Scattering in the energy space for Boussinesq equations
In this note we show that all small solutions in the energy space of the
generalized 1D Boussinesq equation must decay to zero as time tends to
infinity, strongly on slightly proper subsets of the space-time light cone. Our
result does not require any assumption on the power of the nonlinearity,
working even for the supercritical range of scattering. No parity assumption on
the initial data is needed
Benchmarks, sediment source and hydrodynamics of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami deposit at Boca do Rio Estuary
Standardizing the signature of tsunami deposits has been pointed as a major limitation
on the identification of paleo-tsunami deposits. This limitation majorly arises from the
strongly source-dependent nature of these deposits, which in turn determines their
composition and structure, and from the effect of the local morphology of the
corresponding depositional environment. Here, we provide new high-resolution
mineralogical, geochemical and paleontological data of the 1755 tsunami layer of Boca
do Rio estuary (Algarve, Portugal) with the aim of unraveling the signatures of
estuarine tsunami deposit and link them to sediment source
Nodavirus colonizes and replicates in the testis of gilthead seabream and European sea bass modulating its immune and reproductive functions
Viruses are threatening pathogens for fish aquaculture. Some of them are transmitted
through gonad fluids or gametes as occurs with nervous necrosis virus (NNV). In order to
be transmitted through the gonad, the virus should colonize and replicate inside some cell
types of this tissue and avoid the subsequent immune response locally. However, whether
NNV colonizes the gonad, the cell types that are infected, and how the immune response in
the gonad is regulated has never been studied. We have demonstrated for the first time the
presence and localization of NNV into the testis after an experimental infection in the European
sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), and in the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a very
susceptible and an asymptomatic host fish species, respectively. Thus, we localized in the
testis viral RNA in both species using in situ PCR and viral proteins in gilthead seabream by
immunohistochemistry, suggesting that males might also transmit the virus. In addition, we
were able to isolate infective particles from the testis of both species demonstrating that
NNV colonizes and replicates into the testis of both species. Blood contamination of the tissues
sampled was discarded by completely fish bleeding, furthermore the in situ PCR and
immunocytochemistry techniques never showed staining in blood vessels or cells. Moreover,
we also determined how the immune and reproductive functions are affected comparing
the effects in the testis with those found in the brain, the main target tissue of the virus.
Interestingly, NNV triggered the immune response in the European sea bass but not in the
gilthead seabream testis. Regarding reproductive functions, NNV infection alters 17β-estradiol
and 11-ketotestosterone production and the potential sensitivity of brain and testis to
these hormones, whereas there is no disruption of testicular functions according to several
reproductive parameters. Moreover, we have also studied the NNV infection of the testis in
vitro to assess local responses. Our in vitro results show that the changes observed on the expression of immune and reproductive genes in the testis of both species are different to
those observed upon in vivo infections in most of the casesMINECO and FEDER (AGL2010-20801-C02-01; AGL2010-20801-C02-02; AGL2013-43588-P); Fundación Séneca (04538/GERM/06)Versión del editor4,411
MODELLING SOLAR CELL S-SHAPED I-V CHARACTERISTICS WITH DC LUMPED-PARAMETER EQUIVALENT CIRCUITS A REVIEW
This article reviews and appraises the dc lumped-parameter equivalent circuit models that have been proposed so far for representing some types of solar cells that can exhibit under certain circumstances a detrimental S-shaped concave deformation within the energy-producing fourth quadrant of their illuminated I–V characteristics. We first present a very succinct recollection of lumped-parameter equivalent circuits that are commonly used to model conventional solar cells in general. We then chronologically present and discuss lumped-parameter equivalent sub-circuits that, combined with conventional solar cell equivalent circuits, are used to specifically represent the undesired S-shaped behaviour. The mathematically descriptive equations of each complete equivalent circuit are also examined, and closed form solutions for the terminal current and voltage as explicit functions of each other are presented and discussed whenever available. While comparing the most salient features and explaining the practical advantages and disadvantages of such equivalent circuit models, we offer some comments on possible directions for further improvement
Efficacy of extended infusion of β-lactam antibiotics for the treatment of febrile neutropenia in haematologic patients : Protocol for a randomised, multicentre, open-label, superiority clinical trial (BEATLE)
Altres ajuts: The BEATLE study is a non-commercial, investigator-driven clinical trial funded by the Spanish Network for Research in Infectious Diseases (REIPI RD16/0016/0005; RD16/0016/0010) The Spanish Clinical Research Network (SCReN) provides clinical trial data monitoring and oversees pharmacovigilance (PT17/0017/0010).Background: Febrile neutropaenia (FN) is a very common complication in patients with haematological malignancies and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Broad-spectrum antipseudomonal β-lactam antibiotics (BLA) are routinely used for the treatment of cancer patients with FN. However, the clinical efficacy of BLA may be diminished in these patients because they present with pathophysiological variations that compromise the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of these antibiotics. Optimised administration of BLA in prolonged infusions has demonstrated better clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. However, there is a paucity of data on the usefulness of this strategy in patients with FN. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that the administration of BLA would be clinically more effective by extended infusion (EI) than by intermittent infusion (II) in haematological patients with FN. Methods: A randomised, multicentre, open-label, superiority clinical trial will be performed. Patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy or haematopoietic stem-cell transplant and who have FN and receive empirical antibiotic therapy with cefepime, piperacillin-tazobactam or meropenem will be randomised (1:1) to receive the antibiotic by EI (during half the time of the dosing interval) in the study group, or by II (30 min) in the control group. The primary endpoint will be clinical efficacy, defined as defervescence without modifying the antibiotic treatment administered within the first 5 days of therapy. The primary endpoint will be analysed in the intention-to-treat population. The secondary endpoints will be pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target achievement, bacteraemia clearance, decrease in C-reactive protein, overall (30-day) case-fatality rate, adverse events and development of a population PK model of the BLA studied. Discussion: Data on the usefulness of BLA administration in patients with FN are scant. Only three clinical studies addressing this issue have been published thus far, with contradictory results. Moreover, these studies had some methodological flaws that limit the interpretation of their findings. If this randomised, multicentre, phase IV, open-label, superiority clinical trial validates the hypothesis that the administration of BLA is clinically more effective by EI than by II in haematological patients with FN, then the daily routine management of these high-risk patients could be changed to improve their outcomes. Testing rock magnetic and AMS methods in tsunami and storm-induced deposits
Storm- and tsunami-deposits are generated by similar depositional mechanisms making their discrimination hard to establish using
classic sedimentologic methods. A promising approach is to use rock magnetism techniques to search for new physical benchmarks of tsunami deposits and to integrate them into a multi-disciplinary study. To test our
method, we investigate the 1755 Lisbon tsunami deposit from the Boca do
Rio estuary and other Tsunami-induced deposits from Algarve (Portugal)
and Huelva (Spain), as well as storm-like deposits for comparison. Magnetic
methods repose on bulk (magnetic susceptibility, SIRM, Hc) and directional
(AMS, paleomagnetism) magnetic properties
