Positive words carry less information than negative words
We show that the frequency of word use is not only determined by the word
length \cite{Zipf1935} and the average information content
\cite{Piantadosi2011}, but also by its emotional content. We have analyzed
three established lexica of affective word usage in English, German, and
Spanish, to verify that these lexica have a neutral, unbiased, emotional
content. Taking into account the frequency of word usage, we find that words
with a positive emotional content are more frequently used. This lends support
to Pollyanna hypothesis \cite{Boucher1969} that there should be a positive bias
in human expression. We also find that negative words contain more information
than positive words, as the informativeness of a word increases uniformly with
its valence decrease. Our findings support earlier conjectures about (i) the
relation between word frequency and information content, and (ii) the impact of
positive emotions on communication and social links.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
Inter-hemispheric EEG coherence analysis in Parkinson's disease : Assessing brain activity during emotion processing
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is not only characterized by its prominent motor symptoms but also associated with disturbances in cognitive and emotional functioning. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of emotion processing on inter-hemispheric electroencephalography (EEG) coherence in PD. Multimodal emotional stimuli (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust) were presented to 20 PD patients and 30 age-, education level-, and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) while EEG was recorded. Inter-hemispheric coherence was computed from seven homologous EEG electrode pairs (AF3–AF4, F7–F8, F3–F4, FC5–FC6, T7–T8, P7–P8, and O1–O2) for delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. In addition, subjective ratings were obtained for a representative of emotional stimuli. Interhemispherically, PD patients showed significantly lower coherence in theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands than HC during emotion processing. No significant changes were found in the delta frequency band coherence. We also found that PD patients were more impaired in recognizing negative emotions (sadness, fear, anger, and disgust) than relatively positive emotions (happiness and surprise). Behaviorally, PD patients did not show impairment in emotion recognition as measured by subjective ratings. These findings suggest that PD patients may have an impairment of inter-hemispheric functional connectivity (i.e., a decline in cortical connectivity) during emotion processing. This study may increase the awareness of EEG emotional response studies in clinical practice to uncover potential neurophysiologic abnormalities
Assessing the Effects of the Transition from Multiple Daily Insulin Injections (MDI) to Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion in the Intensive Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Introduction: Intensive insulin therapy is currently the main treatment in type I diabetes mellitus (DM) which includes multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). The latter has become the preferred therapeutic mode, since it better mimics the physiological pancreatic action, althought there is limited evidence that supports its superiority to MDI. The aim of our study was to assess the effects of the transition from MDI to CSII in the intensive treatment of type 1 DM. Material and Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was perfonned in MDI patients that transited to CSII between 2006 and 2014. Data were collected regarding to weight, HbA1c, plasma glucose, lipid profile, creatinine, weekly frequency of episodes of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and presence of microvascular complications. The effects of the transition to CSII were also compared according to the following subgroups: pre-CSII HbA1c (7.0%); age ( 35 years); gender (male versus female); BMI (25 kg/m2); duration of illness ( 15 years); total daily dose (TDD) of insulin ( 45 units of insulin); ISF ( 40) and microvascular complications (presence versus absence). Results: The sample included 85 patients, mean age 38 +/- 11 years, 50 (58.8%) female, with duration of the disease 21 +/- 9 years. There was a significant reduction in the frequency of hypo and hyperglycemia events after transition to CSII (3.0 +/- 5.0 vs 2 +/- 2.2 per week, p= 0.001 and 5.5 +/- 6.1 vs 2.5 +/- 2.6 per week, p = 0.05, respectively). We also observed a greater glycemic benefit in the subgroups of patients with poorer metabolic control (HbA1c > 7%) compared to those with HbA1c s <= 7% (Delta HbA1c =-0.55% vs 0.20%, respectively, p < 0.05), for the first 6 months after CSII, being additionally reported a significant increase in HDL-C levels (2.81 +/- 10.34 mg/dL, p = 0.039). Conclusion: In this study, CSII therapy was shown to be more effective compared to MDI in patients with poorer metabolic control, being also noted a significant reduction of weekly frequency of hypo and hyperglycemia events. Notwithstanding the encouraging results linked with CSII, in the future, longer longitudinal studies will be mandatory in order to assess the real relative effectiveness of CSII in the treatment of type 1 DM

Pharmacological basis and clinical evidence of dabigatran therapy
Dabigatran is an emerging oral anticoagulant which is a direct inhibitor of thrombin activity. It has been approved in the European Union and the United States of America for the prevention of thrombosis after major orthopedic surgery. It has also been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for the prevention of stroke in chronic atrial fibrillation. Dabigatran provides a stable anticoagulation effect without any need to perform periodical laboratory controls. Of note, there is a growing amount of clinical evidence which shows its safety and efficacy. For these reasons, dabigatran may suppose a revolution in oral anticoagulation. However, two important limitations remain. First, it is contraindicated in patients with end-stage renal disease. Second, there is no evidence of the prevention of thrombosis in mechanical heart valves
Umbilical endosalpingiosis: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Endosalpingiosis describes the ectopic growth of Fallopian tube epithelium. Pathology confirms the presence of a tube-like epithelium containing three types of cells: ciliated, columnar cells; non-ciliated, columnar secretory mucous cells; and intercalary cells.</p> <p>We report the case of a woman with umbilical endosalpingiosis and examine the nature and characteristics of cutaneous endosalpingiosis by reviewing and combining the other four cases existing in the international literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 50-year-old Caucasian, Greek woman presented with a pale brown nodule in her umbilicus. The nodule was asymptomatic, with no cyclical discomfort or variation in size. Her personal medical, surgical and gynecologic history was uneventful. Measurement of Lifetime and Decay-Width Difference in B0s -> J/psi phi Decays
We measure the mean lifetime, tau=2/(Gamma_L+Gamma_H), and the width
difference, DeltaGamma=Gamma_L-Gamma_H, of the light and heavy mass eigenstates
of the B0s meson, B0sL and B0sH, in B0s -> J/psi phi decays using 1.7 fb^-1 of
data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar
collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B0s system in
the Standard Model, we obtain DeltaGamma = 0.076^+0.059_-0.063 (stat.) +- 0.006
(syst.) ps^-1 and tau = 1.52 +- 0.04 (stat.) +- 0.02 (syst.) ps, the most
precise measurements to date. Our constraints on the weak phase and DeltaGamma
are consistent with CP conservation.

Limits on Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ
boson production. The boson pairs are produced in ppbar collisions at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350 pb-1 of integrated
luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this
search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays
hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wgamma
boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18 < lambda < 0.17 and -0.46 < Delta
kappa < 0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cut-off scale Lambda=1.5 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Search for Pair Production of Scalar Top Quarks Decaying to a tau Lepton and a b Quark in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We search for pair production of supersymmetric top quarks (~t_1), followed
by R-parity violating decay ~t_1 -> tau b with a branching ratio beta, using
322 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II
detector at Fermilab. Two candidate events pass our final selection criteria,
consistent with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the
cross section sigma(~t_1 ~tbar_1)*beta^2 as a function of the stop mass
m(~t_1). Assuming beta=1, we set a 95% confidence level limit m(~t_1)>153
GeV/c^2. The limits are also applicable to the case of a third generation
scalar leptoquark (LQ_3) decaying LQ_3 -> tau b.Comment: 7 pages, 2 eps figure
Influence of emphysema distribution on pulmonary function parameters in COPD patients
Objective: To evaluate the impact that the distribution of emphysema has on clinical and functional severity in patients with COPD. Methods: The distribution of the emphysema was analyzed in COPD patients, who were classified according to a 5-point visual classification system of lung CT findings. We assessed the influence of emphysema distribution type on the clinical and functional presentation of COPD. We also evaluated
hypoxemia after the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and determined the six-minute walk distance (6MWD). Results: Eighty-six patients were included. The mean age was 65.2 ± 12.2 years, 91.9% were male, and all but one were smokers (mean smoking history, 62.7 ± 38.4 pack-years). The emphysema distribution was categorized as obviously upper lung-predominant (type 1), in 36.0% of the patients; slightly upper lung-predominant (type 2), in 25.6%; homogeneous between the upper and lower lung (type 3), in 16.3%;
and slightly lower lung-predominant (type 4), in 22.1%. Type 2 emphysema distribution was associated with lower FEV1 , FVC, FEV1 /FVC ratio, and DLCO. In comparison with the type 1 patients, the type 4 patients were more likely to have an FEV1 < 65% of the predicted value (OR = 6.91, 95% CI: 1.43-33.45; p = 0.016), a 6MWD < 350 m (OR = 6.36, 95% CI: 1.26-32.18; p = 0.025), and post-6MWT hypoxemia (OR = 32.66, 95% CI: 3.26-326.84; p = 0.003). The type 3 patients had a higher RV/TLC ratio, although the difference was not significant. Conclusions: The severity of COPD appears to be greater in type 4 patients, and type 3 patients tend to have greater hyperinflation. The distribution of emphysema could have a major impact on functional parameters and should be considered in the evaluation of COPD patients
