HEY LARRY! INVESTIGATING INTERRUPTIONS IN FUTURE VERTICAL LIFT PLATFORMS
Using technology to improve human performance is critical to maximizing the benefits of future combat systems. This study explores the effects of interruptions during high and low cognitive load states when completing dynamic tasks. Furthermore, it provides insight into how to integrate artificial intelligence and virtual assistants into future aircraft effectively. This research and the following analysis provided the Holistic Situation Awareness and Decision Making (HSA-DM) program office with meaningful data and recommendations that will enable them to reduce the impact of interruptions while improving the performance of future pilots.
Specifically, this study collected and examined heart rate variability, subjective cognitive load, flight metrics, interruption lag, and task resumption lag while participants piloted an aircraft and performed dynamic tasks in a flight simulator. There were three different modalities used to assist participants with completing interrupted tasks while performing their primary task. The research team determined that the tactile activated artificial intelligence was the most effective at reducing total interruption time while having the smallest effects on flight performance and cognitive load.Major, United States ArmyMajor, United States ArmyCaptain, United States ArmyCaptain, United States ArmyCaptain, United States ArmyApproved for public release. Periodic Travelling Waves in Dimer Granular Chains
We study bifurcations of periodic travelling waves in granular dimer chains
from the anti-continuum limit, when the mass ratio between the light and heavy
beads is zero. We show that every limiting periodic wave is uniquely continued
with respect to the mass ratio parameter and the periodic waves with the
wavelength larger than a certain critical value are spectrally stable.
Numerical computations are developed to study how this solution family is
continued to the limit of equal mass ratio between the beads, where periodic
travelling waves of granular monomer chains exist

Atmosphere-ocean oxygen and productivity dynamics during early animal radiations
The proliferation of large, motile animals 540 to 520 Ma has been linked to both rising and declining O2 levels on Earth. To explore this conundrum, we reconstruct the global extent of seafloor oxygenation at approximately submillion-year resolution based on uranium isotope compositions of 187 marine carbonates samples from China, Siberia, and Morocco, and simulate O2 levels in the atmosphere and surface oceans using a mass balance model constrained by carbon, sulfur, and strontium isotopes in the same sedimentary successions. Our results point to a dynamically viable and highly variable state of atmosphere–ocean oxygenation with 2 massive expansions of seafloor anoxia in the aftermath of a prolonged interval of declining atmospheric pO2 levels. Although animals began diversifying beforehand, there were relatively few new appearances during these dramatic fluctuations in seafloor oxygenation. When O2 levels again rose, it occurred in concert with predicted high rates of photosynthetic production, both of which may have fueled more energy to predators and their armored prey in the evolving marine ecosystem
The reflective learning continuum: reflecting on reflection
The importance of reflection to marketing educators is increasingly recognized. However, there is a lack of empirical research which considers reflection within the context of both the marketing and general business education literature. This paper describes the use of an instrument which can be used to measure four identified levels of a reflection hierarchy: habitual action, understanding, reflection and intensive reflection and two conditions for reflection: instructor to student interaction and student to student interaction. Further we demonstrate the importance of reflective learning in predicting graduates’ perception of program quality. Although the focus was on assessment of MBA level curricula, the findings have great importance to marketing education and educators
Plasma cholesterol levels and brain development in preterm newborns.
BackgroundTo assess whether postnatal plasma cholesterol levels are associated with microstructural and macrostructural regional brain development in preterm newborns.MethodsSixty preterm newborns (born 24-32 weeks gestational age) were assessed using MRI studies soon after birth and again at term-equivalent age. Blood samples were obtained within 7 days of each MRI scan to analyze for plasma cholesterol and lathosterol (a marker of endogenous cholesterol synthesis) levels. Outcomes were assessed at 3 years using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Third Edition.ResultsEarly plasma lathosterol levels were associated with increased axial and radial diffusivities and increased volume of the subcortical white matter. Early plasma cholesterol levels were associated with increased volume of the cerebellum. Early plasma lathosterol levels were associated with a 2-point decrease in motor scores at 3 years.ConclusionsHigher early endogenous cholesterol synthesis is associated with worse microstructural measures and larger volumes in the subcortical white matter that may signify regional edema and worse motor outcomes. Higher early cholesterol is associated with improved cerebellar volumes. Further work is needed to better understand how the balance of cholesterol supply and endogenous synthesis impacts preterm brain development, especially if these may be modifiable factors to improve outcomes
Inference on inspiral signals using LISA MLDC data
In this paper we describe a Bayesian inference framework for analysis of data
obtained by LISA. We set up a model for binary inspiral signals as defined for
the Mock LISA Data Challenge 1.2 (MLDC), and implemented a Markov chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to facilitate exploration and integration of the
posterior distribution over the 9-dimensional parameter space. Here we present
intermediate results showing how, using this method, information about the 9

Fabrication of Microstripline Wiring for Large Format Transition Edge Sensor Arrays
We have developed a process to integrate microstripline wiring with transition edge sensors (TES). The process includes additional layers for metal-etch stop and dielectric adhesion to enable recovery of parameters achieved in non-microstrip pixel designs. We report on device parameters in close-packed TES arrays achieved with the microstrip process including R(sub n), G, and T(sub c) uniformity. Further, we investigate limits of this method of producing high-density, microstrip wiring including critical current to determine the ultimate scalability of TES arrays with two layers of wiring
How special are Brightest Group and Cluster Galaxies?
We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to construct a sample of 625 brightest
group and cluster galaxies (BCGs) together with control samples of non-BCGs
matched in stellar mass, redshift, and color. We investigate how the systematic
properties of BCGs depend on stellar mass and on their privileged location near
the cluster center. The groups and clusters that we study are drawn from the C4
catalogue of Miller et al. (2005) but we have developed improved algorithms for
identifying the BCG and for measuring the cluster velocity dispersion. Since
the SDSS photometric pipeline tends to underestimate the luminosities of large
galaxies in dense environments, we have developed a correction for this effect
which can be readily applied to the published catalog data. We find that BCGs
are larger and have higher velocity dispersions than non-BCGs of the same
stellar mass, which implies that BCGs contain a larger fraction of dark matter.
In contrast to non-BCGs, the dynamical mass-to-light ratio of BCGs does not
vary as a function of galaxy luminosity. Hence BCGs lie on a different
fundamental plane than ordinary elliptical galaxies. BCGs also follow a steeper
Faber-Jackson relation than non-BCGs, as suggested by models in which BCGs
assemble via dissipationless mergers along preferentially radial orbits. We
find tentative evidence that this steepening is stronger in more massive
clusters. BCGs have similar mean stellar ages and metallicities to non-BCGs of
the same mass, but they have somewhat higher alpha/Fe ratios, indicating that
star formation may have occurred over a shorter timescale in the BCGs. Finally,
we find that BCGs are more likely to host radio-loud active galactic nuclei
than other galaxies of the same mass, but are less likely to host an optical
AGN. The differences we find are more pronounced for the less massive BCGs.Comment: Replaced with slightly modified version accepted by MNRAS. 28 pages,

Investigation into current industrial practices relating to product lifecycle management in a multi-national manufacturing company
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems have gained growing acceptance for managing all information relating to products throughout their full lifecycle, from idea conceptualisation through operations to servicing and disposal. This paper, through an in-depth exploratory study into a leading power generation manufacturing organisation, presents current PLM issues experienced by manufacturing companies, exploring three separate topics: 1) PLM, 2) Knowledge Management and Lessons Learnt and 3) Product Servicing and Maintenance. Following a review of published literature, results of the investigation are presented, analysing the responses of 17 employees interviewed. With respect to Product Development, it was found that information traceability is time consuming and change management requests take too long to complete. Results relating to knowledge management indicate that the Company operates a ‘who you know’ culture, but do aim to capture lessons learned on the manufacturing shop floor and assembly lines. Therefore, a prototype design is proposed to integrate the capturing of lessons learnt within the existing PLM system
