The Pine Needle, Fall 1948
Libraries and archives collect materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. As a result, materials such as those presented here may reflect sexist, misogynistic, abusive, racist, or discriminatory attitudes or actions that some may find disturbing, harmful, or difficult to view.
Both a humor and literary magazine, The Pine Needle was a University of Maine student-produced periodical that began publication in the fall of 1946, the first post-World War II semester that saw GIs returning to campus.
The Needle reflected an edginess and rebellion not found in previous UMaine student publications. While past student publications relied on euphemisms for alcohol and dating on campus, The Needle openly promoted the sexualization of co-eds and the use of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol by students who experienced war.

Don Caswell (1923-2014), was a native of Limestone, Maine and grew up in Brownsville. He joined the U.S. Navy following high school graduation in 1942. He served as a radio operator aboard ships patrolling the Gulf of Alaska throughout the war. Caswell attended the University of Maine on the G.I. Bill, majoring in Art and History. On campus, he was active in the Officer Training Program and was stationed in Tripoli, North Africa as a U.S. Air Force officer during the Korean War. Caswell served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard
Global Symmetries and D-Terms in Supersymmetric Field Theories
We study the role of D-terms in supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. By carefully
analyzing the SUSY multiplets containing various conserved currents in theories
with global symmetries, we obtain a number of constraints on the
renormalization group flow in supersymmetric field theories. Under broad
assumptions, these results imply that there are no SUSY-breaking vacua, not
even metastable ones, with parametrically large D-terms. This explains the
absence of such D-terms in models of dynamical SUSY-breaking. There is,
however, a rich class of calculable models which generate comparable D-terms
and F-terms through a variety of non-perturbative effects; these D-terms can be
non-abelian. We give several explicit examples of such models, one of which is

Momentum asymmetries as CP violating observables
Three body decays can exhibit CP violation that arises from interfering
diagrams with different orderings of the final state particles. We construct
several momentum asymmetry observables that are accessible in a hadron collider
environment where some of the final state particles are not reconstructed and
not all the kinematic information can be extracted. We discuss the
complications that arise from the different possible production mechanisms of
the decaying particle. Examples involving heavy neutralino decays in
supersymmetric theories and heavy Majorana neutrino decays in Type-I seesaw

General Gauge Mediation with Gauge Messengers
We generalize the General Gauge Mediation formalism to allow for the
possibility of gauge messengers. Gauge messengers occur when charged matter
fields of the susy-breaking sector have non-zero F-terms, which leads to
tree-level, susy-breaking mass splittings in the gauge fields. A classic
example is that SU(5) / SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge fields could be gauge
messengers. We give a completely general, model independent, current-algebra
based analysis of gauge messenger mediation of susy-breaking to the visible
sector. Characteristic aspects of gauge messengers include enhanced
contributions to gaugino masses, (tachyonic) sfermion mass-squareds generated
already at one loop, and also at two loops, and significant one-loop A-terms,
already at the messenger scale.Comment: 79 pages, 5 figure
Soft Terms from Broken Symmetries
In theories of phyiscs beyond the Standard Model (SM), visible sector fields
often carry quantum numbers under additional gauge symmetries. One could then
imagine a scenario in which these extra gauge symmetries play a role in
transmitting supersymmetry breaking from a hidden sector to the Supersymmetric
Standard Model (SSM). In this paper we present a general formalism for studying
the resulting hidden sectors and calculating the corresponding gauge mediated
soft parameters. We find that a large class of generic models features a
leading universal contribution to the soft scalar masses that only depends on
the scale of Higgsing, even if the model is strongly coupled. As a by-product
of our analysis, we elucidate some IR aspects of the correlation functions in
General Gauge Mediation. We also discuss possible phenomenological

Primary Coenzyme Q Deficiency in Pdss2 Mutant Mice Causes Isolated Renal Disease
Coenzyme Q (CoQ) is an essential electron carrier in the respiratory chain whose deficiency has been implicated in a wide variety of human mitochondrial disease manifestations. Its multi-step biosynthesis involves production of polyisoprenoid diphosphate in a reaction that requires the enzymes be encoded by PDSS1 and PDSS2. Homozygous mutations in either of these genes, in humans, lead to severe neuromuscular disease, with nephrotic syndrome seen in PDSS2 deficiency. We now show that a presumed autoimmune kidney disease in mice with the missense Pdss2kd/kd genotype can be attributed to a mitochondrial CoQ biosynthetic defect. Levels of CoQ9 and CoQ10 in kidney homogenates from B6.Pdss2kd/kd mutants were significantly lower than those in B6 control mice. Disease manifestations originate specifically in glomerular podocytes, as renal disease is seen in Podocin/cre,Pdss2loxP/loxP knockout mice but not in conditional knockouts targeted to renal tubular epithelium, monocytes, or hepatocytes. Liver-conditional B6.Alb/cre,Pdss2loxP/loxP knockout mice have no overt disease despite demonstration that their livers have undetectable CoQ9 levels, impaired respiratory capacity, and significantly altered intermediary metabolism as evidenced by transcriptional profiling and amino acid quantitation. These data suggest that disease manifestations of CoQ deficiency relate to tissue-specific respiratory capacity thresholds, with glomerular podocytes displaying the greatest sensitivity to Pdss2 impairment
Biological flora of Central europe: Baldellia ranunculoides (Alismataceae)
Baldellia ranunculoides (L.) Parl. (Alismataceae) is a taxonomically problematic aquatic plant with an historically ill-defined distribution and global conservation status. This paper finds morphological, ecological and molecular evidence for two distinct taxa, probably best described as subspecies: (1) B. ranunculoides subsp. ranunculoides and (2) B. ranunculoides subsp. repens and provides detailed distribution data on their overlapping range, in different habitats, across the cool, high rainfall areas of western Europe and west Mediterranean. The two subspecies are amongst the relatively large number of threatened European and north Africa aquatic plants and this paper provides a systematic review of their relative conservation pressures and management needs, with particular emphasis on the status of both taxa in central Europe. Other observations indicate probable evolutionary relationships within B. ranunculoides s.l. and its associated taxa and the review points out where these and other research topics could potentially be pursued
An overview of tissue engineering approaches for management of spinal cord injuries
Severe spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to devastating neurological deficits and disabilities, which necessitates spending a great deal of health budget for psychological and healthcare problems of these patients and their relatives. This justifies the cost of research into the new modalities for treatment of spinal cord injuries, even in developing countries. Apart from surgical management and nerve grafting, several other approaches have been adopted for management of this condition including pharmacologic and gene therapy, cell therapy, and use of different cell-free or cell-seeded bioscaffolds. In current paper, the recent developments for therapeutic delivery of stem and non-stem cells to the site of injury, and application of cell-free and cell-seeded natural and synthetic scaffolds have been reviewed
Towards a muon collider
A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work
