Stereo-SCIDAR: optical turbulence profiling with high sensitivity using a modified SCIDAR instrument
The next generation of adaptive optics systems will require tomographic reconstruction techniques to map the optical refractive index fluctuations, generated by the atmospheric turbulence, along the line of sight to the astronomical target. These systems can be enhanced with data from an external atmospheric profiler. This is important for Extremely Large Telescope scale tomography. Here we propose a new instrument which utilizes the generalized Scintillation Detection And Ranging (SCIDAR) technique to allow high sensitivity vertical profiles of the atmospheric optical turbulence and wind velocity profile above astronomical observatories. The new approach, which we refer to as âstereo-SCIDARâ, uses a stereoscopic system with the scintillation pattern from each star of a double-star target incident on a separate detector. Separating the pupil images for each star has several advantages including increased magnitude difference tolerance for the target stars; negating the need for re-calibration due to the normalization errors usually associated with SCIDAR; an increase of at least a factor of 2 in the signal-to-noise ratio of the cross-covariance function and hence the profile for equal magnitude target stars and up to a factor of 16 improvement for targets of 3âmag difference and easier real-time reconstruction of the wind-velocity profile. Theoretical response functions are calculated for the instrument, and the performance is investigated using a Monte Carlo simulation. The technique is demonstrated using data recorded at the 2.5-m Nordic Optical Telescope and the 1.0-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope, both on La Palma
Yb:YAG planar waveguide lasers grown by pulsed laser deposition: 70% slope efficiencies at 16 W of output power
We present our recent advances in the use of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to fabricate active gain elements for use as amplifiers and laser oscillators. Record output powers exceeding 16 W and slope efficiencies of 70% are reported for optimized epitaxial growth of Yb(7.5%):YAG on to YAG substrates. We show for the first time that the performance of PLD material can meet or even exceed that of materials grown by more established methods such as the Czochralski technique. Details of fabrication, characterization and laser performance are presented in addition to outlining expected future improvements
Comparative study of rare-earth doped sesquioxides grown by pulsed laser deposition and their performance as planar waveguide lasers
The sesquioxides yttria, scandia and lutetia have been identified as promising host materials for high power lasers due to their excellent thermal properties, their ability to incorporate RE-ions and their resulting spectroscopic properties [1]. However, the melting points of these materials exceed 2400°C and are therefore problematic to grow from the melt. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is an alternative method of growing thin crystalline films of these materials, avoiding the requirement for such high temperature growth

decoding fluency in fourth-grade readers of English in Singapore. The participants were three
groups of students who all learned to become bilingual and biliterate in the English language
(EL) and their respective ethnic language in school but differed in the home language they used.
The first group was ethnic Chinese students who used English as the dominant home language
(Chinese EL1); the other two groups were ethnic Chinese and Malay students whose dominant
home language was not English but Chinese (Chinese EL2) and Malay (Malay EL2),
respectively. The measures included pseudo word decoding (phonemic decoding), timed
decoding of derivational words (morphological decoding fluency), oral vocabulary, and passage
comprehension. Path analysis showed that oral vocabulary significantly predicted reading
comprehension across all three groups; yet a significant effect of morphological decoding
fluency surfaced in the Chinese EL1 and Malay EL2 groups but not the Chinese EL2 group.
Multi-group path analysis and commonality analysis further confirmed that morphological
decoding played a larger role in the in the Chinese EL1 and Malay EL2 groups. These findings
are discussed in light of the joint influence of target language experience and cross-linguistic

The Physics of Star Cluster Formation and Evolution

Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. We review recent developments in the field with a focus on theoretical work.Peer reviewe
Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.
