Heterostyly: speciation within a species
Almost all organisms in nature show nonrandom mating to different degrees. Two extreme results of nonrandom mating are speciation and sexual differentiation. Heterostyly is a form of sexual differentiation considered to have evolved to resolve conflicts between male and female functions of hermaphrodite flowers. Our study examines necessary and sufficient conditions for establishment of heterostyly using a configuration individual-based model. Previous models assume invasion of a mutant phenotype into a population with monomorphic wild phenotype. In contrast, our model demonstrates that heterostyly can be established from a population with continuous phenotypic variation, a proposition that requires simpler assumptions than the previous hypotheses. Results of our simulation show that genetic linkage between stigma and anther heights is essential for establishment of heterostyly. Dominance effects on the genes for stamen or stigma heights are not necessary, but they promote evolution of heterostyly. Probability of evolution of heterostyly also depends on the functional relationship between stigma–anther distance and strength of sexual interference, and the distance and probability of pollen deposition success. Effects of an exercise programme with people living with HIV: Research in a disadvantaged setting
This study aimed to analyse the physical health effects of a community based 10-week physical activity programme with people living with HIV. It was developed, implemented and evaluated in a disadvantaged community in South Africa. A pre-post research design was chosen. Major recruitment and adherence challenges resulted in a small sample. Among the 23 participants who took part in both baseline and final testing, compliant participants (n = 12) were compared to non-compliant participants (n = 11). Immunological (CD4, viral load), anthropometric (height, weight, skinfolds and waist to hip ratio), muscular strength (h1RM) and cardiopulmonary fitness (time on treadmill) parameters were measured. The compliant and non-compliant groups were not different at baseline. Muscular strength was the parameter most influenced by compliance with the physical activity programme (F = 4.516, p = 0.047). Weight loss and improvement in cardiopulmonary fitness were restricted by the duration of the programme, compliance and influencing factors (e.g. nutrition, medication). The increase in strength is significant and meaningful in the context, as the participants goals were to look healthy and strong to avoid HIV related stigma. The improvements in appearance were a motivational factor, especially since the changes were made visible in a short time. Practical implications for health promotion are described. More research contextualised in disadvantaged settings is needed.DHE
Learning from a fool: searching for the 'unmanaged' context for radical learning
Drawing on the existing theorizing of organizational learning from a radical perspective, this article attempts to problematize such notion of learning and position it within the existing organizational contexts informed by divergent types of rationality. The study scrutinizes these frameworks with a view to reflect on the potentiality for radical learning to occur within them. In this vein, the conceptual analysis of non-technical and non-marginal notions, namely, ‘spirituality’, ‘luck’ and ‘wisdom’, in different modes of rationality is conducted. This article demonstrates that since the conceptual inclusiveness is entailed by the specificity of sensemaking mechanisms, which these modes employ, the analysed notions can be approached as their litmus paper. The functionalist rationality types are found to be incommensurate with exigencies of the radical context for learning. In pursue of the conducive area for radical learning, the notions of unmanaged organization and the technology of foolishness provide the theoretical frame for the study, and their joint sensemaking context is discussed using examples. This unmanaged space driven by inclusive foolishness is recognized as one that enables the liminal sensemaking processes conducive for radical learning to occur
Metabolically active microbial communities in marine sediment under high-CO2 and low-pH extremes
Sediment-hosting hydrothermal systems in the Okinawa Trough maintain a large amount of liquid, supercritical and hydrate phases of CO2 in the seabed. The emission of CO2 may critically impact the geochemical, geophysical and ecological characteristics of the deep-sea sedimentary environment. So far it remains unclear whether microbial communities that have been detected in such high-CO2 and low-pH habitats are metabolically active, and if so, what the biogeochemical and ecological consequences for the environment are. In this study, RNA-based molecular approaches and radioactive tracer-based respiration rate assays were combined to study the density, diversity and metabolic activity of microbial communities in CO2-seep sediment at the Yonaguni Knoll IV hydrothermal field of the southern Okinawa Trough. In general, the number of microbes decreased sharply with increasing sediment depth and CO2 concentration. Phylogenetic analyses of community structure using reverse-transcribed 16S ribosomal RNA showed that the active microbial community became less diverse with increasing sediment depth and CO2 concentration, indicating that microbial activity and community structure are sensitive to CO2 venting. Analyses of RNA-based pyrosequences and catalyzed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization data revealed that members of the SEEP-SRB2 group within the Deltaproteobacteria and anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME-2a and -2c) were confined to the top seafloor, and active archaea were not detected in deeper sediments (13–30 cm in depth) characterized by high CO2. Measurement of the potential sulfate reduction rate at pH conditions of 3–9 with and without methane in the headspace indicated that acidophilic sulfate reduction possibly occurs in the presence of methane, even at very low pH of 3. These results suggest that some members of the anaerobic methanotrophs and sulfate reducers can adapt to the CO2-seep sedimentary environment; however, CO2 and pH in the deep-sea sediment were found to severely impact the activity and structure of the microbial community
Views and experiences of people with intellectual disabilities regarding intimate relationships: a qualitative metasynthesis
The aims of this review were to systematically identify, critically appraise and synthesize the results of existing qualitative literature exploring the views and experiences of intimate relationships amongst people with intellectual disabilities. Fourteen peer-reviewed articles were identified through a systematic search of eight databases, reference lists, citations, and relevant journals. The identified articles were appraised for quality, then synthesized using a metaethnography approach. No study met all quality criteria and references to ethical approval were often lacking. Interpretation of the findings suggested three key themes: the meaning of intimate relationships, external constraints and facilitators, and managing external constraints. Though many people with intellectual disabilities desire and benefit from intimate relationships, they experience restrictions that others do not, which can lead to isolation and loneliness. Intimate relationships are not always necessarily linked with sexual behavior; therefore, intimate relationships warrant their own focus in future research, as well as in education and training for people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. Within this, a commitment to transparency over research processes is needed, in particular with reference to how ethical approval was obtained, since this has been a shortcoming of research with this focus to date
Cervical lymph node metastasis in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx: a collective international review
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the head and neck is a well-recognized pathologic entity that rarely occurs in the larynx. Although the 5-year locoregional control rates are high, distant metastasis has a tendency to appear more than 5 years post treatment. Because AdCC of the larynx is uncommon, it is difficult to standardize a treatment protocol. One of the controversial points is the decision whether or not to perform an elective neck dissection on these patients. Because there is contradictory information about this issue, we have critically reviewed the literature from 1912 to 2015 on all reported cases of AdCC of the larynx in order to clarify this issue. During the most recent period of our review (1991-2015) with a more exact diagnosis of the tumor histology, 142 cases were observed of AdCC of the larynx, of which 91 patients had data pertaining to lymph node status. Eleven of the 91 patients (12.1%) had nodal metastasis and, based on this low proportion of patients, routine elective neck dissection is therefore not recommended
Understanding Uncertainties in Model-Based Predictions of Aedes aegypti Population Dynamics
Dengue is one of the most important insect-vectored human viral diseases. The principal vector is Aedes aegypti, a mosquito that lives in close association with humans. Currently, there is no effective vaccine available and the only means for limiting dengue outbreaks is vector control. To help design vector control strategies, spatial models of Ae. aegypti population dynamics have been developed. However, the usefulness of such models depends on the reliability of their predictions, which can be affected by different sources of uncertainty including uncertainty in the model parameter estimation, uncertainty in the model structure, measurement errors in the data fed into the model, individual variability, and stochasticity in the environment. This study quantifies uncertainties in the mosquito population dynamics predicted by Skeeter Buster, a spatial model of Ae. aegypti, for the city of Iquitos, Peru. The uncertainty quantification should enable us to better understand the reliability of model predictions, improve Skeeter Buster and other similar models by targeting those parameters with high uncertainty contributions for further empirical research, and thereby decrease uncertainty in model predictions
Linking Self-Incompatibility, Dichogamy, and Flowering Synchrony in Two Euphorbia Species: Alternative Mechanisms for Avoiding Self-Fertilization?
Background: Plant species have several mechanisms to avoid selfing such as dichogamy or a self-incompatibility response.
Dichogamy in a single flower may reduce autogamy but, to avoid geitonogamy, plants must show flowering
synchronization among all their flowers (i.e. synchronous dichogamy). It is hypothesized that one species would not
simultaneously show synchronous dichogamy and self-incompatibility because they are redundant mechanisms to reduce
selfing; however, this has not been accurately assessed.
Methodology/Principal Findings: This expectation was tested over two years in two natural populations of the closely
related Mediterranean spurges Euphorbia boetica and E. nicaeensis, which completely avoid autogamy by protogyny at the
cyathia level. Both spurges showed a high population synchrony (Z,79), and their inflorescences flower synchronously. In E.
nicaeensis, there was no overlap among the cyathia in anthesis of successive inflorescence levels and the overlap between
sexual phases of cyathia of the same inflorescence level was uncommon (4–16%). In contrast, E. boetica showed a high
overlap among consecutive inflorescence levels (74–93%) and between sexual phases of cyathia of the same inflorescence
level (48–80%). The flowering pattern of both spurges was consistent in the two populations and over the two successive
years. A hand-pollination experiment demonstrated that E. nicaeensis was strictly self-compatible whereas E. boetica was
partially self-incompatible.
Conclusions/Significance: We propose that the complex pattern of synchronized protogyny in E. nicaeensis prevents
geitonogamous crosses and, consequently, avoids selfing and inbreeding depression. In E. boetica, a high probability of
geitonogamous crosses may occur but, alternatively, this plant escapes selfing through a self-incompatibility response. We
posit that synchronous dichogamy and physiological self-incompatibility do not co-occur in the same species because each

The Drosophila homolog of the mammalian imprint regulator, CTCF, maintains the maternal genomic imprint in Drosophila melanogaster
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>CTCF is a versatile zinc finger DNA-binding protein that functions as a highly conserved epigenetic transcriptional regulator. CTCF is known to act as a chromosomal insulator, bind promoter regions, and facilitate long-range chromatin interactions. In mammals, CTCF is active in the regulatory regions of some genes that exhibit genomic imprinting, acting as insulator on only one parental allele to facilitate parent-specific expression. In <it>Drosophila</it>, CTCF acts as a chromatin insulator and is thought to be actively involved in the global organization of the genome.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To determine whether CTCF regulates imprinting in <it>Drosophila</it>, we generated <it>CTCF </it>mutant alleles and assayed gene expression from the imprinted <it>Dp(1;f)LJ9 </it>mini-X chromosome in the presence of reduced <it>CTCF </it>expression. We observed disruption of the maternal imprint when <it>CTCF </it>levels were reduced, but no effect was observed on the paternal imprint. The effect was restricted to maintenance of the imprint and was specific for the <it>Dp(1;f)LJ9 </it>mini-X chromosome.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>CTCF in <it>Drosophila </it>functions in maintaining parent-specific expression from an imprinted domain as it does in mammals. We propose that <it>Drosophila </it>CTCF maintains an insulator boundary on the maternal X chromosome, shielding genes from the imprint-induced silencing that occurs on the paternally inherited X chromosome.</p> <p>See commentary: <url>http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7007/8/104</url></p
The first report of RPSA polymorphisms, also called 37/67 kDa LRP/LR gene, in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although polymorphisms of <it>PRNP</it>, the gene encoding prion protein, are known as a determinant affecting prion disease susceptibility, other genes also influence prion incubation time. This finding offers the opportunity to identify other genetic or environmental factor (s) modulating susceptibility to prion disease. Ribosomal protein SA (<it>RPSA</it>), also called 37 kDa laminin receptor precursor (LRP)/67 kDa laminin receptor (LR), acts as a receptor for laminin, viruses and prion proteins. The binding/internalization of prion protein is dependent for LRP/LR.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To identify other susceptibility genes involved in prion disease, we performed genetic analysis of <it>RPSA</it>. For this case-control study, we included 180 sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) patients and 189 healthy Koreans. We investigated genotype and allele frequencies of polymorphism on <it>RPSA </it>by direct sequencing or restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including -8T>C (rs1803893) in the 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of exon 2, 134-32C>T (rs3772138) in the intron, 519G>A (rs2269350) in the intron and 793+58C>T (rs2723) in the intron on the <it>RPSA</it>. The 519G>A (at codon 173) is located in the direct PrP binding site. The genotypes and allele frequencies of the <it>RPSA </it>polymorphisms showed no significant differences between the controls and sporadic CJD patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that these <it>RPSA </it>polymorphisms have no direct influence on the susceptibility to sporadic CJD. This was the first genetic association study of the polymorphisms of <it>RPSA </it>gene with sporadic CJD.</p
