    Observed Effects of a Changing Step-Edge Density on Thin-Film Growth Dynamics

    We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 [001] by pulsed laser deposition, while observing x-ray diffraction at the (0 0 .5) position. The drop dI in the x-ray intensity following a laser pulse contains information about plume-surface interactions. Kinematic theory predicts dI/I = -4sigma(1-sigma), so that dI/I depends only on the amount of deposited material sigma. In contrast, we observed experimentally that |dI/I| < 4sigma(1-sigma), and that dI/I depends on the phase of x-ray growth oscillations. The combined results suggest a fast smoothing mechanism that depends on surface step-edge density.Comment: 4 figure

    Scavenging birds of Kampala: 1973–2009

    Scavenging birds are very conspicuous in Kampala and a number of counts have been made of their numbers since the 1970s. Between the 1970s and mid- 2000s the breeding population of Marabou Storks Leptoptilos crumeniferus increased from about 100 pairs to nearly a thousand, whilst roost counts of Black Kites Milvus migrans also showed large increases. Numbers of Pied Crows Corvus albus and Hooded Vultures Necrosyrtes monachus, also counted as they came into communal roosts, showed lower rates of increase; from mid to late 2000s however, Hooded Vultures seem to be decreasing. These increases perhaps reflect the four-fold increase in the human population over the same period, considerably adding to the refuse upon which these birds mainly feed. In view of alarming declines of scavengers elsewhere, especially vultures, we plan to continue monitoring these Kampala bird

    Birds of isolated small forests in Uganda

    This study concerns birds recorded from four small forests in Uganda, three of them being naturally isolated and the fourth being a fragment of the once extensive forests of southern Uganda. Whilst the forest interior birds in the natural forest islands might be considered subsets of those found in larger forests, the fact that the species composition in the three naturally isolated patches are almost completely different from each other, and in one case appear to have changed with time, suggests a major element of chance in which species occur where. There is also a strong indication of species turnover amongst the forest interior birds in these forests. The fact that, together and over time these small forests supported 37 forest interior species, suggests that, collectively, small forests (of which there are many in Uganda) do have conservation value. The evidence of species turnover with time, if confirmed, would increase the numbers of species involved and implies that even interior species do sometimes travel significant distances across other habitats

    Breeding male grey seals exhibit similar activity budgets across varying exposures to human activity

    Human-wildlife interactions can be incidental or direct through activities such as wildlife tourism. In the presence of anthropogenic activities, some animals exhibit behavioural alterations such as increased vigilance or spatial displacement. Thus, chronic exposure could be adverse to individual fitness through loss of energy or time. Pinnipeds are exposed to human activities in the aquatic environment and on land, but the degree of exposure varies across a species' geographic distribution. For example, breeding colonies of grey seals Halichoerus grypus along the mainland coast of England are exposed to anthropogenic disturbance in the forms of tourism and military activities; however, many offshore colonies are relatively undisturbed. Due to the recent expansion of mainland colonies, the impacts of human presence during the breeding season are of urgent interest for managers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test for any behavioural adjustments associated with anthropogenic presence by comparing the activity budgets of individual male grey seals at a mainland colony with activity budgets from 2 isolated colonies. We found no evidence of differences in the male activity budgets for time spent in non-active behaviours across colonies, and of the 3 colonies, males on the mainland spent the least amount of time alert. This indicates that as capital breeders, selection for conservation of energy is potentially overriding short-term costs of local stressors or that males at the mainland colony have habituated to human presence. Our results demonstrate the importance of understanding species-and life history-stage-specific selection pressures when considering management actions.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Reciprocal relationships in collective flights of homing pigeons

    Collective motion of bird flocks can be explained via the hypothesis of many wrongs, and/or, a structured leadership mechanism. In pigeons, previous studies have shown that there is a well-defined hierarchical structure and certain specific individuals occupy more dominant positions --- suggesting that leadership by the few individuals drives the behavior of the collective. Conversely, by analyzing the same data-sets, we uncover a more egalitarian mechanism. We show that both reciprocal relationships and a stratified hierarchical leadership are important and necessary in the collective movements of pigeon flocks. Rather than birds adopting either exclusive averaging or leadership strategies, our experimental results show that it is an integrated combination of both compromise and leadership which drives the group's movement decisions.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Assessing the utility and limitations of accelerometers and machine learning approaches in classifying behaviour during lactation in a phocid seal

    Background Classifying behaviour with animal-borne accelerometers is quickly becoming a popular tool for remotely observing behavioural states in a variety of species. Most accelerometry work in pinnipeds has focused on classifying behaviour at sea often quantifying behavioural trade-offs associated with foraging and diving in income breeders. Very little work to date has been done to resolve behaviour during the critical period of lactation in a capital breeder. Capital breeding phocids possess finite reserves that they must allocate appropriately to maintain themselves and their new offspring during their brief nursing period. Within this short time, fine-scale behavioural trade-offs can have significant fitness consequences for mother and offspring and must be carefully managed. Here, we present a case study in extracting and classifying lactation behaviours in a wild, breeding pinniped, the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). Results Using random forest models, we were able to resolve 4 behavioural states that constitute the majority of a female grey seals’ activity budget during lactation. Resting, alert, nursing, and a form of pup interaction were extracted and classified reliably. For the first time, we quantified the potential confounding variance associated with individual differences in a wild context as well as differences due to sampling location in a largely inactive model species. Conclusions At this stage, the majority of a female grey seal’s activity budget was classified well using accelerometers, but some rare and context-dependent behaviours were not well captured. While we did find significant variation between individuals in behavioural mechanics, individuals did not differ significantly within themselves; inter-individual variability should be an important consideration in future efforts. These methods can be extended to other efforts to study grey seals and other pinnipeds who exhibit a capital breeding system.     Focused ion beam assisted analysis of the oxidation of a NiAl coating on pure Ni

    peer-reviewedDiscs of (pure nickel 15 mm diameter and 4 nun thickness) have been polished to a 1 mu m finish, aluminised using a standard pack CVD process to give a beta-NiAl coating and then the surface of this coating polished to a 1 mu m finish again. Samples have then been isothermally oxidised in a muffle furnace for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 hours at 950 degrees C, and subjected to surface and cross-sectional microscopy and analysis. Scales were also cross-sectioned and imaged using Focused Ion Beam Milling. The oxidation rate was determined to be 2.6 x 10(-13) g(2) cm(-4) s(-1) and for times less than 512 hours the predominant alumina phase was theta alumina. Al depletion effects were observed due to both oxidation and interdiffusion between the Ni substrate and the NiAl coating. Using these effects, it has been shown that tensile strains of up to 9% can arise and these strains readily explain the formation of intrefacial elliptical pores observed by FIB cross sectioning. FIB sectioning also indicated that different coating grains exhibit different oxide-coating interfaces which arise due to different grain orientations. The faceting of the coating-oxide interface and the development of cuboidal faceted coating structures beneath spalled oxide is thought to be due to substructure development (sub-grain development or recrystallisation) arising from the plastic strains generated by Al depletion effects.Acceptedpeer-reviewe

    Restoring movement fluency is a key focus for physical rehabilitation; it's measurement, however, lacks objectivity. The purpose of this study was to find whether measurable movement fluency variables differed between groups of adults with different movement abilities whilst performing the sit-to-walk (STW) movement. The movement fluency variables were: (1) hesitation during movement (reduction in forward velocity of the centre of mass; CoM), (2) coordination (percentage of temporal overlap of joint rotations) and (3) smoothness (number of inflections in the CoM jerk signal)

    Is the Hamerkop Scopus umbretta a neocolonist or an opportunist nester?

    We report two cases of large aggregations of Hamerkop Scopus umbretta nests in relatively small areas; the first had a maximum of 639 nests in 2004, all within an area of about 8 km2 near to Entebbe, Uganda. However, in recent years there were far fewer nests, with less than a hundred in 2012. The reasons for this decline are unclear. The second site, in Queen Elizabeth National Park, had 56 nests in 2004. There are very few previous records of such gregarious behaviour in this species. Even though a pair may build more than one nest, it implies the presence of a large concentration of birds, which must therefore require rich food sources
