Antimicrobial activity of xanthatin from Xanthium spinosum L
[EN] Dichloromethane extracts from Xanthium spinosum L. were fractionated and the fractions tested for their bactericidal and fungicidal activity. From the active fraction, a compound was isolated and identified as xanthatin (I). Xanthatin was active against Colletotrichum gloesporoides, Trichothecium roseum, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus.Ginesta Peris, E.; García-Breijo, F.; Primo Yúfera, E. (1994). Antioxidant activity of isolated compounds in non-volatile residue from orange essential oil
[EN] There has been a growing interest in the food industry and in
preventive medicine to search for «natural antioxidants». Therefore
the objetive of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of
the non-volatile residue of essential orange oil in the oxidation of
unrefined and freshly extracted olive oil. Essential orange oil was
distilled to obtain a non-volatile residue and fracctionated on a Silica
Gel 60 column. The antioxidant activity was determined by measuring
peroxide value obtained after heating olive oil at 70 °C for 48 h.
Six compounds were isolated and purified, four of these had
antioxidant activity, a-tocopherol and three methoxylated flavones
were identified using spectroscopic methods. This study confirmed
that non-volatile fractions of essential orange oil contain natural
antioxidants diferent from a-tocopherol.Peer reviewe
Isolation, structural assignment and insecticidal activity of (1S,2R,3R,4S)1,2-epoxy-1-methyl-4-(1-methyl)cyclohex-3-yl acetate, a natural product from Minthostachys tomentosa
[EN] (-)-(1S,2R,3R,4S)-1,2-Epoxy-1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-cyclohex-3-yl acetate has previously been identified as the active compound of Minthostachys tomentosa responsible for the insecticidal activity against Oncopeltus fasciatus. Its structure was initially assigned on the basis of spectral data. In order to confirm the structure and to define the stereochemistry, stereoselective synthesis of its enantiomer, (+)-(1R,2S,3S,3R)-1,2-epoxy-1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-cyclohex-3-yl acetate, starting from (R)-(-)piperitone, was carried out using a Sharpless reaction as the key step. The natural product is dextro-rotatory while the synthetic product is levo-rotatory. Measurements of insecticidal activities of the different steroisomers revealed that only the natural product is active.Cantin Sanz, A.; Lull, C.; Primo Millo, J.; Miranda Alonso, MÁ.; Primo Yufera, E. Field Efficacy of a Metarhizium anisopliae-Based Attractant Contaminant Device to Control Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)
[EN] Biological control of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) using entomopathogenic fungi is being studied as a viable control strategy. The efficacy of a Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae)-based attractant contaminant device (ACD) to control C. capitata was evaluated in a medium-scale (40 ha) 2-yr field trial using a density of 24 ACD per ha. Results showed that this density was adequate to efficiently reduce fruitfly populations and that the inoculation dishes (IDs) needed replacing mid-season to provide protection for the entire season. In this study, fungal treatment was even more effective than conventional chemical treatment. Population dynamics in fungus-treated fields along with the infectivity study of field-aged IDs in the laboratory found that the ACD remained effective for at least 3 mo. The results suggest M. anisopliae-based ACD can be used to control C. capitata in the field. The implications of its use, especially as a tool in an integrated pest management program, are discussed. We thank Hellen Warbunton for editing the manuscript. Writer's positioning in literature reviews in English and Spanish computing doctoral theses
Making appropriate reference to other texts is an essential feature of successful academic
writing (Hyland, 2000; Myers, 1990). Writers are expected to integrate others' ideas into
their arguments to indicate what is already known about the area of study of the discipline,
or to point out weaknesses, aligning themselves with a particular disciplinary
framework (Thompson & Tribble, 2001). Literature reviews (LRs) of PhD theses provide
support for the writer's position and show the novelty of her/his work. This study analysed
the resources of evaluation at both rhetorical and linguistic levels used by the writers of 20
PhD LRs in computing in English and Spanish. The data reveal that the Spanish and the
English PhD LRs have a similar rhetorical structure. However, the English writers use more
strategies for the development of each move than the Spanish writers. Attitude markers
are the most usual devices doctoral writers use to express opinion in both sets. Epistemic
modality and a variety of discourse-based markers are typically found in the English LRs
while the Spanish LRs seem to rely mainly on adversatives and certainty markers. Differences
respond partly to individual writing styles, but also reflect rhetorical variation in
the relationship with the audience.
