    Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 354 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Background: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017) includes a comprehensive assessment of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 354 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Previous GBD studies have shown how the decline of mortality rates from 1990 to 2016 has led to an increase in life expectancy, an ageing global population, and an expansion of the non-fatal burden of disease and injury. These studies have also shown how a substantial portion of the world's population experiences non-fatal health loss with considerable heterogeneity among different causes, locations, ages, and sexes. Ongoing objectives of the GBD study include increasing the level of estimation detail, improving analytical strategies, and increasing the amount of high-quality data. Methods: We estimated incidence and prevalence for 354 diseases and injuries and 3484 sequelae. We used an updated and extensive body of literature studies, survey data, surveillance data, inpatient admission records, outpatient visit records, and health insurance claims, and additionally used results from cause of death models to inform estimates using a total of 68 781 data sources. Newly available clinical data from India, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Nepal, China, Brazil, Norway, and Italy were incorporated, as well as updated claims data from the USA and new claims data from Taiwan (province of China) and Singapore. We used DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, as the main method of estimation, ensuring consistency between rates of incidence, prevalence, remission, and cause of death for each condition. YLDs were estimated as the product of a prevalence estimate and a disability weight for health states of each mutually exclusive sequela, adjusted for comorbidity. We updated the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a summary development indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and total fertility rate. Additionally, we calculated differences between male and female YLDs to identify divergent trends across sexes. GBD 2017 complies with the Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting. Findings: Globally, for females, the causes with the greatest age-standardised prevalence were oral disorders, headache disorders, and haemoglobinopathies and haemolytic anaemias in both 1990 and 2017. For males, the causes with the greatest age-standardised prevalence were oral disorders, headache disorders, and tuberculosis including latent tuberculosis infection in both 1990 and 2017. In terms of YLDs, low back pain, headache disorders, and dietary iron deficiency were the leading Level 3 causes of YLD counts in 1990, whereas low back pain, headache disorders, and depressive disorders were the leading causes in 2017 for both sexes combined. All-cause age-standardised YLD rates decreased by 3·9% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 3·1–4·6) from 1990 to 2017; however, the all-age YLD rate increased by 7·2% (6·0–8·4) while the total sum of global YLDs increased from 562 million (421–723) to 853 million (642–1100). The increases for males and females were similar, with increases in all-age YLD rates of 7·9% (6·6–9·2) for males and 6·5% (5·4–7·7) for females. We found significant differences between males and females in terms of age-standardised prevalence estimates for multiple causes. The causes with the greatest relative differences between sexes in 2017 included substance use disorders (3018 cases [95% UI 2782–3252] per 100 000 in males vs s1400 [1279–1524] per 100 000 in females), transport injuries (3322 [3082–3583] vs 2336 [2154–2535]), and self-harm and interpersonal violence (3265 [2943–3630] vs 5643 [5057–6302]). Interpretation: Global all-cause age-standardised YLD rates have improved only slightly over a period spanning nearly three decades. However, the magnitude of the non-fatal disease burden has expanded globally, with increasing numbers of people who have a wide spectrum of conditions. A subset of conditions has remained globally pervasive since 1990, whereas other conditions have displayed more dynamic trends, with different ages, sexes, and geographies across the globe experiencing varying burdens and trends of health loss. This study emphasises how global improvements in premature mortality for select conditions have led to older populations with complex and potentially expensive diseases, yet also highlights global achievements in certain domains of disease and injury

    Precise determination of the B-s(0)-B-s(-0) oscillation frequency

    Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two.     The first study of the angular distribution of μ + μ − pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction p p → γ ∗ / Z + X → ℓ + ℓ − + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1     fb − 1 . The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the Z -boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton

    Search for time-dependent CPCP violation in D0K+KD^0 \to K^+ K^- and D0π+πD^0 \to π^+ π^- decays

    A search for time-dependent violation of the charge-parity symmetry in D0K+KD^0 \to K^+ K^- and D0π+πD^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^- decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb1^{-1}. The D0D^0 meson is required to originate from a D(2010)+D0π+D^*(2010)^+ \to D^0 \pi^+ decay, such that its flavour at production is identified by the charge of the accompanying pion. The slope of the time-dependent asymmetry of the decay rates of D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 mesons into the final states under consideration is measured to be ΔYK+K=(2.3±1.5±0.3)×104\Delta Y_{K^+ K^-} = (-2.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4}, ΔYπ+π=(4.0±2.8±0.4)×104\Delta Y_{\pi^+ \pi^-} = (-4.0 \pm 2.8 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are compatible with the conservation of the charge-parity symmetry at the level of 2 standard deviations and improve the precision by nearly a factor of two

    Corrosion of Nickel-Base Alloys by Supercritical CO2

    Nickel-base alloys were exposed to flowing supercritical CO2 (P = 20MPa) at temperatures of 700 to 1000oC for up to 1000 h. For comparison, 316L stainless steel was similarly exposed at 650oC. To simulate likely service conditions, tubular samples of each alloy were internally pressurised by flowing CO2, inducing hoop stresses up to 35 MPa in the tube walls. Materials tested were Haynes alloys 188, 230 and 282, plus HR120 and HR160. These alloys developed chromia scales and, to different extents, an internal oxidation zone. In addition, chromium-rich carbides precipitated within the alloys. Air aging experiments enabled a distinction between carburisation reactions and carbide precipitation as a result of alloy equilibration. The stainless steel was much less resistant to CO2 attack, rapidly entering breakaway corrosion, developing an external iron-rich oxide scale and internal carburisation. Results are discussed with reference to alloy chromium diffusion and carbon permeation of oxide scales

    In Situ Localization and Strain-Specific Quantification of Azospirillum and Other Diazotrophic Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Using Antibodies and Molecular Probes

    A central issue in the understanding of the interaction and symbiotic function of diazotrophic bacteria with non-leguminous crop plants is detailed knowledge about the localization of the associated diazotrophic bacteria within the plant, their in situ activities in the plant-associated niches, and strain-specific quantification of inoculated bacteria. In addition to the colonization of rhizosphere soil and the rhizoplane, it has become apparent that an endophytic location of a diazotroph would provide it with a higher potential to interact more closely with the plant, particularly with respect to increasing the availability of carbon and energy nutrients derived from the plant, as well as the possibility, in return, of improving the transfer of bacterial-derived metabolites to the plant. Detailed localization of bacteria was successfully performed using fluorescence labeled ribosome-directed oligonucleotide probes in the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) approach coupled to the use of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and via immunolocalization with specific antibodies using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the fate of inoculated bacteria could be traced by using specifically marked strains by applying the genes for the green or red fluorescent protein (GFP, RFP) and β-glucuronidase (GUS). Strain-specific quantification approaches for inoculants based on quantitative PCR using sequence characterized amplified regions (SCARs) and other genomic marker sequences have been developed and successfully applied. In this chapter major achievements and existing obstacles using these high resolution approaches to analyze bacteria in situ are presented together with some basic protocols
