Invariants of genus 2 mutants
Pairs of genus 2 mutant knots can have different Homfly polynomials, for
example some 3-string satellites of Conway mutant pairs. We give examples which
have different Kauffman 3-variable polynomials, answering a question raised by
Dunfield et al in their study of genus 2 mutants. While pairs of genus 2 mutant
knots have the same Jones polynomial, given from the Homfly polynomial by
setting v=s^2, we give examples whose Homfly polynomials differ when v=s^3. We
also give examples which differ in a Vassiliev invariant of degree 7, in
contrast to satellites of Conway mutant knots.Comment: 16 pages, 20 figure
Pressure and velocity measurements in a three-dimensional wall jet
The effects on the flow fields of varying the ratio of the velocity at the exit plane of the nozzle to the outer tunnel flow are reported. The pressure-velocity correlations are taken and some trends are discussed. Emphasis is placed on comparing the coherence between the fluctuating pressure and velocity fields at various locations in the different flow configurations
An experimental investigation of an axisymmetric jet in a coflowing airstream
The flow development of an axisymmetric jet exhausting into a moving airstream has been studied. The jet has a Reynolds number of 22,600, and the ratio of the jet velocity to the wind tunnel velocity is 5.1 to 1. The flow field of the axisymmetric jet was examined at locations varying from approximately zero to eight diameters downstream of the orifice. Of primary concern at each downstream location was the mapping of the one point statistical properties of the flow, including mean velocity, turbulent intensity, and intermittency. Autocorrelations and power spectral density curves were determined for both the fluctuating velocity field and the concentration signal at various distances from the jet's center line for different downstream locations. A laser Doppler velocimeter, using a phase locked loop processor, was used to make the desired velocity field measurements which were compared with hot wire anemometer and pressure probe data

An investigation of social activities of neurologically healthy older adults and relevance of the Social Activities Checklist (SOCACT-2)
Purpose: This preliminary study aimed to describe the type, range, partner and frequency of social activity among neurologically healthy older people in order to evaluate the content validity of the SOCial ACTivities Checklist (SOCACT-2).
Method: Ten neurologically healthy older people were recruited. Participants’ social activities were investigated through the completion of the SOCACT-2. Naturalistically occurring social activities were then recorded in a social activity diary over 28 consecutive days. Items recorded in the diaries were compared with SOCACT-2 items, and new items not included in the SOCACT-2 were noted. Frequency and location of participation was also recorded.
Results: All SOCACT-2 items were recorded in the diaries, with the exception of two. Findings suggest that another two SOCACT-2 items could be rephrased to more accurately reflect naturalistically occurring social activities, and two new categories of social activities were identified.
Conclusions: The results provide preliminary evidence for the relevance of the majority of SOCACT items. Revisions to four existing items included in the SOCACT-2, as well as the inclusion of two additional items may be indicated to capture the range of activities participated in by older people
The Swing Voter’s Curse in the Laboratory
This paper reports the first laboratory study of the swing voter’s curse and provides insights on the larger theoretical and empirical literature on "pivotal voter" models. Our experiment controls for different information levels of voters, as well as the size of the electorate, the distribution of preferences, and other theoretically relevant parameters. The design varies the share of partisan voters and the prior belief about a payoff relevant state of the world. Our results support the equilibrium predictions of the Feddersen-Pesendorfer model, and clearly reject the notion that voters in the laboratory use naive decision-theoretic strategies. The voters act as if they are aware of the swing voter’s curse and adjust their behavior to compensate. While the compensation is not complete and there is some heterogeneity in individual behavior, we find that aggregate outcomes, such as efficiency, turnout, and margin of victory, closely track the theoretical predictions
Probing anharmonic properties of nuclear surface vibration by heavy-ion fusion reactions
Describing fusion reactions between ^{16}O and ^{154}Dy and, between ^{16}O
and ^{144}Sm by the and interacting boson model, we show that
heavy-ion fusion reactions are strongly affected by anharmonic properties of
nuclear surface vibrations and nuclear shape, and thus provide a powerful

Thin-film flow in helically wound rectangular channels with small torsion
Laminar gravity-driven thin-film flow down a helically-wound channel of rectangular cross-section with small torsion in which the fluid depth is small is considered. Neglecting the entrance and exit regions we obtain the steady-state solution that is independent of position along the axis of the channel, so that the flow, which comprises a primary flow in the direction of the axis of the channel and a secondary flow in the cross-sectional plane, depends only on position in the two-dimensional cross-section of the channel. A thin-film approximation yields explicit expressions for the fluid velocity and pressure in terms of the free-surface shape, the latter satisfying a non-linear ordinary differential equation that has a simple exact solution in the special case of a channel of rectangular cross-section. The predictions of the thin-film model are shown to be in good agreement with much more computationally intensive solutions of the small-helix-torsion Navier–Stokes equations. The present work has particular relevance to spiral particle separators used in the mineral-processing industry. The validity of an assumption commonly used in modelling flow in spiral separators, namely that the flow in the outer region of the separator cross-section is described by a free vortex, is shown to depend on the problem parameters
Probing the time-variation of the fine-structure constant: Results based on Si IV doublets from a UVES sample
We report a new constraint on the variation of the fine-structure constant
based on the analysis of 15 Si IV doublets selected from a ESO-UVES sample. We
find \Delta\alpha/\alpha = (+0.15+/-0.43) x 10^-5 over a redshift range of
1.59< z < 2.92 which is consistent with no variation in \alpha. This result
represents a factor of three improvement on the constraint on
\Delta\alpha/\alpha based on Si IV doublets compared to the published results
in the literature. The alkali doublet method used here avoids the implicit
assumptions used in the many-multiplet method that chemical and ionization
inhomogeneities are negligible and isotopic abundances are close to the

Seasonal Training-Load Quantification in Elite English Premier League Soccer Players
Purpose: To quantify the seasonal training load completed by professional soccer players of the English Premier League. Methods: Thirty players were sampled (using GPS, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion [RPE]) during the daily training sessions of the 2011–12 preseason and in-season period. Preseason data were analyzed across 6 × 1-wk microcycles. In-season data were analyzed across 6 × 6-wk mesocycle blocks and 3 × 1-wk microcycles at start, midpoint, and end-time points. Data were also analyzed with respect to number of days before a match. Results: Typical daily training load (ie, total distance, high-speed distance, percent maximal heart rate [%HRmax], RPE load) did not differ during each week of the preseason phase. However, daily total distance covered was 1304 (95% CI 434–2174) m greater in the 1st mesocycle than in the 6th. %HRmax values were also greater (3.3%, 1.3–5.4%) in the 3rd mesocycle than in the first. Furthermore, training load was lower on the day before match (MD-1) than 2 (MD-2) to 5 (MD-5) d before a match, although no difference was apparent between these latter time points. Conclusions: The authors provide the 1st report of seasonal training load in elite soccer players and observed that periodization of training load was typically confined to MD-1 (regardless of mesocycle), whereas no differences were apparent during MD-2 to MD-5. Future studies should evaluate whether this loading and periodization are facilitative of optimal training adaptations and match-day performance
Probing the cosmological variation of the fine-structure constant: Results based on VLT-UVES sample
Development of fundamental physics relies on the constancy of various
fundamental quantities such as the fine structure constant. Detecting or
constraining the possible time variations of these fundamental physical
quantities is an important step toward a complete understanding of basic
physics. Here we present the results from a detailed many-multiplet analysis
performed using high signal-to-noise ratio, high spectral resolution
observations of 23 Mg II systems detected toward 18 QSOs in the redshift range
0.4<z<2.3 obtained using UVES at the VLT. We validate our procedure and define
the selection criteria that will avoid possible systematics using detail
analysis of simulated data set. We show our Voigt profile fitting code recovers
the variation in \alpha very accurately when we use single component systems
and multiple component systems that are not heavily blended. Spurious
detections are frequently seen when we use heavily blended systems or the
systems with very weak lines. Thus we avoided heavily blended systems and the
systems with Fe II column density < 2x10^12 cm^-2 in the analysis. All steps
involved in the analysis are presented in detail. The weighted mean value of
the variation in \alpha obtained from our analysis over the redshift range
0.4<z<2.3 is {\Delta\alpha/\alpha} = (-0.06+/-0.06)x10^-5. The median redshift
of our sample is 1.55 the 3\sigma upper limit on the time variation of
is -2.5x10^-16 yr^-1< (\Delta\alpha/\alpha\Delta t) <+1.2x10^-16 yr^-1. To our
knowledge this is the strongest constraint from quasar absorption line studies
