Transient Tribo-Dynamics of Thermo-Elastic Compliant High-Performance Piston Skirts
Advanced piston technology for motorsport applications is driven through development of lightweight pistons with preferentially compliant short partial skirts. The preferential compliance is achieved through structural stiffening, such that a greater entrainment wedge is achieved at the skirt’s bottom edge through thermo-elastic deformation, whilst better conforming contact geometry at the top of the skirt. In practice, the combination of some of these conditions is intended to improve the load-carrying capacity and reduce friction. The approach is fundamental to the underlying ethos of race and high-performance engine technology. Contact loads of the order of 5 kN and contact kinematics in the range 0–35 m/s result in harsh transient tribological conditions. Therefore, piston design requires detailed transient analysis, which integrates piston dynamics, thermo-elastic distortion and transient elastohydrodynamics. The paper provides such a detailed analysis as well as verification of the same using non-invasive ultrasonic-assisted lubricant film thickness measurement from a fired engine under normal operating conditions, an approach not hitherto reported in literature. Good agreement is noted between measured film thickness and predictions
Selective enzymatic lipophilization of anthocyanin glucosides from blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) skin extract and characterization of esterified anthocyanins
Anthocyanins (ANC) are hydrophilic and water-soluble polyphenolic plant pigments. The current barriers to successful application of ANC in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries are predominantly related to performance, stability, formulation properties, and color. Enzymatic acylation of ANC could increase their stability without compromising bioactivity and chromatic features. Lipophilization of ANC-rich blackcurrant skin extract with Candida antarctica lipase B and octanoic acid was selective to cyanidin and delphinidin glucosides, but not the corresponding rutinosides. The reaction was chemo- and regioselective for acylation at the primary alcohol of the glucose moieties, greatly facilitating separation of the different glycoside derivatives
‘Trendy’ cities: exploring the adoption of different types of social media by Portuguese municipalities
What are the determinants of social media adoption by local government? This ongoing research provides a tentative answer to this question by analysing the 308 municipalities in Portugal. Extending previous analyses of Facebook and/or Twitter usage levels, we examine why local governments adopt a particular social media platform. More concretely, we explore, with statistical analyses, the determinants of the adoption of different types of social media. We investigate the adoption of three extremely popular social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) as well as possible alternatives to those, more popular, applications. Since these platforms have distinct natures and can serve diverse purposes, we examine to what extent aspects such as local government’s commitment to transparency and participation, administrative capacity, media landscape, and socio-demographic and economic factors can explain the adoption of certain social media platforms. The results show that, indeed, demographic characteristics and administrative capacity are important factors for the adoption of less popular social media. Is There an Optimal Ischaemic Preconditioning Dose to Improve Cycling Performance?
INTRODUCTION: Ischaemic preconditioning (IPC) may enhance endurance performance. No previous study has directly compared distinct IPC protocols for optimal benefit. The aim of this study was to determine whether a specific IPC protocol (i.e. number of cycles, amount of muscle tissue, and local vs remote occlusion) elicits greater performance outcome. METHODS: Twelve cyclists performed five different IPC protocols 30-min prior to a blinded 375 kJ cycling time trial (TT) in a laboratory. Responses to traditional IPC (4x5-min legs) were compared to: i. 8x5-min legs and SHAM ("dose-cycles"), ii. 4x5-min unilateral legs ("dose-tissue"), and iii. 4x5-min arms ("remote"). RPE and blood lactate were recorded at each 25% TT completion. Power (watts), heart rate (bpm), and V̇O2 (ml.kg.min(-1)) were measured continuously throughout TT's. Magnitude based inference statistics were employed to compare variable differences to the minimal practically important difference. RESULTS: Traditional IPC was associated with a 17 (0, 34) secs faster TT time compared to SHAM. Applying more "dose-cycles" (8x5-min) had no impact on performance. Traditional IPC was associated with "likely trivial" higher blood lactate and "possibly beneficial" lower V̇O2 responses vs. SHAM. Unilateral IPC was associated with 18 (-11, 48) secs slower performance compared to bilateral ("dose-tissue"). TT times following remote and local IPC were not different [0 (-16, 16) secs]. CONCLUSION: The traditional 4x5-min (local or remote) IPC stimulus resulted in the fastest TT time compared to SHAM, there was no benefit of applying a greater number of cycles or employing unilateral IPC

Charged-Higgs phenomenology in the Aligned two-Higgs-doublet model
The alignment in flavour space of the Yukawa matrices of a general
two-Higgs-doublet model results in the absence of tree-level flavour-changing
neutral currents. In addition to the usual fermion masses and mixings, the
aligned Yukawa structure only contains three complex parameters, which are
potential new sources of CP violation. For particular values of these three
parameters all known specific implementations of the model based on discrete
Z_2 symmetries are recovered. One of the most distinctive features of the
two-Higgs-doublet model is the presence of a charged scalar. In this work, we
discuss its main phenomenological consequences in flavour-changing processes at
low energies and derive the corresponding constraints on the parameters of the

Decoupling property of the supersymmetric Higgs sector with four doublets
In supersymmetric standard models with multi Higgs doublet fields,
selfcoupling constants in the Higgs potential come only from the D-terms at the
tree level. We investigate the decoupling property of additional two heavier
Higgs doublet fields in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs
doublets. In particular, we study how they can modify the predictions on the
quantities well predicted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM),
when the extra doublet fields are rather heavy to be measured at collider
experiments. The B-term mixing between these extra heavy Higgs bosons and the
relatively light MSSM-like Higgs bosons can significantly change the
predictions in the MSSM such as on the masses of MSSM-like Higgs bosons as well
as the mixing angle for the two light CP-even scalar states. We first give
formulae for deviations in the observables of the MSSM in the decoupling region
for the extra two doublet fields. We then examine possible deviations in the
