Inside the belly of the beast. Reflections on the history of IRCT

    Get PDF
This paper is looking back and taking stock of the history of IRCT from the perspective of a founder of a treatment centre, former member of the IRCT council and ExCom and author of Torture Journal. It is the story of enthusiasm, ambition, dedication, devotion, hope and dreams that the worldwide battle against torture could be won in the near future. And it is also the story of a rocky road with failures, disillusionment, disappointment, team conflicts and burnout which commonly but insufficiently is described as “vicarious traumatization”. Most centres were established by charismatic, visionary pioneers with entrepreneurial skills and a missionary sense, which enabled them to build and defend their organisations against reluctant bureaucracies and the prevailing attitude of denial and indifference in society. Because they tended to ignore and neglect structural issues and develop a sense of grandiosity, these types of leaders often obstructed the transformation of the organisation into a professionally managed health care institution

Overview of Virginia Supreme Court Cases on Domestic Relations: 1970-1980

    Get PDF
The Supreme Court of Virginia examined a variety of domestic relations problems and issues during the last decade. Most of the court\u27s decisions involved divorce issues such as jurisdiction, alimony or support and maintenance, and child custody or support orders. However, the court also decided cases on annulment, the enforcement of support and maintenance decrees, legitimacy and paternity, adoption, name changes and intrafamily tort immunity

The diplomatic mission of Alexander Wilbourne Weddell at the inter-American conference for the maintenance of peace December 1-23, 1936

    Get PDF
This thesis evaluates the diplomatic activities of Ambassador Weddell at the Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace. Weddell\u27s accomplishments are analyzed against the background of the Conference and the objectives of the State Department. The approach is both chronological and topical, and new or different interpretations of the Conference are not offered. However, the author utilizes heretofore overlooked primary materials and presents a different point of view on the Inter~American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace-- the perspective of Ambassador Weddell

Terrestrial climate variability and seasonality changes in the Mediterranean region between 15 000 and 4000 years BP deduced from marine pollen records

    Get PDF
Pollen-based climate reconstructions were performed on two high-resolution pollen marines cores from the Alboran and Aegean Seas in order to unravel the climatic variability in the coastal settings of the Mediterranean region between 15 000 and 4000 years BP (the Lateglacial, and early to mid-Holocene). The quantitative climate reconstructions for the Alboran and Aegean Sea records focus mainly on the reconstruction of the seasonality changes (temperatures and precipitation), a crucial parameter in the Mediterranean region. This study is based on a multi-method approach comprising 3 methods: the Modern Analogues Technique (MAT), the recent Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling/Generalized Additive Model method (NMDS/GAM) and Partial Least Squares regression (PLS). The climate signal inferred from this comparative approach confirms that cold and dry conditions prevailed in the Mediterranean region during the Oldest and Younger Dryas periods, while temperate conditions prevailed during the Bølling/Allerød and the Holocene. Our records suggest a West/East gradient of decreasing precipitation across the Mediterranean region during the cooler Late-glacial and early Holocene periods, similar to present-day conditions. Winter precipitation was highest during warm intervals and lowest during cooling phases. Several short-lived cool intervals (i.e. Older Dryas, another oscillation after this one (GI-1c2), Gerzensee/Preboreal Oscillations, 8.2 ka event, Bond events) connected to the North Atlantic climate system are documented in the Alboran and Aegean Sea records indicating that the climate oscillations associated with the successive steps of the deglaciation in the North Atlantic area occurred in both the western and eastern Mediterranean regions. This observation confirms the presence of strong climatic linkages between the North Atlantic and Mediterranean regions

Exploring the supply chain coordination dimensions for Artemisinin-based combination therapies in Uganda

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to explore how the logistics, micro, market and macro coordination dimensions affect the availability of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in general hospitals in Uganda. Following a qualitative approach, a multiple case study strategy was used. Specifically, four focus group discussions, each consisting of 8 respondents were conducted from four purposively selected hospitals. The respondents were selected using simple random sampling from representatives of the Drug Therapeutic Management Committee (DTMC) for the purpose of exploring the supply chain coordination. Thereafter, cross-case analysis was done to identify the key coordination mechanisms that could be incorporated into the existing framework. A number of coordination dimensions were identified from the focus group discussions and regrouped using hierarchical coding scheme. Whilst the study’s findings on micro dimensions and logistics dimensions are in accordance with previous scholars, the market and macro dimensions reveal valuable insight into the dimensions necessary for supply chain coordination of ACTs. Market dimensions such as joint training, monitoring and quarterly meetings with key stakeholders are highly regarded for enhancing better coordination of ACTs. The macro coordination dimensions such as verification of ACTs, policies, and regulation are enablers, yet political interference, poverty and donor funding, culture, and lack of appropriate technology affect the availability of ACTs. The novelty of this study is that it adopts a holistic approach to the supply chain coordination of multi-embedded distribution system and extends insight of coordination framework to include the market and macro dimensions that reflect practice.Business Managemen
