    Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy study of femtosecond laser-irradiated selenium-doped 'black' silicon

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 49-50).'Black silicon' refers to silicon that has been treated in a laser-ablation process to incorporate large amounts of chalcogen dopants. The material has been found to have greatly increased absorbance of visible and infared wavelength light in comparison to undoped crystalline silicon. Selenium-doped black silicon that had been annealed at different temperatures were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction. The goal of the investigation was to characterize the structure of the laser-altered regions of the material. In addition, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was conducted in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) in order to map spatial distribution of the selenium and the silicon were located within the material. The results of the TEM study showed roughly conical peaks of varying shapes protruding about 1 [mu]m from the surface of the material. The material is altered up to a depth of up to 1-2 [mu]m, where polycrystalline or amorphous layers were observed. Electron diffraction studies revealed increased crystallinity in the annealed sample. A continuous, sharp interface between the affected region and unaltered substrate was found and particles of diameter 5-100 nm embedded within the silicon were observed. The STEM-EDX studies showed that the selenium was dispersed inhomogenously throughout the material. The selenium is concentrated near the interface of the unaltered Si substrate and the laser-altered layer and a high local concentration of selenium in the embedded particles was recorded. The findings in this study provide a first look at the underlying structure of black silicon and will lead to future work characterizing the material.by Arthur H. Reading.S.B

    We compute several total and differential cross sections relevant to top and WWZ physics at future e+ee^+e^- colliders taking into account the full set of Feynman diagrams for six fermion final states. We also include in our calculations initial state radiation and beamstrahlung effects, and the most important QCD corrections in an approximate (naive) form.     Automatic Computation of Feynman Diagrams

    Quantum corrections significantly influence the quantities observed in modern particle physics. The corresponding theoretical computations are usually quite lengthy which makes their automation mandatory. This review reports on the current status of automatic calculation of Feynman diagrams in particle physics. The most important theoretical techniques are introduced and their usefulness is demonstrated with the help of simple examples. A survey over frequently used programs and packages is provided, discussing their abilities and fields of applications. Subsequently, some powerful packages which have already been applied to important physical problems are described in more detail. The review closes with the discussion of a few typical applications for the automated computation of Feynman diagrams, addressing current physical questions like properties of the ZZ and Higgs boson, four-loop corrections to renormalization group functions and two-loop electroweak corrections.Comment: Latex, 62 pages.     Physical growth during the first year of life. A longitudinal study in rural and urban areas of Hanoi, Vietnam

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Good infant growth is important for future health. Assessing growth is common in pediatric care all over the world, both at the population and individual level. There are few studies of birth weight and growth studies comparing urban and rural communities in Vietnam. The first aim is to describe and compare the birth weight distributions and physical growth (weight and length) of children during their first year in one rural and one urban area of Hanoi Vietnam. The second aim is to study associations between the anthropometric outcomes and indicators of the economic and educational situations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Totally 1,466 children, born from 1<sup>st </sup>March, 2009 to June 2010, were followed monthly from birth to 12 months of age in two Health and Demographic Surveillance Sites; one rural and one urban. In all, 14,199 measurements each of weight and length were made. Birth weight was recorded separately. Information about demographic conditions, education, occupation and economic conditions of persons and households was obtained from household surveys. Fractional Polynomial models and standard statistical methods were used for description and analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Urban infants have higher birth weight and gain weight faster than rural infants. The mean birth weight for urban boys and girls were 3,298 grams and 3,203 grams as compared to 3,105 grams and 3,057 grams for rural children. At 90 days, the urban boys were estimated to be 4.1% heavier than rural boys. This difference increased to 7.2% at 360 days. The corresponding difference for girls was 3.4% and 10.5%. The differences for length were comparatively smaller. Both birth weight and growth were statistically significantly and positively associated with economic conditions and mother education.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Birth weight was lower and the growth, weight and length, considerably slower in the rural area, for boys as well as for girls. The results support the hypothesis that the rather drastic differences in maternal education and economic conditions lead to poor nutrition for mothers and children in turn causing inferior birth weight and growth.</p

    The T cell differentiation landscape is shaped by tumour mutations in lung cancer

    Tumour mutational burden (TMB) predicts immunotherapy outcome in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), consistent with immune recognition of tumour neoantigens. However, persistent antigen exposure is detrimental for T cell function. How TMB affects CD4 and CD8 T cell differentiation in untreated tumours and whether this affects patient outcomes is unknown. Here, we paired high-dimensional flow cytometry, exome, single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing from patients with resected, untreated NSCLC to examine these relationships. TMB was associated with compartment-wide T cell differentiation skewing, characterized by loss of TCF7-expressing progenitor-like CD4 T cells, and an increased abundance of dysfunctional CD8 and CD4 T cell subsets with strong phenotypic and transcriptional similarity to neoantigen-reactive CD8 T cells. A gene signature of redistribution from progenitor-like to dysfunctional states was associated with poor survival in lung and other cancer cohorts. Single-cell characterization of these populations informs potential strategies for therapeutic manipulation in NSCLC

    Carnivore Translocations and Conservation: Insights from Population Models and Field Data for Fishers (Martes pennanti)

    Translocations are frequently used to restore extirpated carnivore populations. Understanding the factors that influence translocation success is important because carnivore translocations can be time consuming, expensive, and controversial. Using population viability software, we modeled reintroductions of the fisher, a candidate for endangered or threatened status in the Pacific states of the US. Our model predicts that the most important factor influencing successful re-establishment of a fisher population is the number of adult females reintroduced (provided some males are also released). Data from 38 translocations of fishers in North America, including 30 reintroductions, 5 augmentations and 3 introductions, show that the number of females released was, indeed, a good predictor of success but that the number of males released, geographic region and proximity of the source population to the release site were also important predictors. The contradiction between model and data regarding males may relate to the assumption in the model that all males are equally good breeders. We hypothesize that many males may need to be released to insure a sufficient number of good breeders are included, probably large males. Seventy-seven percent of reintroductions with known outcomes (success or failure) succeeded; all 5 augmentations succeeded; but none of the 3 introductions succeeded. Reintroductions were instrumental in reestablishing fisher populations within their historical range and expanding the range from its most-contracted state (43% of the historical range) to its current state (68% of the historical range). To increase the likelihood of translocation success, we recommend that managers: 1) release as many fishers as possible, 2) release more females than males (55–60% females) when possible, 3) release as many adults as possible, especially large males, 4) release fishers from a nearby source population, 5) conduct a formal feasibility assessment, and 6) develop a comprehensive implementation plan that includes an active monitoring program

    Fc Effector Function Contributes to the Activity of Human Anti-CTLA-4 Antibodies.

    With the use of a mouse model expressing human Fc-gamma receptors (FcγRs), we demonstrated that antibodies with isotypes equivalent to ipilimumab and tremelimumab mediate intra-tumoral regulatory T (Treg) cell depletion in vivo, increasing the CD8+ to Treg cell ratio and promoting tumor rejection. Antibodies with improved FcγR binding profiles drove superior anti-tumor responses and survival. In patients with advanced melanoma, response to ipilimumab was associated with the CD16a-V158F high affinity polymorphism. Such activity only appeared relevant in the context of inflamed tumors, explaining the modest response rates observed in the clinical setting. Our data suggest that the activity of anti-CTLA-4 in inflamed tumors may be improved through enhancement of FcγR binding, whereas poorly infiltrated tumors will likely require combination approaches
