Distinguishing noise from chaos: objective versus subjective criteria using Horizontal Visibility Graph

    Get PDF
A recently proposed methodology called the Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) [Luque {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E., 80, 046103 (2009)] that constitutes a geometrical simplification of the well known Visibility Graph algorithm [Lacasa {\it et al.\/}, Proc. Natl. Sci. U.S.A. 105, 4972 (2008)], has been used to study the distinction between deterministic and stochastic components in time series [L. Lacasa and R. Toral, Phys. Rev. E., 82, 036120 (2010)]. Specifically, the authors propose that the node degree distribution of these processes follows an exponential functional of the form P(κ)exp(λ κ)P(\kappa)\sim \exp(-\lambda~\kappa), in which κ\kappa is the node degree and λ\lambda is a positive parameter able to distinguish between deterministic (chaotic) and stochastic (uncorrelated and correlated) dynamics. In this work, we investigate the characteristics of the node degree distributions constructed by using HVG, for time series corresponding to 2828 chaotic maps and 33 different stochastic processes. We thoroughly study the methodology proposed by Lacasa and Toral finding several cases for which their hypothesis is not valid. We propose a methodology that uses the HVG together with Information Theory quantifiers. An extensive and careful analysis of the node degree distributions obtained by applying HVG allow us to conclude that the Fisher-Shannon information plane is a remarkable tool able to graphically represent the different nature, deterministic or stochastic, of the systems under study.Comment: Submitted to PLOS On

    Get PDF
Mathematical cost models previously developed for hybrid microelectronic subsystems were refined and expanded. Rework terms related to substrate fabrication, nonrecurring developmental and manufacturing operations, and prototype production are included. Sample computer programs were written to demonstrate hybrid microelectric applications of these cost models. Computer programs were generated to calculate and analyze values for the total microelectronics costs. Large scale integrated (LST) chips utilizing tape chip carrier technology were studied. The feasibility of interconnecting arrays of LSU chips utilizing tape chip carrier and semiautomatic wire bonding technology was demonstrated

Biological evaluation and molecular modelling of didanosine derivatives

Five carbonate derivatives of 50-O-20,30-dideoxyinosine (DDI, 1) have been synthesized by combination with aliphatic alcohols, with their in vitro anti-HIV activity and cytotoxicity being evaluated afterward in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). One particular compound, namely DDI-Penta, exhibited an outstanding performance because it was found to have both a higher inhibitory potency and a lower cytotoxicity than the lead compound, resulting in a 100 enhancement in its selectivity index. In order to further study this phenomenon, the ability of these derivatives to bind to the cytoplasmatic nucleotidase (ncN-II) was studied by in silico methods. Also, the higher calculated lipophilicity of the synthesized compounds was proposed to improve their permeability through the cell membrane since said lipophilicity would allow a higher concentration of the corresponding prodrug inside the infected cell. Overall, a combination of an optimal lipophilicity and the ability of DDI-Penta to bind to ncN-II is suggested due to the higher potency and lower cytotoxicity observed for this compound. Based on the reported findings, we believe that the combination of certain aliphatic alcohols and DDI through a carbonate linkage could significantly increase the performance of this class of therapeutic compounds; therefore, it merits further evaluations.Fil: Ravetti, Soledad. Shelf-Life Prediction of Extra Virgin Olive Oils Using an Empirical Model Based on Standard Quality Tests

    Get PDF
Extra virgin olive oil shelf-life could be defined as the length of time under normal storage conditions within which no off-flavours or defects are developed and quality parameters such as peroxide value and specific absorbance are retained within accepted limits for this commercial category. Prediction of shelf-life is a desirable goal in the food industry. Even when extra virgin olive oil shelf-life should be one of the most important quality markers for extra virgin olive oil, it is not recognised as a legal parameter in most regulations and standards around the world. The proposed empirical formula to be evaluated in the present study is based on common quality tests with known and predictable result changes over time and influenced by different aspects of extra virgin olive oil with a meaningful influence over its shelf-life. The basic quality tests considered in the formula are Rancimat® or induction time (IND); 1,2-diacylglycerols (DAGs); pyropheophytin a (PPP); and free fatty acids (FFA). This paper reports research into the actual shelf-life of commercially packaged extra virgin olive oils versus the predicted shelf-life of those oils determined by analysing the expected deterioration curves for the three basic quality tests detailed above. Based on the proposed model, shelf-life is predicted by choosing the lowest predicted shelf-life of any of those three tests

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7992.2016v23n1p160Focused on the novel Dormir al sol (1973), by Adolfo Bioy Casares, this essay analyses the productivity of heuristics and ethical suggestions in this work. It takes the theory and practice of the science fiction novel as a reference. This literary heuristics by Bioy Casares can be thought of as an aesthetic that pursues the representation of an ethical performance within the speculative dimension of science fiction. In this sense, and to orientate the reflection I propose here, the question is: what is the ethical performance, in the novel, and why it could be so called?

    Get PDF
