Lattice perturbation theory for gluonic and fermionic actions
We calculate the two loop Landau mean links and the one loop renormalisation
of the anisotropy for Wilson and improved SU(3) gauge actions, using twisted
boundary conditions as a gauge invariant infrared regulator. We show these
accurately describe simulated results, and outline a method for generating
Feynman rules for general lattice field theories, in a form suitable for

Automatically generating Feynman rules for improved lattice field theories
Deriving the Feynman rules for lattice perturbation theory from actions and
operators is complicated, especially when improvement terms are present. This
physically important task is, however, suitable for automation. We describe a
flexible algorithm for generating Feynman rules for a wide range of lattice
field theories including gluons, relativistic fermions and heavy quarks. We
also present an efficient implementation of this in a freely available,
multi-platform programming language (\python), optimised to deal with a wide
class of lattice field theories
Investigating a Hybrid Metaheuristic For Job Shop Rescheduling
Previous research has shown that artificial immune systems can be used to
produce robust schedules in a manufacturing environment. The main goal is to
develop building blocks (antibodies) of partial schedules that can be used to
construct backup solutions (antigens) when disturbances occur during
production. The building blocks are created based upon underpinning ideas from
artificial immune systems and evolved using a genetic algorithm (Phase I). Each
partial schedule (antibody) is assigned a fitness value and the best partial
schedules are selected to be converted into complete schedules (antigens). We
further investigate whether simulated annealing and the great deluge algorithm
can improve the results when hybridised with our artificial immune system
(Phase II). We use ten fixed solutions as our target and measure how well we
cover these specific scenarios

Determination of the physical environment within the Chlamydia trachomatis inclusion using ion-selective ratiometric probes
Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium with a biphasic life cycle that takes place entirely within a membrane-bound vacuole termed an inclusion. The chlamydial inclusion is non-fusogenic with endosomal or lysosomal compartments but intersects a pathway involved in transport of sphingomyelin from the Golgi apparatus to the plasma membrane. The physical conditions within the mature chlamydial inclusion are unknown. We used ratiometric imaging with membrane-permeant, ion-selective fluorescent dyes for microanalyis of the physical environment within the inclusion. Determination of H + , Na + , K + and Ca 2 + concentrations using CFDA (carboxy fluorescein diacetate) or BCECF-AM (2 ′ ,7 ′ -bis (2-carboxyethyl)-5,6-carboxyfluorescein acetoxymethyl ester, SBFI-AM, PBFI-AM and fura-PE3-acetomethoxyester (Fura-PE3-AM), respectively, indicated that all ions assayed within the lumenal space of the inclusion approximated the concentrations within the cytoplasm. Stimulation of purinergic receptors by addition of extracellular ATP triggered a dynamic Ca 2 + response that occurred simultaneously within the cytoplasm and interior of the inclusion. The chlamydial inclusion thus appears to be freely permeable to cytoplasmic ions. A gene variant near ATM is significantly associated with metformin treatment response In type 2 diabetes: A replication and meta-analysis of five cohorts
_Aims/hypothesis:_ In this study we aimed to replicate the previously reported association between the glycaemic response to metformin and the SNP rs11212617 at a locus that includes the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene in multiple additional populations.
_Methods:_ Incident users of metformin selected from the Diabetes Care System West-Friesland (DCS, n=929) and the Rotterdam Study (n=182) from the Netherlands, and the CARDS Trial (n=254) from the UK were genotyped for rs11212617 and tested for an association with both HbA1c reduction and treatment success, defined as the ability to reach the treatment target of an HbA1c ≤7 % (53 mmol/mol). Finally, a meta-analysis including data from literature was performed.
_Results:_ In the DCS cohort, we observed an association between rs11212617 genotype and treatment success on metformin (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.03, 1.58, p=0.028); in the smaller Rotterdam Study cohort, a numerically similar but non-significant trend was observed (OR 1.45, 95% CI 0.87, 2.39, p=0.15); while in the CARDS cohort there was no significant association. In meta-analyses of these three cohorts separately or combined with the previously published cohorts, rs11212617 genotype is associated with metformin treatment success (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.04, 1.49, p=0.016 and OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.33, 1.38, p=7.8×10-6, respectively).

Protons in near earth orbit
The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured
by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at
an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is
parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second
spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70
m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Most of these second spectrum protons follow a complicated
trajectory and originate from a restricted geographic region.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, 7 .eps figure
A Study of Cosmic Ray Secondaries Induced by the Mir Space Station Using AMS-01
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics
experiment that will study cosmic rays in the to range and will be installed on the International Space Station
(ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the
space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected
cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the
AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this
flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space
station using secondary and emissions from primary cosmic rays
interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was
performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential

Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
