Physiological Plasticity of Neural-Crest-Derived Stem Cells in the Adult Mammalian Carotid Body
Adult stem cell plasticity, or the ability of somatic
stem cells to cross boundaries and differentiate
into unrelated cell types, has been amatter of debate
in the last decade. Neural-crest-derived stem cells
(NCSCs) display a remarkable plasticity during
development. Whether adult populations of NCSCs
retain this plasticity is largely unknown. Herein, we
describe that neural-crest-derived adult carotid
body stem cells (CBSCs) are able to undergo endothelial
differentiation in addition to their reported
role in neurogenesis, contributing to both neurogenic
and angiogenic processes taking place in the organ
during acclimatization to hypoxia. Moreover, CBSC
conversion into vascular cell types is hypoxia inducible
factor (HIF) dependent and sensitive to hypoxiareleased
vascular cytokines such as erythropoietin.
Our data highlight a remarkable physiological plasticity
in an adult population of tissue-specific stem
cells and could have impact on the use of these cells
for cell therapy.ERC Starting Grant: CBSCsMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad SAF2013-48535-P and SAF2016-80412-
Alternations like these also appear in many other varieties of Romance languages, most of them in the Iberian Peninsula and also in the South-Central area of the Italian Peninsula. This paper gives an overview of the main themes related to the selective marking of the DO in the Romance languages (its historical origin, geographical extension, formal marks and factors that may influence them) and it also deals with the case of the Asturian Language in concrete, which has not been enough studied sufficiently neither in the synchronic aspect nor in the diachronic one. As a kind of contribution to the historical point of view, a comparison between the current situation and the situation in the 13th-15th Century is made according to what about a hundred of legal documents from the central-west area of Asturies sho
Towards the Design of a Textile Chemical Ontology
The main goal of this paper is to present the initial version of a Textile Chemical Ontology, to be used by textile professionals with the purpose of conceptualising and representing the banned and harmful chemical substances that are forbidden in this domain. After analysing different methodologies and determining that “Methontology” is the most appropriate for the purposes, this methodology is explored and applied to the domain. In this manner, an initial set of concepts are defined, together with their hierarchy and the relationships between them. This paper shows the benefits of using the ontology through a real use case in the context of Information Retrieval. The potentiality of the proposed ontology in this preliminary evaluation encourages extending the ontology with a higher number of concepts and relationships, and validating it within other Natural Language Processing applications. This research is partially funded by the European Commission under the Seventh (FP7 - 2007- 2013) Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development through the FIRST project (FP7-287607). Synthesis of Enantiopure Oxygen- and Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles by Diastereoselective Ring-Closing Metathesis Reaction in Perhydro-1,3-benzoxazine Derivatives
Producción CientíficaDiastereoselective ring‐closing metathesis reactions on chiral trienic perhydro‐1,3‐benzoxazines derived from (−)‐8‐aminomenthol featuring two diastereotopic olefin chains is described. The diastereochemical outcome of the cyclization appeared to be dependent on the length and position of the olefin chains in perhydro‐1,3‐benzoxazine, the degree of substitution of the double bonds and the ruthenium catalyst used. After separation of the diastereomers, and removal of the chiral auxiliary, enantiopure oxygen‐ and nitrogen‐containing heterocycles were obtained.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Project FEDER-CTQ2014-59870-P)Junta de Castilla y León (Ref. Exploring Quality Teaching in the Online Environment Using an Evidence-Based Approach
Online learning is increasingly ubiquitous in higher education. However, research regarding online teaching often focuses on the affordances of the online environment rather than on the quality of pedagogy. In this paper we consider how online learning could be enhanced using rich pedagogical models that are consistent with a wealth of existing knowledge on pedagogy for face-to-face settings. To do so, we apply an established framework, the Quality Teaching model, to explore pedagogy in the online environment and illustrate its potential benefits using a case study of 60 students in a tertiary mathematics teacher education program. We conclude that the use of an evidence-based pedagogical model can help guide online instructors in the development of high quality online course
The Application of LiDAR Data for the Solar Potential Analysis Based on Urban 3D Model
Solar maps are becoming a popular resource and are available via the web to help plan investments for the benefits of renewable energy. These maps are especially useful when the results have high accuracy. LiDAR technology currently offers high-resolution data sources that are very suitable for obtaining an urban 3D geometry with high precision. Three-dimensional visualization also offers a more accurate and intuitive perspective of reality than 2D maps. This paper presents a new method for the calculation and visualization of the solar potential of building roofs on an urban 3D model, based on LiDAR data. The paper describes the proposed methodology to (1) calculate the solar potential, (2) generate an urban 3D model, (3) semantize the urban 3D model with different existing and calculated data, and (4) visualize the urban 3D model in a 3D web environment. The urban 3D model is based on the CityGML standard, which offers the ability to consistently combine geometry and semantics and enable the integration of different levels (building and city) in a continuous model. The paper presents the workflow and results of application to the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain. This paper also shows the potential use of LiDAR data in different domains that can be connected using different technologies and different scales. The European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 691883, SMARTENCITY supported and funded this study
Evidence of the presence of nucleic acids and β-glucan in the matrix of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae in vitro biofilms
13 p.-9 fig.Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a Gram-negative bacterium that frequently colonizes the human nasopharynx; it is a common cause of chronic and recurrent otitis media in children and of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. To date, no exopolysaccharide clearly contributing to NTHi biofilms has been identified. Consequently, there is some debate as to whether NTHi forms biofilms during colonization and infection. The present work shows that NTHi can form
biofilms in vitro, producing an extracellular matrix composed of proteins, nucleic acids, and a β-glucan. Extracellular DNA, visualized by immunostaining and using fluorochromes, is an important component of this matrix and appears to be essential in biofilm maintenance. Extracellular RNA appears to be required only in the first steps of biofilm formation. Evidence of a matrix polysaccharide was obtained by staining with Calcofluor white M2R and by disaggregating biofilms with cellulase. Using strain
54997, residues of Glcp(1→4) in the NTHi biofilm were confirmed by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Evidence that N-acetyl-L-cysteine shows notable killing activity towards in vitro NTHi biofilm-forming bacteria is also provided. This work was supported by a grant from the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (SAF2012-39444-C02-01).
