, including one previously unreported mutation

    Local stochastic non-Gaussianity and N-body simulations

    Large-scale clustering of highly biased tracers of large-scale structure has emerged as one of the best observational probes of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type (i.e. f_{NL}^{local}). This type of non-Gaussianity can be generated in multifield models of inflation such as the curvaton model. Recently, Tseliakhovich, Hirata, and Slosar showed that the clustering statistics depend qualitatively on the ratio of inflaton to curvaton power \xi after reheating, a free parameter of the model. If \xi is significantly different from zero, so that the inflaton makes a non-negligible contribution to the primordial adiabatic curvature, then the peak-background split ansatz predicts that the halo bias will be stochastic on large scales. In this paper, we test this prediction in N-body simulations. We find that large-scale stochasticity is generated, in qualitative agreement with the prediction, but that the level of stochasticity is overpredicted by ~30%. Other predictions, such as \xi independence of the halo bias, are confirmed by the simulations. Surprisingly, even in the Gaussian case we do not find that halo model predictions for stochasticity agree consistently with simulations, suggesting that semi-analytic modeling of stochasticity is generally more difficult than modeling halo bias.Comment: v3: minor changes matching published versio

    Fitness Correlates Of Song Repertoire Size In Free-Living Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia)

    Models of sexual selection propose that exaggerated secondary sexual ornaments indicate a male\u27s own fitness and the fitness of his offspring. These hypotheses have rarely been thoroughly tested in free-living individuals because overall fitness, as opposed to fitness components, is difficult to measure. We used 20 years of data from song sparrows ( Melospiza melodia) inhabiting Mandarte Island, British Columbia, Canada, to test whether a male\u27s song repertoire size, a secondary sexual trait, predicted overall measures of male or offspring fitness. Males with larger song repertoires contributed more independent and recruited offspring, and independent and recruited grandoffspring, to Mandarte\u27s population. This was because these males lived longer and reared a greater proportion of hatched chicks to independence from parental care, not because females mated to males with larger repertoires laid or hatched more eggs. Furthermore, independent offspring of males with larger repertoires were more likely to recruit and then to leave more grandoffspring than were offspring of males with small repertoires. Although we cannot distinguish whether observed fitness variation reflected genetic or environmental effects on males or their offspring, these data suggest that female song sparrows would gain immediate and intergenerational fitness benefits by pairing with males with large song repertoires

    Circumstellar masers in the Magellanic Clouds

    We have searched for 22 GHz H2O and 43/86/129 GHz SiO masers in bright IRAS point sources in the SMC and LMC, to test whether the kinematics of the mass loss from these stars depends on metallicity. H2O masers were detected in the red supergiants IRAS04553-6825 and IRAS05280-6910, and tentatively in the luminous IR object IRAS05216-6753 and the AGB star IRAS05329-6708. SiO masers were detected in IRAS04553-6825. The outflow velocity increases between the H2O masing zone near the dust-formation region and the more distant OH masing zone from 18 to 26 km/s for IRAS04553-6825 and from 6 to 17 km/s for IRAS05280-6910. The total sample of LMC targets is analysed in comparison with circumstellar masers in the Galactic Centre. The photon fluxes of circumstellar masers in the LMC are very similar to those in the Galactic Centre. The expansion velocities in the LMC appear to be 20% lower than for similarly bright OH masers in the Galactic Centre, but the data are consistent with no difference in expansion velocity. OH/IR stars in the LMC appear to have slower accelerating envelopes than OH/IR stars in the Galactic Centre. Masers in the LMC have blue-asymmetric emission profiles. This may be due to the amplification of stellar and/or free-free radiation, rather than the amplification of dust emission, and may be more pronounced in low metallicity envelopes. SiO maser strength increases with the photometric amplitude at 2.2 micron but is independent of the photometric amplitude at 10 micron. This suggests a strong connection between shocks in the dust-free SiO masing zone and the dust formation process.
