Cohort profile: A population-based record linkage platform to address critical epidemiological evidence gaps in respiratory syncytial virus and other respiratory infections
Introduction The Western Australia (WA) Respiratory Infections Linked Data Platform is a population-based cohort established to investigate the epidemiology of RSV and other respiratory infections in children aged 0-10 years, incorporating microbiological testing patterns, hospital admissions, emergency department presentations, and socio-demographic data. Methods The cohort was formed through individual linkages between datasets from the WA Department of Health including the Birth and Death Registry, Midwives Notification System (MNS), Hospital Morbidity Data Collection, Emergency Department Data Collection, WA Notifiable Diseases Database, WA Register of Developmental Anomalies, WA Cerebral Palsy Register, WA Antenatal Vaccination Database, WA Family Connections, and PathWest Respiratory Virus Surveillance Data. Hospitalisations and emergency department presentations were temporally linked to routine respiratory viral surveillance data. Results The cohort consists of 368,830 WA births between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2020 with accompanying perinatal and demographic data, and with secondary care follow-up to 30 June 2022. Of these births, 24,660 (6.7%) identify as Aboriginal. A total of 4,077 (1.1%) children died from all causes during the study period (2010-2020), and 9.2% (33,818) of children were born preterm (<37 weeks). Conclusion The Respiratory Infections Linked Data Platform enables epidemiological investigations, identifying virus-specific risk groups, risk factors, clinical presentation, viral testing patterns, long-term impacts and accurate measures of viral incidence rates in risk and population sub-groups This will not only aid in the calculation of cost-effectiveness estimates of interventions such as immunisations, but also provide guidance for design and implementation of such programs to priority groups. The Respiratory Infections Linked Data Platform will also enable evaluation of the direct and indirect effects of maternal and infant vaccines and new therapeutics. Analyses using this platform will also generate epidemiological data needed for other respiratory viruses on the vaccine pipeline such as parainfluenza virus and human metapneumovirus
Structural characterization of a novel KH-domain containing plant chloroplast endonuclease
Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a single celled alga that undergoes apoptosis in response to UV-C irradiation. UVI31+, a novel UV-inducible DNA endonuclease in C. reinhardtii, which normally localizes near cell wall and pyrenoid regions, gets redistributed into punctate foci within the whole chloroplast, away from the pyrenoid, upon UV-stress. Solution NMR structure of the first putative UV inducible endonuclease UVI31+ revealed an alpha(1)-beta(1)-beta(2)-alpha(2)-alpha(3)-beta(3) fold similar to BolA and type II KH-domain ubiquitous protein families. Three alpha-helices of UVI31+ constitute one side of the protein surface, which are packed to the other side, made of three-stranded beta-sheet, with intervening hydrophobic residues. A twenty-three residues long polypeptide stretch (D54-H76) connecting beta(1) and beta(2) strands is found to be highly flexible. Interestingly, UVI31+ recognizes the DNA primarily through its beta-sheet. We propose that the catalytic triad residues involving Ser114, His95 and Thr116 facilitate DNA endonuclease activity of UVI31+. Further, decreased endonuclease activity of the S114A mutant is consistent with the direct participation of Ser114 in the catalysis. Charged particle decay of hot and rotating Mo nuclei in fusion-evaporation reactions
A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the
Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the
reaction Ti + Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is
presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been
extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data
concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of
the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited
even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a
mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data.
Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events
are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the
statistical model have been found for forward emitted -particles; they
may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as
Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the
compound nucleus formation.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure
Links2HealthierBubs' cohort study: Protocol for a record linkage study on the safety, uptake and effectiveness of influenza and pertussis vaccines among pregnant Australian women
Introduction Pregnant women and infants are at risk of severe influenza and pertussis infection. Inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (dTpa) are recommended during pregnancy to protect both mothers and infants. In Australia, uptake is not routinely monitored but coverage appears sub-optimal. Evidence on the safety of combined antenatal IIV and dTpa is fragmented or deficient, and there remain knowledge gaps of population-level vaccine effectiveness. We aim to establish a large, population-based, multi-jurisdictional cohort of mother-infant pairs to measure the uptake, safety and effectiveness of antenatal IIV and dTpa vaccines in three Australian jurisdictions. This is a first step toward assessing the impact of antenatal vaccination programmes in Australia, which can then inform government policy with respect to future strategies in national vaccination programmes. Methods and analysis ' Links2HealthierBubs' is an observational, population-based, retrospective cohort study established through probabilistic record linkage of administrative health data. The cohort includes births between 2012 and 2017 (∼607 605 mother-infant pairs) in jurisdictions with population-level antenatal vaccination and health outcome data (Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory). Perinatal data will be the reference frame to identify the cohort. Jurisdictional vaccination registers will identify antenatal vaccination status and the gestational timing of vaccination. Information on maternal, fetal and child health outcomes will be obtained from hospitalisation and emergency department records, notifiable diseases databases, developmental anomalies databases, birth and mortality registers. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was obtained from the Western Australian Department of Health, Curtin University, the Menzies School of Health Research, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, and the West Australian Aboriginal Health Ethics Committees. Research findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, at scientific meetings, and may be incorporated into communication materials for public health agencies and the public

The yrast structure of the neutron-rich nucleus 97Zr has been studied using fission of target-like products in the reaction of a 48Ca beam on a thick 238U target. The level scheme known from the previous studies up to an energy and spin of approx. 4619 keV and 23/2-, respectively, has been extended by about 3 MeV and a few units of angular momentum. The located structure can be discussed in terms of shell model configurations
Lifetime measurements of short-lived excited states, and shape changes in As 69 and Ge 66 nuclei
Background: The nuclear shape is a macroscopic feature of an atomic nucleus that is sensitive to the underlying nuclear structure in terms of collectivity and the interaction between nucleons. Therefore, the evolution of nuclear shapes has attracted many theoretical and experimental nuclear structure studies. The structure of the A≈70, N≈Z nuclei, lying far from the stability line, is interesting because a particularly strong proton-neutron correlation may occur here due to the occupation of the same orbits by nucleons of both types. In this region, different particle configurations drive a nucleus towards various deformed shapes: prolate, oblate, octupole, or nonaxial. These nuclear shapes change rapidly with nucleon number and also with angular momentum. This is reflected by a presence of different structures (bands) of excited states which exhibit a broad range of lifetimes. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to determine lifetimes of some high-spin excited states in As69 and Ge66 nuclei to examine the shape evolution in these neutron-deficient nuclei. Methods: Lifetimes of high-spin states in As69 and Ge66 have been measured by using the Doppler-shift attenuation technique with the GASP and recoil filter detector setup at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The nuclei of interest were produced in the S32(95MeV)+0.8mg/cm2 Ca40 fusion-evaporation reaction. The strongest reaction channels 3p and α2p led to the As69 and Ge66 final nuclei, respectively. Using γ-γ-recoil coincidences we were able to determine very short lifetimes (in the femtosecond range) in the residual nuclei of interest. Results: In As69, the extracted lifetimes are τ=72 (-32, +45) fs for the 33/2+ state at 7897 keV and τ<85 fs for the 37/2+ state at 9820 keV. For the Ge66 case, the lifetime of the 11- state at 7130 keV is τ=122(±41) fs. Lifetimes in As69 and Ge66 reported in this paper have been measured for the first time in the present experiment. Conclusions: The results are discussed in the terms of deformation and shape evolution in As69 and Ge66. The quadrupole moments deduced from the measured lifetimes were compared with the cranked Woods-Saxon-Strutinsky calculations by means of the total Routhian surface method. It turns out that Band 3 in As69 shows an oblate-prolate shape transition, and above spin 33/2+ it corresponds to a prolate collective structure with β2≈0.27 and γ≈20. In turn, in Ge66 the negative-parity band built on the 7- state at 4205 keV corresponds to a triaxial shape with β2=0.33 and γ=31. Analysis of the transitional quadrupole moments derived from the experimental and theoretical ones points to a significant change of deformation in the As69 and Ge66 nuclei with increasing rotational frequency

Two states fed in the β decay of the 27/2- high-spin isomer in Y97 were identified at 5570 and 5606 keV. The located level structure can be discussed in terms of shell-model configurations
Patients' perception of using telehealth for type 2 diabetes management: a phenomenological study
BACKGROUND:
There is a growing body of evidence that supports the uses of telehealth to monitor and manage people with diabetes at a distance. Despite this, the uptake of telehealth has been low. The objective of this study is to explore patients' perceptions of using telehealth for type 2 diabetes management.
METHODS:
Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 10 patients from the NHS Newham area in London, UK. Data were collected using recorded semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and the analysis was guided by the phenomenological analysis approach.
RESULTS:
We identified three main themes for facilitating positive patient experience or acceptance of telehealth and these included: technology consideration, service perceptions and empowerment. All patients asserted that they were pleased with the technology and many also proclaimed that they could not see themselves being without it. Moreover, very few negative views were reported with respect to the use of telehealth.
CONCLUSION:
The patients' perceived telehealth as a potential to enhance their quality of life, allow them to live independently at home as well as help them take and be in more control over their own health state. The findings of this study therefore supports the use of telehealth for the routine care of people with type 2 diabetes. However, one must interpret the results with caution due to limitations identified in the sample
