    Action recognition using Kinematics Posture Feature on 3D skeleton joint locations

    Action recognition is a very widely explored research area in computer vision and related fields. We propose Kinematics Posture Feature (KPF) extraction from 3D joint positions based on skeleton data for improving the performance of action recognition. In this approach, we consider the skeleton 3D joints as kinematics sensors. We propose Linear Joint Position Feature (LJPF) and Angular Joint Position Feature (AJPF) based on 3D linear joint positions and angles between bone segments. We then combine these two kinematics features for each video frame for each action to create the KPF feature sets. These feature sets encode the variation of motion in the temporal domain as if each body joint represents kinematics position and orientation sensors. In the next stage, we process the extracted KPF feature descriptor by using a low pass filter, and segment them by using sliding windows with optimized length. This concept resembles the approach of processing kinematics sensor data. From the segmented windows, we compute the Position-based Statistical Feature (PSF). These features consist of temporal domain statistical features (e.g., mean, standard deviation, variance, etc.). These statistical features encode the variation of postures (i.e., joint positions and angles) across the video frames. For performing classification, we explore Support Vector Machine (Linear), RNN, CNNRNN, and ConvRNN model. The proposed PSF feature sets demonstrate prominent performance in both statistical machine learning- and deep learning-based models. For evaluation, we explore five benchmark datasets namely UTKinect-Action3D, Kinect Activity Recognition Dataset (KARD), MSR 3D Action Pairs, Florence 3D, and Office Activity Dataset (OAD). To prevent overfitting, we consider the leave-one-subject-out framework as the experimental setup and perform 10-fold cross-validation. Our approach outperforms several existing methods in these benchmark datasets and achieves very promising classification performance

    Characterising anomalous transport in accretion disks from X-ray observations

    Whilst direct observations of internal transport in accretion disks are not yet possible, measurement of the energy emitted from accreting astrophysical systems can provide useful information on the physical mechanisms at work. Here we examine the unbroken multi-year time variation of the total X-ray flux from three sources: Cygnus X-1 , the microquasar GRS 1915+105 , and for comparison the nonaccreting Crab nebula. To complement previous analyses, we demonstrate that the application of advanced statistical methods to these observational time-series reveals important contrasts in the nature and scaling properties of the transport processes operating within these sources. We find the Crab signal resembles Gaussian noise; the Cygnus X-1 signal is a leptokurtic random walk whose self-similar properties persist on timescales up to three years; and the GRS 1915+105 signal is similar to that from Cygnus X-1, but with self-similarity extending possibly to only a few days. This evidence of self-similarity provides a robust quantitative characterisation of anomalous transport occuring within the systems

    Study of the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) and BDNF genes in French patients with non syndromic mental deficiency

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mental deficiency has been linked to abnormalities in cortical neuronal network connectivity and plasticity. These mechanisms are in part under the control of two interacting signalling pathways, the serotonergic and the brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF) pathways. The aim of the current paper is to determine whether particular alleles or genotypes of two crucial genes of these systems, the serotonin transporter gene (<it>SLC6A4</it>) and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene (<it>BDNF</it>), are associated with mental deficiency (MD).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed four functional polymorphisms (rs25531, 5-HTTLPR, VNTR, rs3813034) of the <it>SLC6A4 </it>gene and one functional polymorphism (Val66 Met) of the <it>BDNF </it>gene in 98 patients with non-syndromic mental deficiency (NS-MD) and in an ethnically matched control population of 251 individuals.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found no significant differences in allele and genotype frequencies in the five polymorphisms studied in the <it>SLC6A4 </it>and <it>BDNF </it>genes of NS-MD patients versus control patients. While the comparison of the patterns of linkage disequilibrium (D') in the control and NS-MD populations revealed a degree of variability it did not, however, reach significance. No significant differences in frequencies of haplotypes and genotypes for VNTR/rs3813034 and rs25531/5-HTTLPR were observed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Altogether, results from the present study do not support a role for any of the five functional polymorphisms of <it>SLC6A4 </it>and <it>BDNF </it>genes in the aetiology of NS-RM. Moreover, they suggest no epistatic interaction in NS-MD between polymorphisms in <it>BDNF </it>and <it>SLC6A4</it>. However, we suggest that further studies on these two pathways in NS-MD remain necessary.</p

    A quantitative approach for measuring the reservoir of latent HIV-1 proviruses.

    A stable latent reservoir for HIV-1 in resting CD4+ T cells is the principal barrier to a cure1-3. Curative strategies that target the reservoir are being tested4,5 and require accurate, scalable reservoir assays. The reservoir was defined with quantitative viral outgrowth assays for cells that release infectious virus after one round of T cell activation1. However, these quantitative outgrowth assays and newer assays for cells that produce viral RNA after activation6 may underestimate the reservoir size because one round of activation does not induce all proviruses7. Many studies rely on simple assays based on polymerase chain reaction to detect proviral DNA regardless of transcriptional status, but the clinical relevance of these assays is unclear, as the vast majority of proviruses are defective7-9. Here we describe a more accurate method of measuring the HIV-1 reservoir that separately quantifies intact and defective proviruses. We show that the dynamics of cells that carry intact and defective proviruses are different in vitro and in vivo. These findings have implications for targeting the intact proviruses that are a barrier to curing HIV infection

    The effect of wire electrical discharge machining on the fatigue life of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo aerospace alloy

    AbstractThe paper details experimental data for the fatigue behaviour of aeroengine alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo following wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), with minimum damage generator technology and optimised trim pass strategies. Comparative results for flank milled samples are also given together with associated micrographs detailing workpiece subsurface integrity and fracture initiation. Despite a marginally higher S-N response for the milled specimens compared to the wire machined samples when subject to a finishing regime, linear regression statistical analysis suggested no significant difference in performance at the 5% level based on slope responses. Micrographs showing sample crack initiation sites and fatigue crack growth paths suggest a 40- 50μm altered zone in fracture surfaces for milled specimens with fatigue striations defining the crack path. For WEDM surfaces, crack initiation was in some cases due to defects below the machined surface, with secondary cracks probably due to local stresses
