Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) single crystals
Anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystalline RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La,
Ce and Pr) compounds are reported. LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} exhibit a Pauli-paramagnetic
behavior whereas CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} and PrAu_{2}Ge_{2} show an antiferromagnetic
ordering with N\grave{e}el temperatures T_{N} = 13.5 and 9 K, respectively. The
anisotropic magnetic response of Ce and Pr compounds establishes [001] as the
easy axis of magnetization and a sharp spin-flip type metamagnetic transition
is observed in the magnetic isotherms. The resistance and magnetoresistance
behavior of these compounds, in particular LaAu_{2}Ge_{2}, indicate an
anisotropic Fermi surface. The magnetoresistivity of CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} apparently
reveals the presence of a residual Kondo interaction. A crystal electric field
analysis of the anisotropic susceptibility in conjunction with the
experimentally inferred Schottky heat capacity enables us to propose a crystal
electric field level scheme for Ce and Pr compounds. For CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} our
values are in excellent agreement with the previous reports on neutron
diffraction. The heat capacity data in LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} show clearly the
existence of Einstein contribution to the heat capacity.Comment: Submitted to PRB 11 Pages 13 Figure
Quantitative evaluation of experimental choroidal neovascularization by confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy: fluorescein angiogram parallels heparan sulfate proteoglycan expression
The objective of the present study was to develop a quantitative method to evaluate laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in a rat model using Heidelberg Retina Angiograph 2 (HRA2) imaging. The expression of two heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) related to inflammation and angiogenesis was also investigated. CNV lesions were induced with argon laser in 21 heterozygous Zucker rats and after three weeks a fluorescein angiogram and autofluorescence exams were performed using HRA2. The area and greatest linear dimension were measured by two observers not aware of the protocol. Bland-Altman plots showed agreement between the observers, suggesting that the technique was reproducible. After fluorescein angiogram, HSPG (perlecan and syndecan-4) were analyzed by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. There was a significant increase in the expression of perlecan and syndecan-4 (P < 0.0001) in retinas bearing CNV lesions compared to control retinas. The expression of these two HSPG increased with increasing CNV area. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the rat retina damaged with laser shots presented increased expression of perlecan and syndecan-4. Moreover, we observed that the overexpression occurred in the outer layer of the retina, which is related to choroidal damage. It was possible to develop a standardized quantitative method to evaluate CNV in a rat model using HRA2. In addition, we presented data indicating that the expression of HSPG parallels the area of CNV lesion. The understanding of these events offers opportunities for studies of new therapeutic interventions targeting these HSPG.Universidade Federal de SĂŁo Paulo (UNIFESP) Departamento de OftalmologiaUniversidade Federal de SĂŁo Paulo (UNIFESP) Departamento de BioquĂmicaUNIFESP, Depto. de OftalmologiaUNIFESP, Depto. de BioquĂmicaSciEL
Towards unified understanding of conductance of stretched monatomic contacts
When monatomic contacts are stretched, their conductance behaves in
qualitatively different ways depending on their constituent atomic elements.
Under a single assumption of resonance formation, we show that various
conductance behavior can be understood in a unified way in terms of the
response of the resonance to stretching. This analysis clarifies the crucial
roles played by the number of valence electrons, charge neutrality, and orbital
shapes.Comment: 2 figure
Some anisotropic universes in the presence of imperfect fluid coupling with spatial curvature
We consider Bianchi VI spacetime, which also can be reduced to Bianchi types
VI0-V-III-I. We initially consider the most general form of the energy-momentum
tensor which yields anisotropic stress and heat flow. We then derive an
energy-momentum tensor that couples with the spatial curvature in a way so as
to cancel out the terms that arise due to the spatial curvature in the
evolution equations of the Einstein field equations. We obtain exact solutions
for the universes indefinetly expanding with constant mean deceleration
parameter. The solutions are beriefly discussed for each Bianchi type. The
dynamics of the models and fluid are examined briefly, and the models that can
approach to isotropy are determined. We conclude that even if the observed
universe is almost isotropic, this does not necessarily imply the isotropy of
the fluid (e.g., dark energy) affecting the evolution of the universe within
the context of general relativity.Comment: 17 pages, no figures; to appear in International Journal of

Electric charge quantization and the muon anomalous magnetic moment
We investigate some proposals to solve the electric charge quantization
puzzle, which simultaneously explain the recent measured deviation on the muon
anomalous magnetic moment. For this we assess extensions of the Electro-Weak
Standard Model spanning modifications on the scalar sector only. It is
interesting to verify that one can have modest extensions which easily account
for the solution for both problems.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figures, needs macro axodraw.st

The First Magnetic Fields
We review current ideas on the origin of galactic and extragalactic magnetic
fields. We begin by summarizing observations of magnetic fields at cosmological
redshifts and on cosmological scales. These observations translate into
constraints on the strength and scale magnetic fields must have during the
early stages of galaxy formation in order to seed the galactic dynamo. We
examine mechanisms for the generation of magnetic fields that operate prior
during inflation and during subsequent phase transitions such as electroweak
symmetry breaking and the quark-hadron phase transition. The implications of
strong primordial magnetic fields for the reionization epoch as well as the
first generation of stars is discussed in detail. The exotic, early-Universe
mechanisms are contrasted with astrophysical processes that generate fields
after recombination. For example, a Biermann-type battery can operate in a
proto-galaxy during the early stages of structure formation. Moreover, magnetic
fields in either an early generation of stars or active galactic nuclei can be
dispersed into the intergalactic medium.Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews. Pdf can be also

Quality control for the first large areas of triple-GEM chambers for the CMS endcaps
The CMS Collaboration plans to equip the very forward muon system with triple-GEM detectors that can withstand the environment of the High-Luminosity LHC.This project is at the final stages of R&D and moving to production. A large area of several 100 m 2 are to be instrumented with GEM detectors which will be produced in six different sites around the world. A common construction and quality control procedure is required to ensure the performance of each detector. The quality control steps will include optical inspection, cleaning and baking of all materials and parts used to build the detector, leakage current tests of the GEM foils, high voltage tests, gas leak tests of the chambers and monitoring pressures time, gain calibration to know the optimal operation region of the detector, gain uniformity tests, and studying the efficiency, noise and tracking performance of the detectors in a cosmic stand using scintillator
Measurement of the branching fraction
The branching fraction is measured in a data sample
corresponding to 0.41 of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb
detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions
affecting the sin2 measurement from The
time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be . This is the most precise measurement to
