Jogo educativo sobre drogas para cegos: construção e avaliação
Estudo realizado com o objetivo de construir e avaliar um jogo educativo sobre drogas psicoativas acessĂvel a pessoas cegas, desenvolvido em trĂŞs etapas: construção do jogo educativo, avaliação por trĂŞs especialistas em educação especial e doze cegos. Foi construĂdo um jogo de tabuleiro denominado Drogas: jogando limpo . Na VersĂŁo Alfa os especialistas fizeram sugestões em relação Ă s e instruções e ao tabuleiro: textura das casas, peças do jogo e escrita em Braille. Na VersĂŁo Beta, procedeu-se Ă avaliação pelos cegos, os quais sugeriram alterações na textura das casas e colocação de velcro para fixação do pino no tabuleiro. Passou-se, entĂŁo, Ă VersĂŁo Gama, jogada pelas Ăşltimas trĂŞs duplas de cegos e considerada adequada. Na avaliação dos juĂzes, o jogo revelou-se adequado, pois permite o acesso Ă informação sobre drogas psicoativas de maneira lĂşdica
Determinants of the exclusive breastfeeding abandonment: psychosocial factors
OBJECTIVE To assess the determinants of exclusive breastfeeding abandonment. METHODS Longitudinal study based on a birth cohort in Viçosa, MG, Southeastern Brazil. In 2011/2012, 168 new mothers accessing the public health network were followed. Three interviews, at 30, 60, and 120 days postpartum, with the new mothers were conducted. Exclusive breastfeeding abandonment was analyzed in the first, second, and fourth months after childbirth. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was applied to identify depressive symptoms in the first and second meetings, with a score of ≥ 12 considered as the cutoff point. Socioeconomic, demographic, and obstetric variables were investigated, along with emotional conditions and the new mothers’ social network during pregnancy and the postpartum period. RESULTS The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding abandonment at 30, 60, and 120 days postpartum was 53.6% (n = 90), 47.6% (n = 80), and 69.6% (n = 117), respectively, and its incidence in the fourth month compared with the first was 48.7%. Depressive symptoms and traumatic delivery were associated with exclusive breastfeeding abandonment in the second month after childbirth. In the fourth month, the following variables were significant: lower maternal education levels, lack of homeownership, returning to work, not receiving guidance on breastfeeding in the postpartum period, mother’s negative reaction to the news of pregnancy, and not receiving assistance from their partners for infant care. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial and sociodemographic factors were strong predictors of early exclusive breastfeeding abandonment. Therefore, it is necessary to identify and provide early treatment to nursing mothers with depressive symptoms, decreasing the associated morbidity and promoting greater duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Support from health professionals, as well as that received at home and at work, can assist in this process
A meta-analysis of long-term effects of conservation agriculture on maize grain yield under rain-fed conditions
Conservation agriculture involves reduced tillage, permanent soil cover and crop rotations to enhance soil fertility and to supply food from a dwindling land resource. Recently, conservation agriculture has been promoted in Southern Africa, mainly for maize-based farming systems. However, maize yields under rain-fed conditions are often variable. There is therefore a need to identify factors that influence crop yield under conservation agriculture and rain-fed conditions. Here, we studied maize grain yield data from experiments lasting 5 years and more under rain-fed conditions. We assessed the effect of long-term tillage and residue retention on maize grain yield under contrasting soil textures, nitrogen input and climate. Yield variability was measured by stability analysis. Our results show an increase in maize yield over time with conservation agriculture practices that include rotation and high input use in low rainfall areas. But we observed no difference in system stability under those conditions. We observed a strong relationship between maize grain yield and annual rainfall. Our meta-analysis gave the following findings: (1) 92% of the data show that mulch cover in high rainfall areas leads to lower yields due to waterlogging; (2) 85% of data show that soil texture is important in the temporal development of conservation agriculture effects, improved yields are likely on well-drained soils; (3) 73% of the data show that conservation agriculture practices require high inputs especially N for improved yield; (4) 63% of data show that increased yields are obtained with rotation but calculations often do not include the variations in rainfall within and between seasons; (5) 56% of the data show that reduced tillage with no mulch cover leads to lower yields in semi-arid areas; and (6) when adequate fertiliser is available, rainfall is the most important determinant of yield in southern Africa. It is clear from our results that conservation agriculture needs to be targeted and adapted to specific biophysical conditions for improved impact
Facilidades e dificuldades da famĂlia no cuidado Ă criança com paralisia cerebral
Pesquisa qualitativa, exploratĂłria, descritiva, que objetivou apreender as facilidades e as dificuldades da famĂlia nocuidado Ă s crianças com paralisia cerebral. Os dados foram coletados com sete famĂlias, entre março e abril de 2009,por meio de entrevista semiestruturada. A análise seguiu os princĂpios da interpretação temática. As dificuldades sĂŁomais evidenciadas que as facilidades e trazem repercussões nas atividades de vida diária. Lidar com convulsões dedifĂcil controle, espasticidade, alterações de tĂ´nus postural, presença de reflexos primitivos implicam na complexidadeem tarefas simples, como alimentação, banho, locomoção, pois as crianças ficam, cada dia, mais dependentes doscuidadores. Com o tempo, as dificuldades cedem lugar Ă rotina e Ă adaptação Ă vida diária da criança. Estreitarrelações com a famĂlia, melhorando o vĂnculo e desenvolvendo ações de qualidade e integrais, promovem o bemestarda famĂlia/criança com paralisia cerebral
Unexpected high diversity of galling insects in the Amazonian upper canopy: The savanna out there
A relatively large number of studies reassert the strong relationship between galling insect diversity and extreme hydric and thermal status in some habitats, and an overall pattern of a greater number of galling species in the understory of scleromorphic vegetation. We compared galling insect diversity in the forest canopy and its relationship with tree richness among upland terra firme, várzea, and igapó floodplains in Amazonia, Brazil. The soils of these forest types have highly different hydric and nutritional status. Overall, we examined the upper layer of 1,091 tree crowns. Galling species richness and abundance were higher in terra firme forests compared to várzea and igapó forests. GLM-ANCOVA models revealed that the number of tree species sampled in each forest type was determinant in the gall-forming insect diversity. The ratio between galling insect richness and number of tree species sampled (GIR/TSS ratio) was higher in the terra firme forest and in seasonally flooded igapó, while the várzea presented the lowest GIR/TSS ratio. In this study, we recorded unprecedented values of galling species diversity and abundance per sampling point. The GIR/TSS ratio from várzea was approximately 2.5 times higher than the highest value of this ratio ever reported in the literature. Based on this fact, we ascertained that várzea and igapó floodplain forests (with lower GIA and GIR), together with the speciose terra firme galling community emerge as the gall diversity apex landscape among all biogeographic regions already investigated. Contrary to expectation, our results also support the "harsh environment hypothesis", and unveil the Amazonian upper canopy as similar to vegetation habitats, hygrothermically stressed environments with temperature at lethal limits and high levels of leaf sclerophylly. © 2014 Julião et al
INFLUENCE OF CROWN SHAPE ON ROOT COVERAGE THERAPY
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the crown shape on the outcomes of root coverage procedures. Material and methods: Eighty patients with Miller class I gingival recessions in maxillary canines or premolars were selected. The recession areas were treated using the subepithelial connective tissue grafting. The following clinical parameters were analyzed: crown length (CL) and width (CW), recession height and width, probing depth, clinical attachment level, width and thickness of the keratinized tissue and percentage of root coverage achieved. These measurements were recorded at baseline and 6 months after the surgical procedure. The CW/CL ratio was calculated for each tooth and the median obtained (0.83). Patients were then ranked into two groups, according to the shape of the tooth with gingival recession: Group A - square crown shape (CW/CL values above 0.83) and Group B - long and narrow crown shape (CW/CL values below 0.83). Results: No statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found between groups in any of the clinical parameters at baseline. After 6 months, both groups presented improved clinical outcomes for all parameters analyzed compared to baseline (p>0.05). The mean percentages and standard deviations of root coverage achieved in Group A and Group B was 91.37 (16.75) and 85.49 (23.55), respectively (p>0.05). Conclusions: Crown shape did not influence the root coverage obtained with the subepithelial connective tissue graft technique.17433033
