    Synthetic strategies for preparing BEDT-TTF derivatives functionalised with metal ion binding groups

    The syntheses of BEDT-TTF (ET) derivatives with potential metal ion binding pyridyl, bipyridyl and terpyridyl groups are achieved either by stepwise construction of the organosulfur core or via reactions of hydroxymethyl-ET for which a cheap and efficient four step route is reported. The tosylate of hydroxymethyl-ET, reported for the first time, undergoes nucleophilic substitutions with pyridyl, bipyridyl- and terpyridyl-thiolates to give new donors. The X-ray crystal structures of two substituted ET derivatives show considerable deviation of the organosulfur donor system from planarity by bending about the short molecular axis of the ET group

    Cepheid calibration of type Ia Supernovae and the Hubble constant

    We investigate how a different calibration of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation taking into account the metallicity corrections, affects the absolute magnitude calibration of Supernovae (SNe) Ia and, in turn, the determination of the Hubble constant H_0. We exploit SN Ia light curves from literature and previously unpublished data, to build the M_B -- Delta m_{15}(B) relation and we calibrate the zero point by means of 9 type Ia SNe with Cepheid measured distances. This relation was then used to build the Hubble diagram and in turn to derive H_0. In the attempt to correct for the host galaxy extinction, we found that the data seems to suggest a value for the total to selective absorption ratio, R_B=3.5, which is smaller than the standard value for our own Galaxy R_B=4.315. Depending on different metallicity corrections for the Cepheids P-L relation, values of R_B and SN sample selection criteria, we found that the values of the Hubble constant H_0 is in the range 68--74 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, with associated uncertainties of the order of 10%. Unpublished photometry is also presented for 18 SNe of our sample (1991S, 1991T, 1992A, 1992K, 1993H, 1993L, 1994D, 1994M, 1994ae, 1995D, 1995ac, 1995bd, 1996bo, 1997bp, 1997br, 1999aa, 1999dk, 2000cx), which are the results of a long standing effort for supernova monitoring at ESO - La Silla and Asiago Observatories.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Formation and Degradation of Beta-casomorphins in Dairy Processing

    Milk proteins including casein are sources of peptides with bioactivity. One of these peptides is beta-casomorphin (BCM) which belongs to a group of opioid peptides formed from b-casein variants. Beta-casomorphin 7 (BCM7) has been demonstrated to be enzymatically released from the A1 or B b-casein variant. Epidemiological evidence suggests the peptide BCM 7 is a risk factor for development of human diseases, including increased risk of type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases but this has not been thoroughly substantiated by research studies. High performance liquid chromatography coupled to UV-Vis and mass spectrometry detection as well as enzyme–linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been used to analyze BCMs in dairy products. BCMs have been detected in raw cow’s milk and human milk and a variety of commercial cheeses, but their presence has yet to be confirmed in commercial yoghurts. The finding that BCMs are present in cheese suggests they could also form in yoghurt, but be degraded during yoghurt processing. Whether BCMs do form in yoghurt and the amount of BCM forming or degrading at different processing steps needs further investigation and possibly will depend on the heat treatment and fermentation process used, but it remains an intriguing unknown

    Reactive synthesis of Ti-Al intermetallics during microwave heating in an E-field maximum

    The time-resolved X-ray diffraction synchrotron radiation technique was used in combination with E-field microwave heating to study in situ the kinetics of intermetallic phase formation in the Ti-Al system. The reaction of Ti with Al is triggered by the melting and spreading of Al onto the surface of Ti particles. The tetragonal TiAl 3 phase is the primary reaction product, formed by instantaneous nucleation at the interface between the unreacted Ti cores and the Al melt. The growth of TiAl 3 layers is diffusion-controlled. These preliminary results demonstrate that microwave heating can be used to rapidly synthesise intermetallic phases from high-purity elemental powders. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.     Effect of projectile nose shape on ballistic resistance of interstitial-free steel sheets

    In this paper an experimental and numerical work is reported concerning the process of perforation of thin steel plates using different projectile nose shapes. The main goal is to analyze how the projectile shape may change the ballistic properties of materials. A wide range of impact velocities from 35 to 180 m/s has been covered during the tests. All the projectiles were 13 mm in diameter and the targets were 1 mm thick, as such the projectile can be regarded as rigid and the target sheets were of interstitial-free (IF) steel. The mass ratio (projectile mass/steel sheet mass) and the ratio between the span of the steel sheet and the diameter of the projectile were kept constant, equal to 0.38 and 3.85 respectively. To define the thermoviscoplastic behavior of the target material, the Rusinek-Klepaczko (RK) constitutive model [1] was used. The complete identification of the material constants was done based on a rigorous material characterization. Numerical simulations of some experimental tests were carried out using a non-linear finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. It was found that the numerical models are able to describe the physical mechanisms in the perforation process with a good accuracy.The National Centre of Research and Development under the grant WND-DEM-1-203/00
