Thirty Meter Telescope Site Testing I: Overview
As part of the conceptual and preliminary design processes of the Thirty
Meter Telescope (TMT), the TMT site testing team has spent the last five years
measuring the atmospheric properties of five candidate mountains in North and
South America with an unprecedented array of instrumentation. The site testing
period was preceded by several years of analyses selecting the five candidates,
Cerros Tolar, Armazones and Tolonchar in northern Chile; San Pedro Martir in
Baja California, Mexico and the 13 North (13N) site on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Site
testing was concluded by the selection of two remaining sites for further
consideration, Armazones and Mauna Kea 13N. It showed that all five candidates
are excellent sites for an extremely large astronomical observatory and that
none of the sites stands out as the obvious and only logical choice based on
its combined properties. This is the first article in a series discussing the

Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars III: First Results from the Grid Giant Star Survey and Discovery of a Possible Nearby Sagittarius Tidal Structure in Virgo
We describe first results of a spectroscopic probe of selected fields from
the Grid Giant Star Survey. Multifiber spectroscopy of several hundred stars in
a strip of eleven fields along delta approximately -17^{circ}, in the range 12
<~ alpha <~ 17 hours, reveals a group of 8 giants that have kinematical
characteristics differing from the main field population, but that as a group
maintain coherent, smoothly varying distances and radial velocities with
position across the fields. Moreover, these stars have roughly the same
abundance, according to their MgH+Mgb absorption line strengths. Photometric
parallaxes place these stars in a semi-loop structure, arcing in a contiguous
distribution between 5.7 and 7.9 kpc from the Galactic center. The spatial,
kinematical, and abundance coherence of these stars suggests that they are part
of a diffuse stream of tidal debris, and one roughly consistent with a wrapped,
leading tidal arm of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy.Comment: 8 pages including 4 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ
Multi Aperture Scintillation Sensor (MASS) used in the site selection of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT)
One of the main tools used in the TMT site testing campaign is the turbulence profiler MASS. We describe empirical investigations and a side by side comparison of two MASS systems which were performed in order to identify the accuracy of MASS turbulence data and its dependence on the instrument calibration. The accuracy of the total seeing delivered by the TMT MASS systems is found to be better than 0"05. The combination of MASS and DIMM allows to observe the seeing within the first few hundred meters of the atmosphere and can be used to investigate possible correlations with meteorological parameters measured close to the ground. We also compare the detection of clouds and cirrus by means of MASS data (LOSSAM method) with measurements of the thermal emission of clouds using a net radiation sensor. TEAD and YAP regulate the enhancer network of human embryonic pancreatic progenitors.
The genomic regulatory programmes that underlie human organogenesis are poorly understood. Pancreas development, in particular, has pivotal implications for pancreatic regeneration, cancer and diabetes. We have now characterized the regulatory landscape of embryonic multipotent progenitor cells that give rise to all pancreatic epithelial lineages. Using human embryonic pancreas and embryonic-stem-cell-derived progenitors we identify stage-specific transcripts and associated enhancers, many of which are co-occupied by transcription factors that are essential for pancreas development. We further show that TEAD1, a Hippo signalling effector, is an integral component of the transcription factor combinatorial code of pancreatic progenitor enhancers. TEAD and its coactivator YAP activate key pancreatic signalling mediators and transcription factors, and regulate the expansion of pancreatic progenitors. This work therefore uncovers a central role for TEAD and YAP as signal-responsive regulators of multipotent pancreatic progenitors, and provides a resource for the study of embryonic development of the human pancreas
The Thirty Meter Telescope site testing system
The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) site testing team are developing a suite of instruments to measure the atmospheric and optical characteristics of candidate TMT sites. Identical sets of robotically operating instruments will be placed at each candidate site. The fully developed system will comprise of a combined MASS/DIMM. a SODAR, tower mounted thermal probes and a portable DIMM. These instruments have overlapping altitude coverage and provide a measure of the C^2_n profile from the ground up with sufficient resolution to make conclusions about the ground layer and high altitude turbulence characteristics. The overlapping altitude coverage is essential to ensure consistency between these very different instruments. In addition to checking for consistency in the overlap regions, procedures are being used to cross check between instruments, i.e. the calculation of the isoplanatic angle from both the MASS and DIMM and that the integrals of the C^2_n profiles from the MASS, SODAR and 30m tower gives the same r0 value as measured by the DIMM. We discuss a variation of the traditional DIMM system in which we employ a continuous drift mode readout technique giving a maximum of nearly 300 samples per second. Findings of our major equipment testing campaigns and first field deployment are presented that demonstrate our progress in developing a rigorous approach to site testing
Evaluation of the Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation among Chilean participants
Artículo de publicación SciELOObjetivo: El Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE) es un instrumento específico para la evaluación cosmética y funcional de la nariz desde la perspectiva del paciente, desarrollado originalmente en inglés. El objetivo del presente estudio es comparar las distribuciones en distintas poblaciones. Material y Método: El instrumento validado en español chileno ROE fue sometido a prueba para evaluar su validez de criterio comparando los resultados de la escala en pacientes programados que deseaban someterse a rinoplastía versus 2 grupos control: 1) Pacientes hospitalizados por otras causas y 2) Estudiantes de medicina. La validez de constructo ya ha sido publicada por los creadores de la escala. Para la comparación de variables se utilizaron las pruebas t de Student, ANOVA, Wilcoxon, Kruskall Wallis, prueba exacta de Fisher o χ2 según correspondiera. Para todas las pruebas se utilizó un nivel alfa de 5%. Resultados: Se aplicó la encuesta a 45 pacientes. La edad promedio de la muestra fue de 35,4 años. La confiabilidad de la escala fue de 84,78%. Se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el puntaje total (p = 0,0047) en 4 de los 6 ítems. Conclusión: Los resultados preliminares de nuestro estudio sugieren que la versión en Español del Rhinoplasty Outcomes Evaluation es útil para evaluar la satisfacción con la apariencia nasal en chilenos
Organic phosphorus in the terrestrial environment: a perspective on the state of the art and future priorities
Background
The dynamics of phosphorus (P) in the environment is important for regulating nutrient cycles in natural and managed ecosystems and an integral part in assessing biological resilience against environmental change. Organic P (Po) compounds play key roles in biological and ecosystems function in the terrestrial environment being critical to cell function, growth and reproduction.
Scope
We asked a group of experts to consider the global issues associated with Po in the terrestrial environment, methodological strengths and weaknesses, benefits to be gained from understanding the Po cycle, and to set priorities for Po research.
Conclusions
We identified seven key opportunities for Po research including: the need for integrated, quality controlled and functionally based methodologies; assessment of stoichiometry with other elements in organic matter; understanding the dynamics of Po in natural and managed systems; the role of microorganisms in controlling Po cycles; the implications of nanoparticles in the environment and the need for better modelling and communication of the research. Each priority is discussed and a statement of intent for the Po research community is made that highlights there are key contributions to be made toward understanding biogeochemical cycles, dynamics and function of natural ecosystems and the management of agricultural systems
